Wed 18th December. Fine, cloudy, some rain. 11-17°C Yesterday the forecast was for a cloudy morning to a clear afternoon. Turned into a fine morning and cloudy/rainy evening. Best laid plans of mice and travellers. Rode the 7am Sonic Express from Hakata to Beppu, arriving in plenty of time for the 10:05 Odan Tokkyu. Amazingly, a weak sun is burning through lingering cloud, highlighting pleasant scenery between Kokura and Beppu. Aug 21, 2013 - Aso-San

After another good breakfast we left the Dormy Inn in our rented Honda Stream for a drive to Mt Aso. Once we left the city behind the scenery was beautiful with green clad mountains and rice fields. One of the largest volcanic calderas in the world at 25km across and 100km circumference, Aso is a fertile region and very picturesque. The centre peak Mt Nakadake is still active and can be reached by car or ropeway to the top station where a short walk takes you to the viewing area around the active crater.
