May 2, 2019 - Returning to Malta

Another lovely sunny day as we left Gozo via ferry to return to Malta and the hotel we had previously stayed in. Since it was too early to check in, we dropped our luggage in the hotel storage and decided on a hop-on, hop-off bus tour that went around the northern part of the island that took about 4 hours if you stayed on the whole time. We got off at the medieval walled city of Mdina since it was one of our favorite places and also had a place where we re-visited the home-made cakes and a fresh strawberry meringue! It was nice to see how...

Apr 25, 2019 - London to Malta

After meeting the rest of the group at our airport hotel, we had a 3 hour flight from London to the airport on Malta where we were meant by a tour representative and transported to our hotel in Sliema on the seafront. We literally could walk across the street and be on the waterfront walk which went for miles. We did have a little trouble at the hotel as our paperwork said one thing and the driver insisted that we were at another hotel and neither had reservations for us!! It was sorted out and we met up with Joan (our English friend) so...

Mar 3, 2019 - Marsaxlokk, Malta; Sunday Fish Market

Today I started out to find a flea market but ended up going to the Fish Market in Marsaxlokk, located on the far eastern side of Malta and known for its blue painted fishing fleet. It is similar to the street markets in Italy and other countries I have visited. Lots of everything; clothes, kitchen utensils, candy, vegetables, and here, a lot of fresh fish. After browsing and picking out some local spices I had a late ‘English’ breakfast (including the pork and beans) then wandered into the town toward an interesting looking Cathedral. In...

Mar 2, 2019 - Valletta, Malta

Spent most of the day in Valetta starting with an early ferry ride from the nice harbor side of Sliema to the very nondescript port on the Valletta side. But after a fairly long walk uphill I was able to be very impressed with the fortifications and other buildings clearly from the 1500’s. Not just a lot of ancient buildings, but every structure. I wonderful place for history afficiandos. I had booked in advance through AirB&B a walking food tour from 9:45 to 1pm. Really recommend it as it included not just info about the food and drinks...

Mar 1, 2019 - Sliema, Malta: Sightseeing

Whoops, I almost missed breakfast on the 8th floor of my hotel this morning. I went to bed at 10:30 pm and didn’t wake until 9:00 am. Breakfast was until 9:30 am. A good European breakfast (baked beans available) and an outstanding top floor view. After more resting (catching up from jet lag, my overnight flight from New York) I started out to explore the area. Pictures tell more than words, but there are many Roman ruines. I just wish they had more tourist information along the beautiful ocean promenade. I noticed when flying over Malta...

Mar 1, 2019 - Sliema, Malta

I just arrived yesterday afternoon to Sliema, Malta a city across the Harbour from Vallette, the capitol of Malta. I am staying at the Sliema Marina Hotel where I have a great view from my room of the Harbour and Valette and the fortress where the Knights of Malta reigned for over 300 years. My home in St. Croix has Knight’s of Malta ruins where they once established a short lived colony in the 1650-57 and built fortifications and a monastery. I will be here for a month minus 4 nights in Budapest mid month. There is a local airline WIZZ...

Sep 15, 2018 - Mostar and Mdina

Today we headed into central Malta stoping first at Mosta to view its church with an amazing dome. The whole church was completed, much of the labour voluntary, in just twenty seven years. The church has a high dome, many internal walls of blue and just some gilding, but we were told the story of a bomb in WWII. Three hundred people, were in the church when a bomb hit the dome, piercing it, bouncing off a wall and ending on the floor unexploded. The first thought was that it must have been an Italian bomb or else one that the Jewish people,...

Sep 14, 2018 - Valletta

Our day started with an audiovisual - The Malta Experience - in a theatre situated in the St Elmo Fort. Valletta is sited on a peninsula under a kilometre in length and arranged in a grid pattern with narrow streets to keep the buildings shaded but always accessible for the cooler breeze off the sea. The A-V gave an excellent overview of the history bringing together our experiences yesterday, today when we concentrate on the Knights of St John and tomorrow when we visit Mdina in the centre of the island. Valletta is preparing for a festa...

Sep 13, 2018 - History BC and Modern Era

There are two Maltas for tourists. Where we are staying you would assume it is about sun, drinking, clubbing especially for the young. The other Malta is the story of an ancient history and today we started to explore that. Starting at the Hypogeum, Greek for underground, we saw an audiovisual display relating to the excavation of an area of buildings from earlier than 5000 BC. Included was a look through glass at a small excavated area but only very limited numbers can visit the whole site as it was realised that damage was occurring. For...

Sep 12, 2018 - Sliema

Has been a rather lazy day before the full schedule ahead in the next few days. I'd not closed the curtains so woke to a red sunrise over the harbour and after a god breakfast walked to the far end of the Sliema side and back exploring a little of the side streets and cross alleys. Very warm so a sit in a little shaded square with a bottle of water and a gelati for a spot of people watching was in order. The path alongside the sea was fringed by tour boats and young people encouraging boat tours while the other side of the road is lined...

Sep 11, 2018 - Stockholm to Malta via Frankfurt

Timed out before I had the chance to save so will redo tomorrow. Off to bed now.. Morning now. Had a good sleep so can now make the entry for yesterday. Rather than staying at the airport Lars had arranged for Klara to drive me to the airport as she had Laila and Per's car so she saw early morning at the beginning of her day as a change! No problem with my flights except for a gate change in Frankfurt which had me moving swiftly from Gate 1 to Gate 22.. Arrived in Malta to slightly overcast but warm and humid weather. Taxi at the airport...

Mar 10, 2018 - Final Travels

At breakfast we discuss what we want to do for our last full day, and decided that we have not properly seen what the town we are staying in had to offer. We found there was a garden, Independence Garden, at the border of Sliema and the neighbouring resort St Julian’s Bay so we set off after breakfast. Found this with ease but it was rather run down in our view, even though it had good Tripadvisor ratings. What it did give was some light relief from the busy coastal road. After leaving the gardens we walked the promenade to have a look at...
