Aug 15, 2019 - Solitaire

Up early to make the Sossusvlei dunes for sunrise, however the national park didn't open it's gates until 7.45am (well after sunrise). First stop was at "Dune 45", one of the largest sand dunes, which can be climbed - I only made it part way. Then onto Deadvlei, a claypan with dead trees that have not decomposed due to the climate (the trees are a couple of thousand years old)). This claypan is overlooked by "Big Daddy", one of the largest dunes in the world at approx 350m. Final stop of the day was at Sesriem Gorge. The people of the area...

Nov 18, 2012 - Sossusvlei

Mar 9, 2012 - Camping Safari Day 8

KAPOORS ON THE ROAD We were up early and on the road quite quickly because we had stayed in a hotel for the previous two nights and didn’t have to take down tents and pack everything into the camping van before setting off. Tonya was staying behind in Swakopmund in order to have another of the series of rabies shots required after being seriously bitten on the leg by a Cape Coast seal. That left just Carmen, Chris...

May 5, 2010 - route dag 8 Sesriem - Solitaire

Sesriem - Solitaire (time 1 hour, distance 100 km) The sunrise is supposed to be spectacular in the dunes of the Sossusvlei, so we will be getting up very early. The entrance gate will open at sunrise, we'll need to be there when it opens. From the gate it will still be a 40 km drive to the heart of the Sossusvlei, the Deadvlei. Enormous sand dunes rise on both sides of the road, where some of them are more than a 100 meters high and it is possible to climb the famous Dune 45. The Deadvlei is in the middle of the dunes and is a white clay...
