Dec 4, 2005 - Crunching through the snow

Wondered what the crunching sound was underfoot at 4am this morning when he got up for a toilet break... Snowfall proper for about 4 hours this morning, leaving a good 5 to 6cm of snow on the ground at Temple 66. Enjoyed feeling the snow fall on his shoulders and the contrast of the white snow on the dark stone statues. Shared coffee and coco corn with another henro for breakfast and headed down the trail. Was minus 1 this morning when Bob got up. Went crunching slipping and sliding down the hill and has completed Bangai 16 and heading...

Dec 3, 2005 - Highest Temple on Shikoku

Bob had his first snow fall last night, presumable at Bangai 13. Will be spending this evening at Temple 66 - Temple of hovering clouds - around 920m... This is about the official two-thirds mark in terms of temple numbers. Temperatures are COLD. Averaging between 6 and minus something. Tonight should have a 'real feel' of -3 and tomorrow evening -7... that's cold. Have reisted calling today - information from short skymail. More tomorrow hopefully

Dec 2, 2005 - Sitting out the rain at Bangai 15

Bob woke to 7 degrees this morning. He made it up to Bangai 15 - despite no trail markers - and resolutely walked 1,5 hours uphill rather than take the cable car... arriving at 11am his time. Apparently there are 100s upon 100s of steps heading up into the mist - evetually leading the a huge temple complex. Was orignally refused permission to camp overnight under a shelter, but 15 minutes later a heavy rain setteled in for the day - and someone took pity on Bob. He is however kicking his heels and feeling rather cold - with nowhere warm and...

Nov 30, 2005 - Temple 65 and onwards

All's well. Bob had done 19km in 5 and 3/4 hours by the time I called, climbing up to Temple 65 - says it was quite a climb, but not as bad as Temple 20!! Now descending the other side heading towards an impressive river and Bangai Temple 13 (does sounds as though he is trying the washed out henro trail...) He's been based near the sea for the last few days and it was a warm 7 degrees this morning. Although stopping for a chat with just his shorts and henro top gets the goose bumps up straight away. Has taken about 1 200 photographs so far...

Nov 29, 2005 - Over night at Bangai 12

44 days down, 22 to go - two thirds of the allotted time down. Bob spent 6 hours on the road and stopped off at Bangai 12 for the night (camping in the courtyard) - although reached it by early afternoon. Walking at a fairly even pace with another walker (playing snakes and ladders in progress) and they have been vying for prime camping positions. Bob said wryly - lesson one of enlightenment - pitch your tent first! So far it sounds as though Bob is the faster learner - or perhaps just the faster walker - or out earlier on the trail. Will...
