Jun 20, 2016 - Are we in Italy or Germany?

We have spent the last week in our favourite campsite in Europe! Seiser Alm in the Dolomites, just north of Bolzano (home of the Ice Man). Everything about this place is wonderful from the stunning views to the “spa-like” bathrooms, the extensive free bus service right at the door to the 5-star restaurant on site. This place has everything. It is located right at the foot of some of the best hiking anywhere. We could live here……………. Some of you may remember our blog from almost exactly 2 years ago, when we spent time at this same...

Aug 15, 2014 - Vipiteno & Balzano, Italy

8/15/14, Friday Another country today, Italy! We left Germany, crossed the entire country of Austria, and stopped at Vipiteno, Italy first. Vipiteno is a medieval town known for its wine and leather goods. We sampled several local wines and schnapps at one of the local shops. We even tried their pear wine which is a specialty. When the pear bud starts, they tie a bottle around the bud so the pear grows inside the bottle. Then add various liquids depending on the taste you want and presto...pear wine, schnapps or whatever!! Robin checked out...

2014 European Trip

Jun 1, 2014 - Into Italy……or is it Germany?

We left Slovenia this week with a heavy heart, after close to a month of being held in its spell. We spent the first part of the week camped at the end of Lake Bohinj and then moved back to Dovje on the edge of the Triglav National Park for a couple more hikes before heading into Italy. Our last hike was perhaps the best of all with awesome views to the jagged peaks of the National Park and especially the 2,000 foot sheer north face of Mount Spik. Our memories of this tiny country are many, but a lasting one will be sitting eating lunch on...

Jul 2, 2012 - Dag 5

Apr 22, 2012 - Arriving in Bolzano, or Bolzen, depending on whether you are new Italian or old German

On to Bolzano. From Verona we went North toward the Alps. We passed numerous scenic villages, all of whom were marked by a tall church steeple. We followed the river Adige north to an area at the beginning of the Alps called the Dolomites. The valleys were formed by glaciers, so instead of the rolling hills like Texas, these valleys are cut sharp and deep between the mountains, making for some pretty dramatic views. Bolzano is also known as Bolzen. The people up here speak German as their main language. This area was once dominated and...

Aug 20, 2008 - Bolzano

Today I escaped the heat of the Veneto and headed up into the Italian Alps. Bolzano is a bit cooler, but still pretty warm. I'm feeling kind of crappy, so it was a pretty low-key day. It must be from running around in the heat yesterday, I could be a bit dehydrated. I've been here before a few years ago, so didn't feel the need to go off and explore. The only thing I did go see was the "Ice Man" - a preserved 5,000 year old man who was found in a glacier not far from here. He is remarkably well preserved, including his clothes and hair....
