Mar 3, 2019 - Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

We are starting to feel a little more independent, but only after another bus trip through the main city. Our guides have been wonderful but shy on talking about some of the history and politics of the region. Kota Kinabalu or KK as the local call it is another mostly Muslim community, with only about 20% Christians and a small number of buddists. The main attractions again included massive modern government buildings that are barely used and house mostly administrative clerks, (since the ruling hierarchy to hold all the high government...

Mar 2, 2018 - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia - Monkeys & Elephants

Back to the vibrancy of Borneo wildlife and cultures. Borneo is the world’s third largest island. It is split up amongst 3 different countries. Indonesia claims the largest piece, Brunei has a small slice and about 25% belongs to Malaysia. Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah, one of the states forming Malaysia. Formerly named Jesselton, it was heavily damaged in WWII. Kota Kinabulu (aka KK) is where Brunei and others come to vacation. Its got it all: beaches, mountains, jungle, wildlife (in the wild and in the city) and many different...

Jan 10, 2018 - Malaysia - Southeast Asia Cruise

We were then transported to the ship. Processing on to the ship was extremely fast and efficient compared to other cruises we’ve been on. From start to finish it took less than 30 minutes to get to our cabin. We just dropped our carry-on bags into the cabin and headed to the lunch buffet. Since it was pushing past 2PM and we were scheduled for dinner at 5:30PM we ate fairly light. Very soon after we returned to our cabin, the “Emergency Evacuation Drill” was performed, a mandatory drill for all passengers to learn where they are supposed to...

Dec 21, 2017 - At Sea

After a fine few days in Singapore we actually had a little bit of light rain after we boarded our ship and then during the sail away party. Never mind, we just sat in Crooners bar and, while looking out the windows, had a couple of beers in celebration of the beginning of our cruise. Our mini suite is excellent, although (warning, first world problem here) the TV in our lounge area wasn't working to begin with and has caused problems each day. Oh well, when that TV fails we just have to lay in bed and watch the other TV there ;-) After we...

Mar 26, 2017 - The complete chill....

Returning back to the hotel in Kota Kinabalu we had a pretty chore based afternoon – laundry….birthday gift for Hannah….and a coffee from the amazing coffee place we had found before we left on the tour. Sarah and I then headed back to the hotel as we were hosting ‘pre dinner’ drink in our hotel room. Sarah had bought a bottle of bubbles from duty free with her and, as it was Hannah’s birthday the next day, it felt like a very appropriate time to drink them! The team arrived at about 6.30 / 45pm, we enjoyed some bubbles, rum cocktails...

Mar 13, 2017 - Home - Borneo style!

The next few journal entries are likely to be slightly shorter as I’m trying to write one for each location I’m going to and given we’re on a tour and going to be moving quite a lot over the next week or so I’ll have a few places to write about! After sorting our bags at the hotel to allow us to leave a few bits we didn’t need for the trip behind and packing the rest, we grabbed a quick breakfast in the morning with Hannah and the met the rest of the group ready to go at about 8.45am. Today we were heading to a village of the local Dunsun...

Mar 12, 2017 - The beginning of Borneo

Friday morning I was up and out after, a goodbye to Amanda, at 7am - heading to the airport. The taxi driver looked like he’d been awake all night and just wanted to go to sleep! Not hugely reassuring as I’d received a message overnight from my friend Anna who is travelling in South America saying she had been in a car accident the day before (she’s ok fortunately). The day was pretty uneventful as I spent pretty much all of it in airports or on planes. Arriving at Don Muang airport (and after a long check in line) I was straight through...

Hundy Tour 2016-2017

Oct 2, 2016 - Epic travelling...

Well, we've arrived and checked into our hotel, and very posh it is too: the Sabah Oriental hotel we'll be staying here again after summiting mount Kinabalu. Has been a long time travelling with a 13hour flight from the UK to Kuala Lumpur and then a 2 hour flight here to Kota Kinabalu. Due to overcrowding in the skies above Europe we were delayed by an hour meaning we missed the connection in Kuala Lumpur. Thankfully we were put on a later flight leaving us 3 hours to kill in the airport - time doesn't fly when you're waiting in the airport...

Dave in Borneo 2016

Jul 14, 2016 - Day 3

Dear Parents, The children slept soundly and it was gone seven when they got up. After breakfast we packed up the camp and then played some team building games until the boat came to take us to Manukan. When we arrived we had a tour of the island to assess the facilities. Later a lunch of finger food was provided by the restaurant. Next we got the boat to STAR and checked into our rooms. The children were very excited to be sleeping in a bed again and some of them had been asking from the moment we woke up when we would be arriving at...

Jul 13, 2016 - Day 2

Dear Parents, In the words of the children, today was awesome, fantastic, educational and exciting! The day started with swimming and playing in the sand. At 11.00am the boat arrived to take us to MERC. Once there we went straight to the auditorium to watch a film about all the work MERC are doing to help conserve the giant clams and coral reefs. Afterwards the children were taken to the aquarium and then the touch pool. At the touch pool the children got to plant coral which in a couple of weeks will be taken out to the nursery at the...

Jul 12, 2016 - Day 1

Dear Parents, We have had an amazing first day! We arrived at Borneo Reef World around 9.30am. After a quick snack and drink we visited the aquarium. The children loved to see all the different fish and coral and particularly loved the clownfish. We spent the rest of the morning snorkeling which all the children were really good at. After a couple of hours we were all ready for lunch. The lunch consisted of noodles, rice, fish, chicken wings, spring rolls and chips. We ate lots and were soon full. The afternoon was spent snorkeling,...
