Apr 22, 2015 - Stairway to Heaven

Wow and wow again, a brutal day of climbing in not ideal climatic conditions. The grade of climbing today was described in guide books as: Demanding. One of the passes I hiked through was named: Dogiri-zaka meaning 'Body breaking slope' and to top it off, the famous Japanese poet named Fujiwara Teike mentioned in his diary in 1201 after completing the pilgrimage 'This route is very rough and difficult, it is impossible to describe precisely how tough it is'. Need I say more? But of course I will .... It was goddamn tuff and I suffered....

Apr 15, 2005 - Born From An Egg On A Mountain Top

After the thoroughly exhausting day I had in Kyoto on Thursday, I must say that I was certainly looking forward to my visit to the reportedly peaceful Mount Koya. In fact, I had been looking forward to this day, and night, for almost a month now, since I had make the booking for my overnight stay in a real, working Shingon Buddhist temple. Thanks to the good folks at japaneseguesthouses.com (highly recommended), I had managed to secure a room for a night at the ritzy-looking (for a temple) Shojoshin-in - something I may never have been able...
