Jul 5, 2006 - Cameron Highlands

So, I was traveling on my own again...a weird feeling after having had a travel companion for so long. But...more amazing things to see and do! I arrived in the Cameron Highlands just after midday on Wednesday. The Cameron Highlands is an absolutely beautiful mountainous area filled with tea plantations and jungle. The town is a tiny and quaint and relaxing. I arrived and checked into a guesthouse just before the daily afternoon rain/fog/mist rolled in. I spent the afternoon in a lovely cafe drinking tea and booked a half-day organized tour...

Lisa's Journey

Jul 3, 2006 - Highlanders

We're at the end of our 4 day stay in the Cameron Highlands, and nearly at the end of our all-too-short stay in Malaysia. We've done a few things since our stint in the jungle. The place we're staying at, 'Father's Guest House' has a more extensive history than most hostels. It was built by Catholic missionaries before WW2, and then used as army barracks in WW2. A majority of it was knocked down to build the 'half-pipe' soldiers' rooms which are now bedrooms and dorms, so we're actually staying in old barracks! There are also a multitude of...

Jun 29, 2006 - Kuala Lumpur - Cameron Highlands

We said goodbye to Suzy, who had also been extemely helpful and very hospitable. At 8.30am we then got a taxi to Puduraya Bus Station, where we had to go across the road to the office we'd bought our tickets from. They then told us what bay to get the bus from. On enetering the bus station Nina was asked if she wanted a Taxi! This is typical here, as they can see your getting a bus but they still ask anyway! We went to our bay and met another couple, Adam (Aussie) and Jo (English) who were also going to the Cameron Highlands. Our bus was...

May 21, 2006 - To Tanah Rata - the Cameron Highlands

21 May 06 - To Tanah Rata Got up really early as decided to catch the 0815 ferry in order to get good connections for the journey to Tanah Rata,in the Cameron Highlands. I went here on my last trip, and really enjoyed it so fancied returning. Took a taxi to the ferry, and got a bus leaving Lemut for Ipoh at 0930. I knew there was a bus leaving from Ipoh for Tanah Rata at 1115, so was hoping to get there in time to connect with that. We arrived at Ipoh at 1108, got a ticket and the bus left at 1145 with a decidedly unfriendly bus driver who...

May 11, 2006 - Cameron Highland, Malaysia - Cool, Wet and Wonderful!

Cameron Highlands - Cool, Wet and Wonderful Stepping out of our jam packed mini-van at Father's Guesthouse, the near freezing air hit us like a fresh winter breeze on a ski slope in the Rockies - cold, but pleasantly refreshing. Okay, freezing may be a bit of an exaggeration, as it was probably about 17 degrees, but compared to the stifling heat of Cambodia, this felt cold and we loved it. Back at home when we planned the trip, we had planned to travel with the heat for the whole year. Now, eight months into the trip and after some...

May 9, 2006 - Cameron Highlands: Cool change

Catch an early morning bus to Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands. The cooler mountain area of Malaysia, north-east of Kuala Lumpur. The mountains are really pretty and the cooler temperatures are a nice change. Our group has grown to include another British girl and two British guys. Come down with a cold, but not bad enough to stop me from enjoying a trip up Mt Binchang in the back of a truck. We stopped at some tea plantations and did a nature trek, taking in the stunning views from the top of the mountain. Well worth the effort! Our...

Skye's Travels

May 5, 2006 - Cameron Highlands

Hi and welcome back! This entry in my online journal is about my short but very interesting stay in Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands. I arrived by "express" bus from Kuala Lumpur, a 4,5 hour journey, with lots of "5 min." stops... In Malaysia 5 min. is the same as: we leave when the driver has been to the "tandas = toilet" and had a smoke. So after about 20 min. we move on.. Finally in Tanah Rata, I checked in at Father's Guesthouse, and treated myself to a single room with a nice bed and private shower / toilet. All in the same room of...

Mar 5, 2006 - Mr and Mrs poo-poo bum

Man, good thing we went to see the Petronas Towers right after we had that Indian food, because all hell broke loose (in a bowel sort of sense - get it? - loose, bowel?) that night. I think we might have gotten caught up in the fact that it felt like we were back in the western world, and that things would be OK. I think we got a little lazy. Even though the food was delicious, we were both feeling like we weren't digesting around midnight that night after returning from the Petronas. By 4 in the morning, I was using the garbage can in the...

Jan 10, 2006 - Anyone for a Pot of Tea?

From the heat and humidity of the jungle to the cool, crisp air of the highlands... thank heavens. We made the 5 & 1/2 hour journey to the Cameron Highlands without a hitch, other than spots of fog and rain. Here in the highlands the temperature has been hanging around the mid 50's I would say, but who really knows since it is all in Celsius anyway. I, of course, was pumped to dig out the fleece and wool socks... I never thought I would be so happy to be able to see my own breath again. The weather, although cool, has been consistently damp...
