Oct 22, 2017 - Chilled out day in Milano
Well readers, Fortunately, there were some shops open today.................so it was a chilled out day in Milano. Thank you for coming on board and travelling with us on our trip around Italy. One more lug back to the Milano Centrale station tomorrow, to catch the train to the airport, and we are done. It has been fabulous, a treat for all senses. Just think, you have been and seen too, but without the calories!!!!! We have enjoyed sharing our ventures with you. Hope they were not too boring. Love Marco and Giana xJump to full entry
Oct 21, 2017 - The last lug!
Our day in Genova was well worth the visit. A big port city, that is where you head off to Cinque Terre. We would have walked that again if time allowed. Maybe the coin tossed in the Trevi fountain in Rome will bring us back to Italy again one day, so we could do the walk then. We spent a few hours at the Maritime museum. 5 floors of interesting history, maps, boats, info about Christopher Colombus, to the story of migration. From there we visited the most beautiful Basilica SS Annunziata del Vastato. Real gold in the painting on the...Jump to full entry
Oct 21, 2017 - The gangs all here
Susan and Cor’s flight is going to be an hour late so they will be late for lunch. So Gail and I head into town ourselves. Today we are going to go to Casa Nova which we haven’t been to in few years. It is down very steep steps from the main trulli street into was likely once a trulli storage room. It is a great spot and the food still excellent. Fave e cicoria to share, grilled giant prawns (always messy to eat), insalata mista and patitine fritta. We get back before the girls arrive but not too far ahead. Gail whips up a small platter of...Jump to full entry
Oct 21, 2017 - Pesto! Pesto!
All travelling well. A long day travelling, but we have reach a professional class of train passengers., thinking that we know all the tricks. Well that was until we got off at our Milano Rogeredo connection to go south to Genova. Our reservation paper says, coach 2. Ok, there are no announcements or signs indicating where to get onto this train. We punt on half way. As the train pulls in, we watch the carriage numbers pass by, ok, a 100m sprint along the platform to get on the train. We are still moving down the platform, as the guard...Jump to full entry
Oct 20, 2017 - Trenitalia afficionados
We did not sleep well on our last night in Praiano. The power was interrupted several times, and came to life with a loud thump, also triggering the ping from the ipad recharging. We had an early start to the day. Our very caring host insisted we have a croissant and coffee before we leave. So that we did. Of course, loading our bags into the school bus, standing in the middle of the road to load them, was a little easier at just after 7am, as the traffic had not really started. Sita buses run very punctually. No doubt, if there was an...Jump to full entry
Oct 19, 2017 - Coffee & Wine Tour
Today began with another wonderful breakfast at Casa Gregorio. There were two different breakfast wraps containing cheeses and meats. Along with that was a myriad of yogurt, pastries, and fruit. Several of us went for an after breakfast walk up to the top of old town enjoying its beautiful charm. At the crest of the hill, overlooking the valley, stands a beautiful monument representing a mother protecting her child in the aftermath of WWII. The movie "Two Women" starring Sophia Loren was made in this exact location recalling this story. We...Jump to full entry
Oct 18, 2017 - Getting gutsy!
Well hello again, It is night time.. We have finished a beautiful meal of al dente home made pasta with scampi, clams, mussels and a prawn. A freebie appetiser of a crumbed fresh anchovy filled with mozarella. Delightful. Sipping a freebie sample of limoncello. And that is also a treat. Just thought you needed to see some pics from Amalfi. Hey, we are full of bravado, now, travelling on these buses. Actually, it was a preparation for our two journeys tomorrow. We are having a small trip to Amalfi, then a hour and a quarter of new territory...Jump to full entry
Oct 18, 2017 - Room with a view
Yesterday, after our arrival and a bit of time to settle we headed out to explore Praiano. Most of the traffic travels slowly, but there are some crazy young boys riding motor bikes with no helmets, or leather, riding as if there is no tomorrow. We decided to check out the local cathedral. Pretty amazing just sitting on the rocky edge of the mountain. A labyrinthine walkway and 300 steps to the beach, lead passed houses with vege gardens, caringly tended by wiry, sun tanned men. There was no real beach, just large rocks and beautiful clear...Jump to full entry
Oct 18, 2017 - Battle of the Sita buses
A leisurely stroll tugging our packs over cobbled streets down to the Salero jetty. Easy. Buy tickets, sit back and enjoy the boat ride. This entire Amalfi coast line is so rugged and mountainous. There are two ways to get to the Amalfi coast. One is to catch a very dirty, unconditioned train from Naples, probably standing all the way. You will also lug your luggage down a long flight of steps, getting jostled by the tourists heading to Pompei. The alternative, is to catch a better train to Salerno. Then, either catch a ferry or bus to the...Jump to full entry
Oct 18, 2017 - Farm and Prosciutto Tour
Farm and Prosciutto Tour - With a later breakfast and departure time today, Judi B and I decided to take a walk to the hilltop park overlooking the valley below and attempt some sunrise pictures. At 7:15 there is little activity except for a few locals leaving for work and the church bells tolling! Beautiful morning! Back to the cottage to shower, dress and go to the coffee bar for our breakfast of yogurt, fresh fruit, frittata, bread pudding and pastries plus your choice of coffee! Our first stop is down the hill to visit Pastorella, the...Jump to full entry
Oct 17, 2017 - Antipasti
My day started with getting up in time to see a beautiful sunrise out the front door of our cottage. After breakfast, where all our goodies from the night before were available in addition to the normal breakfast offerings of an Italian variety, we headed out to the local village farmer's market and flea market. There we so many fresh products--fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, sausage, bread, spices, and more--and opportunities for souvenirs. I bought some anise seed for one of the cookie recipes I want to make at home and Wanda bought some...Jump to full entry
Oct 16, 2017 - Canine class to Salerno, gateway to the Amalfi coast.
A slow start from Siracusa railway station. Sundays are quiet. Our new second class rail carriage was brand new, Very comfortable. Clean toilets but no food or drink vendors. Luckily we had packed our picnic from the Ortigia market the previous day. As we passed through Catania, Etna had shrugged her veil, and was proudly standing tall, wearing a mere wisp of smoke. Nice to see her. Hope she stays quiet. Once we arrived at Messina in Sicily, our train went into the bowels of a ship, and we took about 25 minutes to get to the Italian...Jump to full entry
