9/24 Gain yet another hour, our last, and the check in with Japanese immigration which as you might suspect was totally organized and went very fast/smoothly. Going on the Best of Otaru excursion beginning at noon. At first I was a bit disappointed when our guide announced we'd spend 1 & 1/2 hours SHOPPING!  Our first stop was the photo shoot tourist spot by the canal which was the iconic transport sysrem in early Otaru but became unsupportable when business dropped off and could not be repaired economically.  Only the small section remains...

Jun 7, 2014 - Yosakoi Soran festival

We docked in Otaru, another small fishing port. As the crew tied us up, a flea market came to life on shore. Tents, tables, and a sound stage took root before our eyes and crowds of locals gathered to shop, eat, and enjoy. We examined the items for sale through our binoculars and could see there wasn’t much for sale for the likes of us. This was a local soiree. May 29, 2012 - Otaru Outing

Today I met with an English speaking guide and visited the town of Otaru. It took about 45 minutes by a scenic train ride along the coast. Photos of Otaru make it look like a charming old port town. It's current popularity with tourists is due to a savvy choice to remarket itself. As I understand it the town fell on hard times after a decrease in fishing revenue and coal production. The powers that be realized they had a nice canal and some old buildings they could show off to tourists but felt they needed more of a speciality. Apparently...
