An hours drive from Fukuoka through mountains, which involved taking 26 tunnels, one 6 kilometres long, got us to Eboni where Riin and Chris's grandsons Elija and River met us. Riins parents, 3 or 4 aunties an uncle and a cousin all greeted us with many smiles and bows. Engish was limited. Riins uncle has a traditional Japanese hotel (Ryokan) and this is where we were to spend our first night. The area is volcanic with lots of hot water springs. Aug 26, 2008 - In the shadow of Sakurajima

On Monday we set off to Kagoshima at the bottom of Kyushu. The train system here really is pretty efficient with trains turning up and leaving dead on time - you could set your watch by them I think. The stations all have their names in English as well which is obviously very helpful. Part of the train ride was spent on a shinkansen train - this is a bullet train and boy do they go fast (up to 300km an hour).
