Apr 15, 2016 - Shinjuku to Narita City

Fri 15th 17-20°C, clear, sunny, windy. Last night at around 9:35 pm I turned on the news. There was a magnitude 6.4 quake in Kumamoto prefecture at 9:26 pm, the temblor was Japanese intensity 7, the highest on the scale. The most destruction occured at the town of Mashiki, 15km east of Kumamoto City. Although some would say that the toll was low compared to past world events, we were saddened by this news as Mel once knew someone who lives near Mishiki, and we both know Kumamoto well. On a lighter note, Mel and I went to Shibuya for lunch...

Mar 26, 2016 - Narita airport

Narita Sat 26th 7°C, cloudy. QF61 from Brisbane was good, the refurbished A330-303 has good seats and personal entertainment. Watched a couple of recent release movies, for the last 1/2 hr I played battleships against Mel (she won >_<). Tedious long lines through immigration and then at the travel centre for our rail passes. Cheerful driver of the shuttle bus to Narita Rest House hotel loaded our heavy luggage with a smile, the hotel check-in was quick and friendly. The twin room has enough space to spread out nicely (rare in Japan). The...

Feb 21, 2016 - Sayonara Japan!

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD In the end, we decided to stay in our hotel on our last night in Japan. It was raining heavily and when we looked out the window from our room on the 18th floor, all we could see was huge puddles on the streets below and a sea of colourful umbrellas scurrying from one building to another. There was no way I was going to get my ‘dissolvable’ husband out in that weather. We really wanted to visit the Murakami Exhibition at the Mori Art Museum, but the forecast for Sunday morning showed bright sunshine and warmer...

Jan 31, 2016 - Narita

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here’s some of what the Lonely Planet – Japan chapter Mt. Fuji and Around Tokyo has to say about Narita International Airport: “The home of Japan’s main international airport has plenty of accommodation that is perfect if you have an early morning flight or would prefer to ease yourself into Japan after your arrival. Narita is 66km east of Tokyo, in neighbouring Chiba prefecture. Most international fl??ights op??erate through Narita. There are several shinkansen (bullet train) lines that connect Tokyo with the rest of...

Jan 15, 2016 - LA to Japan

Welcome to the Korean adventure. A couple of months ago, my friend and former student Sang asked me if I would be willing to come to Seoul and speak at a Christian Education conference he is leading. I was honored and accepted. However, my life has been a bit crazy in the ensuing weeks and getting ready to go has been challenging. The truth is, I am only speaking once for about 70 minutes including time for translation. But, they are bringing me all the way from America for those minutes, so I need to be good. I actually closed on a house...

Dec 22, 2013 - Narita and Atsugi

Woke up at 6:30am after a great sleep. The single room at the Narita Mercure has a double bed that is very firm, as most Japanese beds are, and that suits me fine. Pillows are filled with buckwheat husks I think, quite heavy but surprisingly comfortable. Pulled the curtains back and looked westward..Fuji! Bright and clear, it's classic snow capped profile was visible out here! Breakfast buffet is good, enough variety to suit Japanese and Western tastes, as well as those who like both(like me). After breakfast I went for a stroll down...

Dec 21, 2013 - Gold Coast to Narita

Good flight by Jetstar, left Gold Coast at 10:50, arrived Narita at 18:50. I was met by Mel at arrivals, after hugs and catching up with news we left for our hotels, Mel at the Comfort Narita and myself at the Narita Mercure. I walked Mel down to her hotel, at night it's nose-stingingly cold, but Mel says the days have been sunny, clear and a comfortable temp. The Mercure has a free shuttle to/from the airport, and is very conveniently located between the JR and Keisei line stations. A short walk to Omotesando St and then along the street...

Aug 25, 2013 - Fukuoka-Haneda-Narita

The bus from Sasebo arrived at the Fukuoka Airport where we checked in our baggage for the next leg of our journey, Fukuoka to Haneda via an ANA flight. One interesting feature of ANA is that during takeoff and landing, the cabin screens show what Mel calls "runway cam" which shows the runway view from the front of the aircraft-quite cool! After coffee and nibbles we said our goodbyes to Mel at Haneda Airport and then took the "Airport Limousine" bus to Narita Airport for our flight to Sydney and ultimately Melbourne for Rob and Evie,...

Aug 10, 2013 - Narita City

Long flight! Fully inclusive with crying baby all night long. Stuffed but we dropped our bags at the hotel and went walking down Omotosando St to the Naritasan Temple. Gorgeous streetscape, had honey ice cream and sweet soy crackers on a stick. Hot as Hades-no, hotter! Some respite at the gardens. Chilled out at our hotel with beer and wine and nibbles from the Family Mart. Gotta love convenience stores in Japan, so much that we're off to buy some dinner as too inebriated and tired to go out to dine. There is a lot more to see, though we...

Dec 27, 2011 - Last day in Narita

We were due to depart the hotel for the airport by late afternoon, so we had most of the day free. There was still one thing on our agenda that had to be done. Our plan was to take a picture of Jack in his Christmas sweater in front of this hotel called the Hotel Chapel Christmas. This is a hotel that Jeff had seen many times because it was on the bus route into town. It is just across the road from one of the hotel stops along the way. It has huge Santa Claus figures all over the property and is decorated for Christmas all year long...

Dec 25, 2011 - Newark to Narita

Well this is a first. I was randomly selected at the gate to have my shoes checked for bombs. They also rifled through my carry on which I have had happen before, but not the shoe check. I sat and waited for them to do their very thorough investigation before I was allowed to board. There were quite a few people pulled aside for this I found. Jeff is flying this trip and Jack and I got first class. Good, because flight is about 14 hours long. They've changed the first class cabin on the 777 since we flew to China in 2008. You're kind of...

Oct 26, 2011 - Layover in Tokyo

The 14 hour flight from EWR to Tokyo wasn't that bad, and I had 6+ hours to kill in the airport. A coworker had suggested I go visit the town of Narita, but I just didn't have it in me. Last time I was in Tokyo airport, I remembered finding a massage/reflexology place, so I checked in to the lounge and made my way through the airport guide until I found it ("Raffine" in case anyone needs the info). Lucky for me it was only around the corner and down the hall from the lounge, so I booked an hour of reflexology. If you've never tried this, my...
