Jul 10, 2019 - My Trip to Mexico and Panama

I just got back from a great month traveling throughout Mexico and Central America. I met up with some good friends from high school and absolutely loved every second of our trip. I speak Spanish and look Hispanic, so that should be taken into account when you consider my experiences but I just wanted to pass on some tips in case you guys find yourselves in a rut! 1. Yucatan, Mexico Our first stop in the Yucatan was Cancun. We stayed a few nights in Cancun but I don't recommend doing that at all. Unless you're staying in some fancy resort,...

Feb 28, 2019 - Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel, a mostly undeveloped Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea, is a popular cruise ship port of call famed for its scuba diving. At Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, there's diving spots around a section of the Mesoamerican Reef and the Museo Subacuático de Arte’s submerged sculptures. Chankanaab is an eco park surrounding a lagoon with underwater caverns, home to dolphins, manatees and sea turtles. Did you know: The Cozumel raccoon (Procyon pygmaeus), also called the pygmy raccoon, is a critically endangered species of island raccoon...

Jan 26, 2019 - Sea day

1/26/19 Last day and sea day.  It was 78 this am with winds at 78 kph.  Later on it dropped to 65, but we did get some sun so were able to enjoy our balcony.   I went to the gym one last time this morning. After some walking and reading, we played some bean bag toss, and again, lost in the first round.  Lunch was the chocolate extravaganza again. This afternoon was the free cocktail party for platinum and diamond guests. I just love the Mocha Chocolate Getaway!  Prime rib, mango cream soup and Baked Alaska for dinner with a special goodbye...

Jan 25, 2019 - Cozumel. Mexico

1/25/19 Cozumel, this is our last port before disembarking in New Orleans.  It's amazing how fast it goes, despite being on the ship for 2 weeks. When we arrived around 10 am, there were already 6 ships on port.  I'm not sure I've ever seen that before. There were 2 other Carnival ships, the Magic and the Vista. Royal Carribean Oasis of the Seas, and another ship were docked.  A little ways away, there were 2 huge cruise ships - not sure if anchored or docked. We pulled in right between the 2 Carnival ships. Needless to say, the shops and...

Oct 28, 2018 - Cozumel and Tulum Ruins Mexico

Now, don’t y’all get all huffy on me when I describe a place we didn’t spend much time in, but I’m just trying to ‘splain for your edification. Our ship stopped at Cozumel, an island and municipality in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen, and close to the Yucatán Channel. The municipality is part of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The economy for Cozumel, like other stops on this cruise, is based on tourism. There are a number of visitors to the island's balnearios (seaside...

Sep 3, 2018 - Rainy Day in Cancun

We woke up to rain today which finally lowered the temperature. We ate lunch back at the food stalls at Parque de Las Palapas and took shelter from the storm at the indoor-outdoor bar where we found $1 margaritas last night. For dinner we tried Pericos but there were no other customers to share the saddle bar stools so we had one margarita and moved on. We tried La Parilla complete with a mariachi band but LindaRose was looking for BBQ ribs we thought we'd seen on their website. Not on the menu. Finally we settled on Labnah, a charming...

Sep 2, 2018 - Isla Mujeres and Cancun

We said adios to the 3 cats at Lisa's condo in Playa del Carmen this morning. Lisa will return from Colombia tonight and they will be reunited. LindaRose and I are spending our last two nights in Cancun. The ADO bus ride took an hour and as we were walking to Hotel Plaza Caribe, LindaRose was pickpocketed. We spent an hour reporting the theft to her credit card companies and then went in search of something to eat. Cancun can be pretty dead on a Sunday. We opted to take the ferry to Isla Mujeres. We stopped at my old haunts Rolandi's, JAX,...

Aug 31, 2018 - Last Night in Playa del Carmen

We treated ourselves to an Italian dinner at Negromaro on 5th Avenue and later explored 38th Street. Unlike the usual t-shirt shops and cafes, this street has upscale restaurants and shops. We happened upon one featuring Ladies' Night and free gin and tonics at 8:30. The surprise was that Bombay Sapphire Gin was being poured.

Aug 30, 2018 - Hammocks

We located La Casa de Las Hamacas today and bought two hammocks. Choosing a color was the hardest part. Yucatan hammocks are known for their strength and bright colors. These are the real deal, not the ones sold to tourists at inflated prices. Descendants of Mayans who live in the Yucaatan sleep in hammocks with no beds to be found in their homes. From Everything Playa del Carmen: Hammocks are the essence of life between two palm trees swaying the in the breeze with a cool drink but they are also part of life in the Yucatan for those who...

Aug 28, 2018 - Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is located halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. This fishing village has resisted resort development and has zoning in place to restrict building height. It is a pleasant small town with just the right number of shops, restaurants, bars, and sightseeing offerings. We arrived before noon and stopped for Eggs Benedict. After we walked around the plaza we signed up at Marina Pelicanos for a glass-bottom boat tour which included snorkeling on the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world....

Aug 26, 2018 - Eggs Benedict "Birthday"

We seaarched online for a restaurant that served Eggs Benedict, LindaRose's favorite brunch item. We weren't disappointed at La Vagabunda. I told the waiters it was LindaRose's birthday, an untruth for sure, but she was served complimentary flan for dessert. She rated her eggs a 7.5 out of 10. The restaurant has been in business since 1996, some kind of record in Playa del Carmen. La Vagabunda 5ta Av entre Calle 24 y 26 www.vagabundaplaya.com
