Sep 22, 2015 - Leaving shibushi

Bowed farewells from our hotel. Felt like we were leaving family! While we waited for Mark we watched the 'pom pom' tree being pruned. The natural shape has the leaves in bunches; the pruning just formalises and evens them out! Off to Mark and Riins where rubbish was going out. Rubbish here is sorted into something like 27 types by the householder. The general rubbish is collected frequently (daily?) The other less often (monthly) there are collection points for sections of the town; not at every house. Some of the rubbish like...

Apr 27, 2015 - Fukuoka, Japan

Pete had a nice visit in Fukuoka today. Fukuoka is located on the northern shore of the Japanese island of Kyushu. It is known for its beautiful green spaces in a metropolitan setting. The city is bordered on the other three sides (other than the sea side) by mountains. It is a subtropical climate and the temperature right now is in the 70's with humidity in the 90% range.

Oct 6, 2014 - Hiroshima to Fukuoka

10/6 After our 1 &1/2 hour stay in Kagoshima-chou, we jumped on the Shinkansen (bullet) traim back N. to our port destination of Fukuoka where we take the ferry over to Busan, S. Korea. While in Kagoshima-chuo (which we thought would be closer to the ocean but was not), Mari and I took a ride on the ferris wheel perched atop the mall which ajoins the rail station. From it we got a great view to the E. of Shakurashima the still live volcano and surrounding area. Also took a coffee/tea break in of all things a Seattle's Best barista...

Aug 19, 2014 - Fukuoka, Japan

Pete visited Fukuoka, Japan today, rather than Busan, South Korea, which was part of the original itinerary. Things were fine. There was another crew party - this one with an "Alice in Wonderland" theme. Pete served as the DJ for the party, something he has apparently done for other parties but didn't mention. We didn't even know he knew how to be a DJ!

Pete checked in from Fukuoka. He was planning to make a quick trip into the port with Hannah to visit Starbucks and use the wifi. Everything is going well. He has not heard anything yet about his schedule after he finished this contract. There will be some changes in band personnel next week, including Hannah leaving to start a series of cruises from Toronto, Canada to Alaska.

Another change in the ship itinerary took Pete back to Fukuoka, Japan today. He called early in the morning and did not have plans yet but was thinking he would leave ship for awhile to visit Fukuoka, get something to eat, and probably look for wifi, which seem to be his usual activities when he is on land! The high temperature today in Fukuoka is expected to be 77. As of today, Pete has traveled 38,975 miles since he left Indianapolis 14 weeks ago.

May 27, 2014 - Fukuoka, Japan

The weather was nice for a visit to Fukuoka. Pete and some of his friends got off the ship to get something to eat and look around a little bit. They ate noodles, went to a park, and got coffee before heading back to the ship. Two musicians are leaving tomorrow and Pete was worried that he would be the only sax player for awhile but found out today that a new tenor player will be arriving tomorrow, also, so he won't be alone. Things are going just fine. They did not have any performance responsibilities again today.

May 20, 2014 - Fukuoka, Japan

Pete checked in from Fukuoka. He had not yet left the ship but said it looked like the town was pretty far away from the port so he would have to find out about convenient transportation to and from. The weather was rainy with temperatures in the 60's. His evening plans involved playing a big band set for the passengers and then playing for a crew party. He said that the crew parties often draw very big crowds but that there hadn't been much advertising for this particular party so he wasn't expecting a large crowd. Other musical groups...

Aug 25, 2013 - Sasebo-Fukuoka

Checked out of the Sasebo Hotel Chisun Grand after another buffet brekky and ordered 2 taxis to take us to the Sasebo Bus Centre. By the time we walked from the front desk to the doors, the taxis were already there and waiting! I just love Japanese service. Just after we arrived at the bus terminal the heavens opened again, when you talk about the Kyushu rain, you really mean the Kyushu deluge. Boy, does it come down! After obtaining 120 yen cafe lattes from the auto machine that grinds the coffee, filters the brew, adds the milk(and/or...

Aug 18, 2013 - Fukuoka day 2

Up at 8:00am for breakfast which was run in shifts due to a smallish restaurant and fully booked hotel. No going for seconds-load up your tray with the mainly Japanese fare, eat and get out to make room. Rob and Evie went shopping 'til dropping out at Hawks Town, a big complex near the Fukuoka Dome. Seems they emptied the Nike factory outlet of bargains, and the local Hero's cafe of coffee-a very nice brew according to Rob. Mel and I looked at the ACROS building, literally a 'green' office building with a terraced roof on one side that...

Aug 17, 2013 - Fukuoka day 1

We were up at 5am this morning and headed down to shin Osaka where we had breakfast at Alex's favourite coffee shop S*** B***s before boarding the Shinkansen Mizuho 603 superexpress to Fukuoka. The ride was lovely and smooth and relaxing despite travelling at 300kmh and the scenery nice and green considering the heat. On arrival in Fukuoka we spent some time browsing around the shops before checking in to the Tenjin place hotel, Ev and Melynda stayed at the hotel to rest up while Alex and I went sightseeing. We caught a bus to the Fukuoka...
