Sep 20, 2016 - Venice - Murano Island

Today Max and I decided to go over to Murano Island. We walked to the boats near San Marco square and were approached by a guy from the tourist bureau offering a free trip over to the island in a private taxi as part of a promotional campaign by the City of Venice..why not! So onto the private taxi, just the two of us and because it was a small boat compared to the ferries, we were able to go through the middle of the island instead of going around which made the trip not only shorter but interesting as well. We arrived on the island and...

The Three of Us

Sep 19, 2016 - Venice

Saturday morning, warm and sunny, lots of departures so we moved to a waterfront pitch with beautiful views, no puddles, and room to put chairs and table outside in the sun. But it was a mixed day with lots of dark grey cloud. Sunday similar, met the young lady in the next camper, travelling on her own with her 10 month old little girl, Katy, and French bulldog Amy, who sadly has useless back legs and has a trolley to get around on. In Germany, she told me, they have paid maternity leave until the children's first birthday, so she's made...

Sep 18, 2016 - Venizia

Venizia...do I need to say more? Of course I do! We started extra early this morning as we boarded the harbor pilot at around 6 am, where a huge number of guests where already up on deck to watch the slow sail into Venice by sea. The last time we were here, we came by car and never went out on the water. A completely different world. As you can see by the photos, we started off with another grey and drizzly day, but as seems to be the pattern, the skies cleared and we were treated to a sunny Sunday with very tolerable temperatures in the...

Sep 18, 2016 - Verona

We decided to the leave the apartment quite early today as the trip to Verona is just over 1 hour and we still had to catch the ferry around the Grand Canal to the train station. So off we go to the station we came to the day we arrived only to find there was no ticket office. Not knowing that we could have bought the tickets on the boat we headed off to Rialto where we knew there was a ticket office. Once there we not only ought our ticket to the station we bought the return one as well as the one to get us to the airport on Tuesday....

The Three of Us

Sep 17, 2016 - Day 1 Venice

After breakfast with map in hand we set off to see what we could find. Without getting lost we found San Marco Square along with hundreds of other people. Pretty impressive place to say the least. We walked around the square checking out the clock tower, the Basicila and Palace before wandering along the canel where we saw the bridge of sighs which is the bridge crossing the canal between the court room and the prison to transfer prisoners between the two. From here we wandered through little calles until we found the Ponte di Rialton....

Sep 15, 2016 - Venice Food Tour & Chef’s Table

Thursday, Sept 15, 2016 Venice Food Tour & Chef’s Table At 4 in the morning, we experienced a beautiful moon-set on the horizon. Tom managed to capture it in all its glory. We rose early and had breakfast in our room. Then down the gangplank and off to find the vaporetto ticket booth which was a tobacco store with a long line stretching out from it. We were booked for a food tour of Venice and had to be at the Rialto Bridge at 11AM, so getting the vaporetto early was imperative. We met with the rather large group of twelve and after some...

Sep 9, 2016 - Aboard Azamara Journey

Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 Aboard Azamara Journey Tom rose at 6AM and looked over our canal with the early morning glow and street lamps still lit. Our taxi driver had walked the 0.2 miles from his car in the parking lot and helped us roll our luggage back to it. There are no streets in Venice! We departed the Morasco Hotel at 11:15 AM and were driven to the cruise port and the Azamara Journey departure site. The helpful crew tagged our two suitcases assuring us we would meet up with them in our staterooms later that afternoon. After...

Sep 8, 2016 - The Vaporetto to Morano, Evening Gondola, and "Battle of the Bands"

Sept. 8, 2016 The Vaporetto to Morano, Evening Gondola, and "Battle of the Bands" After a good night’s sleep, we had a great breakfast at the hotel and waited until noon (our jet lag day, after all) to head out to Murano, the island famous for artistry in glass. We explored the shops where the glass ranged from elegant, unique, and expensive to mass produced trinkets. Nothing really whetted our appetites, except a lunch at Marlin Pizza where we had a mushroom-ham thin crust and a green salad. Back on the boat, we crossed the stretch of...

Sep 7, 2016 - Arrival in Venice

Sept. 7, 2016 Arrived in Venice Venice is a city in northeastern Italy and the capital of the Veneto region. It is situated across a group of 117 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges. These are located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. We had arranged with the hotel for a driver who would take us to the Piazza Roma where we would then be escorted on foot (he pulled the luggage, thankfully) the 0.2 miles from our hotel. (We took...

Sep 6, 2016 - Traveling to Venice

Sept 6, 2016 Traveling to Venice Our Delta flight is scheduled for 1PM, so there was no rush to get going too early today. We even had our last cup of our special coffee blend (of course there is NO coffee in Italy!!). The flight left right on time and we were off on our adventure. We flew to Detroit for an early evening connection to Amsterdam where we would land in the morning. The planned dinner meal was a bit delayed by heavy turbulence caused by the recent hurricane that was still wandering around the northeast coast of the US....

Jul 4, 2016 - Venice

So excited to be in Venice! This really is my favorite city! We are staying in a flat close to Rialto Bridge and also close to St. Mark's square. Couldn't be a better location! However, it is tucked back in a little tiny alley way that is very difficult to find! We have found ourselves lost on more than one occasion, even with the help of google maps! The flat is very spacious. It has a bedroom, living room with a fold out couch, kitchen area, and a loft. I love staying in the these Airbnb's because you get to see what is is really like to...

Jun 22, 2016 - Venice

Back on the road to Venice. We checked out the parking on the main land to take a bus. Didn't look all that inviting as it was hot and more hot. So we road across the bridge over the lagoon into Venice and found a parking lot right off the bridge. Parked and packed a backpack for the night. Across the foot bridge into the main square to look for our hotel. As luck, and good planning, happened our hotel was the first one on the left past the bridge. So we checked in and enjoyed the air conditioning for a few minutes. Then back into the heat...
