Apr 29, 2015 - Wheels on the train go round and round, round and round ......

A quiet travelling day yesterday. Trains are so easy, quiet and comfortable. Not much scenery but we had time to sort through photos, paperwork and took a packed lunching the train, so the time went quickly. Arrived at Tokushima mid afternoon and enjoyed a walk through the food area of one of the department stores. We were as amazed at the food presentation and packaging, not to mention the array of unusual food items as we were last time we were in Japan. It all looked delicious, so tempting. I sure wish Lane Cove had a supermarket half as...

Wanderlust 2015

Apr 28, 2015 - Bridge Over Troubled Waters

It was interesting to meet Cameron's cycle club members who he has spent the past week with, heard all the stories of his trip and after a misty sunrise view over the river, an interesting Japanese breakfast (no sautéed goldfish in sight this morning)it was time for us to farewell his team members and for us to depart Onomichi on our island hopping cycle expedition. I was a little worried about my lack of cycle hours recently as well as cycling on an extremely heavy Mamachari (Mama's chariot - a little different to my usual bike) but was...

Wanderlust 2015

Oct 4, 2014 - Nara to Matsuyama

10/4 Up by 6, shower-shave-eat (I'm in a different dorm from B &M) and ready to go by 7:15when we head for the train.Luckily we decided to reserve seat, the longer rides (Shin-Osaka to Okayama & Ookayama to Matsuyama) were full and we sat separately.Lots of tunnels in Japan. ..watching scenery sometimes difficult since long distance trains we were on traveled 200-300 km/hr.(150mph+). Still enjoyed seeing the rapidly changing landscapes.  Also really liked the mix of agriculture and housing. The gentle pulsing of the wheels on the rails put...

Aug 22, 2008 - Loving Japan!

WOW! WOW! WOW! Boy am I loving Japan!!! For those of you that read my last blog, you can stop worrying as I a)found my hotel and b)had a reservation!! This is actually my first time ever in a foreign country (non English speaking) without other people around me (and everything organised for me) so I was actually pretty proud of myself that I got to the hotel under my own steam. I even took the local bus, and found the hotel by walking around the streets for a few minutes! I spent the afternoon walking around the massive mall (essentially...

Living the Dream

Nov 23, 2005 - 53 going on 54

Thursday: Bob was on his way from Temple 53 just after lunch - expecting to get about half way to 54 before stopping for the night - probably at a Shinto Temple. All is well and he was particuarly chuffed to have been invited to stay with a family - o'settai - for Wedensday night. He apparently ate himself to a standstill, enjoyed a 45 minute soak in a nearby onsen and was up until midight chatting... Really enjoyed the SOFT bed - and a good breakfast - although did comment on one reality check. He met the family at Temple 52 - and they...
