Dec 21, 2019 - Hakata-Canal City

Sat 21st Dec. Cloudy and cool, 5-12°C. All packed, checked out at 10am. Luggage stored at the hotel while we use up a few hours until our 5pm taxi to Fukuoka airport. Brunch at Pietro on 12th floor of IMS Tenjin. Good Italian, big tables with a view. Went to Canal City by bus, only a km away but saves the legs for ¥100(IC card ok). Browsed some interesting gift stores. There was a small concert by Sard Underground, an all girl band, they were pretty good. Afterwards we watched the excellent water fountain show, then chilled out at Starbucks...

Dec 20, 2019 - Atago Shrine

Fri 20th Dec. Clear, cloudy later, 6-13°C. Rode the original Kyushu shinkansen 'Tsubame' from Hakata to Kurume. These 800 series came into service in 2004 on the first Kyushu shinkansen line from Kagoshima to Yatsushiro, halfway to Hakata. Once the missing link to Hakata opened in 2014, they became the 'all stops' between Hakata and Kagoshima. Not quite as fast at 260kph as the newer N700-8000 trains at 300kph, required for the Sanyo line to Shin-Osaka, but very nice, stylish interior, with lots of wood and bamboo. Took the Kuko line...

Dec 17, 2019 - Tenjin shopping

Tue 17th Dec. Showers all day, 12 - 20°C. Breakfast at Yayoiken, then people watched over a latte on the 2nd floor of Tully's Coffee. Had a poetic moment or two watching the damp breeze strip the Ginkos of a shower of golden leaves, swirling them amongst umbrella toting passers-by. Wandered through the Sega Centre games building, marvelling at the vast array of crane games on the lower floors. Here in 2017 Mel won a hedgehog plushie the size of a bull terrier. I had no idea how we would get that thing home but we managed to squish it into...

Dec 15, 2019 - Mojiko to Kitakyushu

Sun 15th Dec. Partly cloudy, 6 - 14°C. The small but interesting Mojiko Rail Museum has some fine examples of steam, diesel, and electric locos and rolling stock dating from 1911. Entry was quite reasonable at ¥300. There are great attractions for the kids, including kid’s room, model train display, and driving simulators. The Miniature Train Park has a set of rail tracks where for ¥300, visitors can also drive fully-operational mini trains that can seat 3 people. The nearby original Mojiko station forms part of the historic nature of the...

Dec 12, 2019 - Tenjin

Thu 12th Dec. Partly cloudy, cold breeze, 9 - 12°C. We took the Nanakuma subway from Tenjin-minami to Jiromaru Station. Close by is a 'HalloDay' supermarket, where Mel shopped when she lived in the area. Inside is a 'BakerChef' store, one of the few bakeries that produce a delicious rice bread! We chose to eat at the small tables provided, so the baker warmed up our chosen fare in the huge oven before presenting it to us on a tray. After indulging in our delicious bakery breakfast, we returned via subway to Tenjin-minami. We transferred to...

Dec 10, 2019 - Tenjin, Fukuoka-shi

Tue 10th Dec. Mostly clear & sunny, 6 - 17°C. Beautiful day, walked down Tenjin Kokutai-doro (route 202) between Kego and Akasaka intersections to see the autumn zelkova tree tunnel, unfortunately the leaves were mostly gone. Continued to the old Fukuoka Castle ruins via Gokoku shrine. There were some nice views from the top of the castle ruins, but most trees were bare as peak autumn colour was at the end of November. Just a splash of colour left here and there. Walked on to Ohori park, had a chai latte and a scone at a very nice...

Dec 9, 2019 - Kumamoto to Tenjin, Fukuoka

Mon 9th Dec. Clear & cold, 1 - 15°C. Had a nice sleep in after driving all day yesterday. Went for a morning stroll along the river outside our hotel, there's a good pathway for cyclists, joggers, and walkers. Very urban, though pleasant enough with trees and occasional small parks. The Great Kumamoto Tram and Pastry Tour! Checked out at 9:30, at the mall a Pronto cafe was open where we had a small breakfast and shared a pastry. Our hotel is near where the two tram lines split, so we decided to take the 'B' line Kumumoto tram to it's...

Dec 6, 2019 - Fukuoka

Fri 6th Dec. Cloudy, some rain, 6 - 11°C. About 100m from the hotel Grandolce, via a footbridge over the canal, there is a path between Tenjin Central park and the ecologically designed ACROS Fukuoka Symphony hall. A good morning exercise is to climb the staircases through the forest on the sloping side of the building to the top and down again on the opposite side, leaving one's knees quite shaky if you go too quickly. It's like a nice hike through a hillside park full of birdlife, with some splashes of autumn colour at this time of...

Dec 5, 2019 - Fukuoka, Kushida Shrine

Thu 5th Dec. Mostly cloudy, occasional sun, 6 - 11°C. Had a nice sleep-in, not stirring until 8 o'clock. Mel went shopping for friends back home, I went exploring around Hakata. Found the lovely Kushida shrine, affectionately called "Okushi-san" by the locals. Spent some time exploring this historic and interesting complex established in 757ad. Amongst many interesting sights is one of the floats from the previous year's Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival. At 10 metres tall, weighing about one ton, how they can keep it upright as they race...

Apr 10, 2019 - Fukuoka

Once again the day began with multiple train trips. First an express train for two hours, then a local train for another hour. We continue to be amazed by the rail system; fast, timely, ultra clean, smooth and quiet. The stations in most large cities are incredibly busy and crowded with people rushing everywhere, without our guide we'd probably be lost in minutes. After arriving on a local train in Dazaifu we took a taxi to the Kyushu National Museum to view the collections of calligraphy, sculpture and arts from Japan and its Asian...

Jul 18, 2018 - Backtrack to Baseball

Gotta love the Shinkansen (Bullet) Trains - Kyoto to Fukuoka is 650 km, and the ride was ~ 3 hours. No need to remove your shoes, belt, false teeth, declare allegiance to whomever, discard water, etc. etc. ad nauseam. Just get on the clean, comfortable vehicle and enjoy a quiet, smooth ride at ~ 130 mph. So now we're on the island of Kyushu; in the northeast corner, and capital, city of Fukuoka. Thought I lucked out and could see a home game of the Softbank Hawks. The stadium in Fukuoka is the world's largest geodesic dome, and is modeled...

Dec 2, 2017 - Fukuoka to Brisbane

Fukuoka Sat 2nd Dec. 3.8-13°C clear&sunny Brisbane Sun 3rd Dec. 22-28°C 90% chance of rain. Had a quick look around Tenjin, walked through the amazing ACROS building, then took a taxi to Hakata International. Past the check-in counters, before security, there's a great Asahi souvenir store for those small last minute gifts. Mostly made in Japan, and not overly marked up prices. They have some really expensive jewellery as well, I can't vouch for the value of these. Korean air displayed their efficiency by sqeezing in a meal and a drink on...
