Jun 7, 2018 - Last day
We caught the ferry to Venice early this morning and arrived in Venice by 11:00. It took awhile to figure out the best way to get to the hotel with our very heavy bags but we finally caught a water bus and checked into the hotel. Megan’s college roommate, Kelli, lives an hour north of Venice and was coming to meet us. We jumped on the water bus and headed down the canal to check out a church that looked interesting while we waited for Kelli to get there. Unfortunately, most of the churches close from noon to 3 or 4 o'clock. We admired the...Jump to full entry
May 24, 2018 - Street maze
Small alleys and narrow carless streets with a plethora of bridges weave their way through Venice. Masses of tourists wandering about spreading the patience thin of the locals trying to pass by. We wandered the streets yesterday but today we had a purpose...see the basicilica and Doges palace. We accomplished our goal and was blown away by the interior of the church. Every inch a masterpiece floor, walls and ceiling covered. Some say it is the grandest church in Italy. The entire ceiling and top third of the walls covered in gold mosaics...Jump to full entry
May 23, 2018 - The Adventure Begins...
We arrived safely to Venice today after 16 hours of travel with layovers and transportation to the hotel. From the airport we took a water bus to the hotel. We traveled down the main canal to the dock not far from where we are staying. It was too early to check in so we dropped off our bags and started sight seeing. San Marcos square was first on the list. The square is smaller than we had expected but the church is as grand as could be. We did a self guided walking tour of the outside of the church and surrounding buildings on the square...Jump to full entry
Jan 19, 2018 - Venice
The departure from Prague was easy and our cab driver to the airport was our best yet. He actually conversed with us which we found very unusual. Marco Polo Airport was also a breeze probably because of the off season. Catching a water bus from the airport to a landing pier close to our hotel was a stroke of genius from the 'financier'. We may have been reasonably close to our hotel but we still managed to get lost for awhile. Some directions said to cross 2 bridges while others said 3. After crossing the same ones more than once we got it...Jump to full entry
Oct 14, 2017 - Venice
We left our cruise ship at 8:30 AM, took the People Mover tram to Piazzale Roma, bought 24 hour Vaporetto passes, took the Vaporetto to St. Marks square, caught our shuttle to Isle de la Rosa, checked into our hotel and took the shuttle back to Venice. All by 10:30. Wandered through St. Marks square but didn't go into the Basilica nor the Doge's Palace. We more or less people watched. We decided to just walk through the side streets and see where we ended up. One Place was the Accademia Museum at the foot of the Accademia Bridge. The museum...Jump to full entry
Oct 13, 2017 - Venice
Get up early they said. We will be coming into Venice at 6:30 AM they said. Venice is beautiful in the lights they said. Problem was the fog was so thick the port of Venice was closed at 6:30 AM and we stayed anchored outside of Venice until noon when the port finally opened. We finally got off the ship at 1:30 and then spent the next 5 hours wandering the streets and getting lost multiple times. I have heard various things about Venice. Too crowded, it smells, too dirty, too many pigeons. With the exception of the last, I have found Venice...Jump to full entry
Sep 30, 2017 - Pleasantly lost in Venezia
Sept.30 Venezia How can you sum up 3 days in Venice. A glittering jewel of a city, especially in the bright sunshine, nothing else like it of course. The key is to find the hidden gems, best accomplished by wandering the alleys amongst the canals and getting hopelessly lost at least twice per day. The image I have is of thousands of people, representing all nations on earth, deposited into a huge corn maze where half the paths are water- they wander about with little maps, looking up, down, side to side, giggling, saying 'this is the way!',...Jump to full entry
Sep 29, 2017 - Ode to the Italian lavatory
Sept. 29 Ode to Italian lavatories.. yes, it deserves a whole chapter in my blog. I must begin by saying I LOVE Italy with every fibre of my being and nothing, NOTHING! including the infamous hole in the floor squatter would prevent me from travelling here again...yearly if I could. Also that I'm not so finicky- after all, I've used an outhouse in the woods, and I've carried tissue in a bag in a pack and used nary a hairdryer across Northern Spain for a month. But seriously, one must relish the Italian bathrooms as part of the adventure and...Jump to full entry
Heather did her early morning 4 miles around the lake today. At breakfast she took some special drink without a name and asked one of the server's what it was...spruce water! Met Branko who informed us the morning would be nice weather, not so nice this afternoon (because Heather washed her hair again!). We first stopped at the town of Kranjska Gora, a ski resort area. Here the homes were more Bavarian style. We went over to the beautiful lake fed by the river that was a very light aqua blue color. We drove up the Julian Alps with all of it...Jump to full entry
Sep 5, 2017 - Best Map of Venice!
Breakfast and met Branko at 9 am for our 3 hour walking tour of Venice with our guide Elane. Venice is made up of 118 small islands connected across the canals of the Ventian Lagoon by 400 canals. The architectural style of the buildings is Venetian Gothic, a mixture of Gothic style with Byzantine and Ottoman influences. Population of Venice is 55,000. Because of tourism, the cost to live on the island is very expensive, many people have moved to the mainland and only work here. Each section of the island has its own square with a well in...Jump to full entry
