Italy 2017

Jun 14, 2017 - Last days in Venice

Sunday: Today we visited a church of a very different kind - the Peggy Guggenheim Museum devoted to modern art. It is housed in Peggy’s villa on the Grand Canal where she is buried along with fourteen of her beloved dogs. We also heard a short talk about her life and times. Seems like Peggy was quite a gal. Once when asked how many husbands she had had, she replied “Do you mean mine or other peoples’?”. Nevertheless, she collected an impressive amount of art from the mid to late 20th century. We saw Warhol, Dali, Pollock, Picasso plus many...

Jun 9, 2017 - Venice

Friday: This morning we left by train for Venice. For two people who do not care for big cities, we found Bologna most enjoyable. It is full of interesting places to visit and see and the city centre is easy to get around on foot (forget the Red Bus!). Many parts of the centre are pedestrian areas beautifully covered porticoes and most vehicles are restricted from coming into the old centre. Bicycles are a bit of a hazard - they ride them with great speed and skill at dodging pedestrians. Our apartment at Al Capello Rosso was just off the...

Jun 7, 2017 - Venice - UPDATE NOTES

Hi all, So where have we been, England, Belgium, Netherlands, well for half an hour on autobarns, Germany, Austria. Wow all that in 4 days, we have not really looked deeply into each country or done a detailed study but have an insight into them. The tour has an excellent Tour Director, an excellent Italian driver and an excellent Mercedes Benz coach. The coach itself is a full size vehicle but with 6 rows of seats removed so the room between the seats is substantially increased to the point where it is hard to get you feet onto the foot...

May 26, 2017 - Return to Italy

Friday: Our Best Western hotel in was not even in central Mestre and required a good walk to either a train station or bus stop to get anywhere. We had a slow start to the day after such a late night and around midday decided to revisit Padua for the afternoon. For many, the Scrovegni Chapel and its frescoes by Giotto are the main reason for visiting Padua but we had seen them on a previous trip and had also visited the old university. So after a light lunch we decided to see the Romanesque Baptistry of the Duomo regarded as one of the...

May 5, 2017 - Day in Venice

Day trip to Venice today. Bit worried we were still too exhausted from previous day but we took it easy. 2hour train trip each way from Bologna so we got plenty of rest and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Venice was eyerything we were hoping for. Did a visit through the Doge's Palace https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doge%27s_Palace. It was worth it and we got to walk over the Bridge of Sighs. Called that because it was the bridge that the prisioners walked over to their imprisonment. Sigh! We walked around the Grande Canal over the Rialto...

May 4, 2017 - Stresa

We loved Stresa. Our hotel was right in the central Piazza. A small town but very quaint.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stresa. Started out a good day with a beautiful breakfast of local hams, cheese and croissants. Went downhill from there: - couldn't buy tickets at train station at Stresa and got sprung by inspector - missed connecting train at Milano - ariived at apartment in Bologna that was less than clean - couldn't find a supermarket - too exhausted to find good food 𯘫

Nov 8, 2016 - Venice

Tuesday November 8th. I woke up and headed down for the breakfast buffet and it was quite impressive. There were croissants, fruit salad, cereals, scrambled eggs, meats and cheeses. Again the staff were very nice and did speak English thankfully. . After I finished, I checked out and had them hold my bags for later. I took a very pleasant Vaporetti ride to Rialto and a walk along the shopping district. I found a few gifts and had an espresso before moving on and taking some photos of gondolas on the different waterways. I jumped on the...

My Trip To Italy

Nov 6, 2016 - PDX to Minneapolis to JFK to Paris to Venice

11/6/2016: It's now 7:30am and today is the start of my biggest adventure so far. It has been nerve-wracking getting to this point. Last night I kept thinking of things I forgot to pack and of course stayed up later then I wanted to, so not much sleep as usual. It's been a very emotional start to the day and I'm not sure why exactly but it is a huge undertaking. Maybe it's that after everything I put into planning this trip it's finally here and time to leave. Maybe it's that I'm overwhelmed by it all and maybe it's that I feel like I am...

My Trip To Italy

Sep 21, 2016 - Venice - Paris

Time to pack and move on to our next adventure. Enrico, our landlord arrived sharpely at 10am to do our checkout. We asked hIm about some of the paintings and furniture in the apartment. He explained they belonged to his grandfather and were about 200years old. The apartment is great and were sad to be leaving It. As our plane was not until late afternoon, Enrico put our luggage Into storage and we went off to explore a little more of Venice and to do some last minute shopping. I bought myself a leather purse with the money Denise gave me...

The Three of Us

Sep 20, 2016 - Venice - Murano Island

Today Max and I decided to go over to Murano Island. We walked to the boats near San Marco square and were approached by a guy from the tourist bureau offering a free trip over to the island in a private taxi as part of a promotional campaign by the City of Venice..why not! So onto the private taxi, just the two of us and because it was a small boat compared to the ferries, we were able to go through the middle of the island instead of going around which made the trip not only shorter but interesting as well. We arrived on the island and...

Sep 19, 2016 - Verona Walk & Fancy dinner

Monday, Sept 19, 2016 Verona Walk & Fancy dinner We had planned Verona as a center for exploration of the cities surrounding it. However, Monday seems to be a “day of rest” in this part of Italy and we had no place to go. So we decided to see what Rick Steves had as a “Verona Walk.” We headed out from our hotel and turned left directly to the Roman Arena. We had gone that way often in our search for restaurants. Today, we found a park bench and sat in the shade. Anne reviewed the walk and pointed out the attractions in the immediate area....
