Let's go check out the (purported) birthplace of Japanese porcelain. Took a 'local' (stops in lots o little villages & towns) train ride thru the Kyushu countryside to the south & west of Fukuoka; went via Karatsu & Imari, instead of south to Tosu & then west thru Saga. Took us 3 hours vs. 1.5, but made for a relaxing scenic ride. There is some dispute about where porcelain was first produced in Japan, but most evidence indicates that Arita was first; based on the discovery of Kaolin (aka China Clay) deposits near Arita in the early 17th...
