Apr 10, 2019 - Fukuoka

Once again the day began with multiple train trips. First an express train for two hours, then a local train for another hour. We continue to be amazed by the rail system; fast, timely, ultra clean, smooth and quiet. The stations in most large cities are incredibly busy and crowded with people rushing everywhere, without our guide we'd probably be lost in minutes. After arriving on a local train in Dazaifu we took a taxi to the Kyushu National Museum to view the collections of calligraphy, sculpture and arts from Japan and its Asian...

Jul 18, 2018 - Backtrack to Baseball

Gotta love the Shinkansen (Bullet) Trains - Kyoto to Fukuoka is 650 km, and the ride was ~ 3 hours. No need to remove your shoes, belt, false teeth, declare allegiance to whomever, discard water, etc. etc. ad nauseam. Just get on the clean, comfortable vehicle and enjoy a quiet, smooth ride at ~ 130 mph. So now we're on the island of Kyushu; in the northeast corner, and capital, city of Fukuoka. Thought I lucked out and could see a home game of the Softbank Hawks. The stadium in Fukuoka is the world's largest geodesic dome, and is modeled...

Dec 2, 2017 - Fukuoka to Brisbane

Fukuoka Sat 2nd Dec. 3.8-13°C clear&sunny Brisbane Sun 3rd Dec. 22-28°C 90% chance of rain. Had a quick look around Tenjin, walked through the amazing ACROS building, then took a taxi to Hakata International. Past the check-in counters, before security, there's a great Asahi souvenir store for those small last minute gifts. Mostly made in Japan, and not overly marked up prices. They have some really expensive jewellery as well, I can't vouch for the value of these. Korean air displayed their efficiency by sqeezing in a meal and a drink on...

Dec 1, 2017 - Ohori Park and Yusentei Garden

Tenjin Fri 1st Dec. 7-10°C, cloudy/sunny Chilly outside, late breakfast in Tenjin Chikagai, then to the Kuko line subway. Trains were delayed five minutes by the missile drills, officials with loudhailers were everywhere to assure people that it was a drill only. Thanks, rocket man. Living with the constant threat of volcanos, earthquakes and tsunamis just isn’t enough to worry about. Travelled two stops to Ohori-koen station, the nearest stop to Ohori Park. A wonderful public space with gardens, a large lake, separate jogging and cycling...

Nov 30, 2017 - Tenjin day off

Tenjin Thurs 30th Nov. 11-17°C, raining. Cold and wet outside, went down into the warm atmosphere of Tenjin Chikagai, a huge, stylish underground complex stretching for 600 metres north to south of downtown Tenjin. It has two long parallel main streets connected by several cross streets, with connections to two subways, Nishitetsu Railway, Tenjin bus station, and all of the surrounding buildings at below ground level. You can navigate a lot of Tenjin without surfacing, great in poor weather. Lots of stylish cafes and shopping. Filter...

Nov 29, 2017 - Hakata shopping

Fukuoka Wed 29th Nov. 14-17°C, rainy/cloudy. Took Mel to Bill’s for breakfast, we both had the ricotta hotcakes. I salivated in anticipation for every step of the 800 metres from our hotel. Mel doesn’t like her photo published online, which is just as well as I don’t think I could fit her smile on the page. Went to Yodobashi Camera in Hakata, the camera section was pretty big, with a lot of brands, but cameras are only a small part of their business, there are floors of other electrical goods, also some apparel sections, and a restaurant...

Nov 28, 2017 - Hakata Port Tower

Fukuoka Tues 28th Nov. 7.9-22°C, clear and sunny. Had a nice day off relaxing, went for a 2k stroll to Hakata Port tower. Some interesting displays inside the ground floor. Free entry to the observation deck, nice views of Fukuoka City and the port area out to the islands. Mesh in the windows makes photography difficult. Bought some sushi from the seafood market, ¥97 per piece, selected from a variety on ice, enough to feed two of us for ¥1,100 or so. Made from seafood caught last night, it was pretty good. Enjoying a latte and apple danish...

Nov 23, 2017 - Gion, Fukuoka. Hotcakes and Temples

Fukuoka Thu 23rd Nov. 9-12°C, cloudy/sunny. Had breakfast at Bill's restaurant, Suijo park, Nishi-Nakatsu. Expensive, but great service, and the hotcakes are so-o good. Took the Subway to Gion, wandered around Shokofu-ji, the first Zen temple in Japan. Constructed in 1195, it is said to be the birthplace of Japanese tea. Present buildings date from 1587. There are many temples in this quiet part of Gion, one subway stop from Hakata Stn. I enjoyed wandering around this historical area. Nearby is Tocho-ji temple, which has a beautiful...

Hakata Tues 21st Nov. 4.4-15°C, clear & sunny. Went by subway to Hakata Stn. Strolled 10min to Sumiyoshi Jinja, said to be the oldest of 2,200 "Sumiyoshi Shrines" in Japan. This shrine has a deep connection to sumo since ancient times, and hosts the Asakayama Stable for the November Japan Grand Sumo Tournament. Peaceful and quiet, with many areas to explore in a natural setting amongst large mature trees. Easy to spend an hour or two here. Hakata Station is a huge shopping complex with restaurants, cafes, etc. There is a viewing area on the...

Fukuoka Mon 28th 6-17°C clear, sunny. Went via subway Kuko line two stops to Ohori Park. Lovely place, large lake, the old Fukuoka castle ruins, sakura blossoming but needs another week for full bloom. Had a latte in the Ohori eco starbucks with a view across the lake. Mel and I had a stroll around Tenjin, she pointed out a few old haunts, like the Shidax karaoke building and the Taito Game Arcade building with several floors of video game machines. Mar 27, 2016 - Fukuoka

Narita-Hakata(Fukuoka) Sun 27th Narita 07:00 7.5°C, cloudy - Hakata 17:00 11°C, sunny. Took the hotel shuttle bus to NRT T2 at 07:40, Mel made the last of our shinkansen seat bookings at the JR East Midori-no-Madoguchi. We have green (1st class) passes, so we're travelling in style. Boarded the Narita Express from NRT terminal 2 to Shinagawa, about an hour long trip. Narita airport is a lo-ong way from Tokyo! At Shinagawa we boarded the Shinkansen Hikari to Shin-Osaka, smooth and fast ride at 285 kph. It is better to change at Shinagawa as...
