Jun 20, 2016 - Are we in Italy or Germany?

We have spent the last week in our favourite campsite in Europe! Seiser Alm in the Dolomites, just north of Bolzano (home of the Ice Man). Everything about this place is wonderful from the stunning views to the “spa-like” bathrooms, the extensive free bus service right at the door to the 5-star restaurant on site. This place has everything. It is located right at the foot of some of the best hiking anywhere. We could live here……………. Some of you may remember our blog from almost exactly 2 years ago, when we spent time at this same...

La Dolce Vita

Jun 18, 2016 - Klausen to Ratschings to Merano

Day 29 Klausen to Ratschings Another sunny morning greeted me when I woke. Ian and I had a huge room with large beds. A real contrast to the dorm we had stayed in two nights before. Due to our late arrival we had not seen much of Klausen and we were to see even less today. After breakfast the people who stayed in the other two hotels met up at ours to get their maps and instructions. To complicate matters there was a market setting up in front of our hotel lots of interesting breads, pickles and cheeses were for sale as well as olive oil....

Aug 15, 2014 - Vipiteno & Balzano, Italy

8/15/14, Friday Another country today, Italy! We left Germany, crossed the entire country of Austria, and stopped at Vipiteno, Italy first. Vipiteno is a medieval town known for its wine and leather goods. We sampled several local wines and schnapps at one of the local shops. We even tried their pear wine which is a specialty. When the pear bud starts, they tie a bottle around the bud so the pear grows inside the bottle. Then add various liquids depending on the taste you want and presto...pear wine, schnapps or whatever!! Robin checked out...

2014 European Trip

Jun 1, 2014 - Into Italy……or is it Germany?

We left Slovenia this week with a heavy heart, after close to a month of being held in its spell. We spent the first part of the week camped at the end of Lake Bohinj and then moved back to Dovje on the edge of the Triglav National Park for a couple more hikes before heading into Italy. Our last hike was perhaps the best of all with awesome views to the jagged peaks of the National Park and especially the 2,000 foot sheer north face of Mount Spik. Our memories of this tiny country are many, but a lasting one will be sitting eating lunch on...

Jul 2, 2012 - Dag 5

Jun 12, 2012 - Saturday, Hotel Lago di Braies to Toblach

Saturday, June 9th, 2012: Hotel Lago di Braies to Toblach (Dobiacco). A great surprise and two more trials. This hotel was just what I needed after my lost in the wilderness and surviving the moraine field hike Friday. A nice hot shower, my own private room, a stunning view, nice proprietor, nice proprietor's dog, and dinner in the 5 star dining room included. It was luxury in a remote setting, like the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite, but without the crowd, or price. It seems like you can tell if the proprietor will be nice or not by whether or...

Jun 11, 2012 - Friday: Rifugio Fanes to Hotel Lago di Braies

Friday, June 8, 2012: Rifugio Fanes to Hotel Lago di Braies There I was, in the middle of an alpine field with no trail-markers and no trail. Nothing but hills and short stalked green grass clumps. And as soon as I found a trail, the trail number didn't make sense. And then it started raining. But the day started out well. I had the best coffee that I'd ever had in Italy at Rifugio Fanes. Plus I had the granola that I love so much now, and the brown bread with the little seeds. They were shocked when I told them how much I liked the coffee....

Apr 22, 2012 - Arriving in Bolzano, or Bolzen, depending on whether you are new Italian or old German

On to Bolzano. From Verona we went North toward the Alps. We passed numerous scenic villages, all of whom were marked by a tall church steeple. We followed the river Adige north to an area at the beginning of the Alps called the Dolomites. The valleys were formed by glaciers, so instead of the rolling hills like Texas, these valleys are cut sharp and deep between the mountains, making for some pretty dramatic views. Bolzano is also known as Bolzen. The people up here speak German as their main language. This area was once dominated and...

Aug 20, 2008 - Bolzano

Today I escaped the heat of the Veneto and headed up into the Italian Alps. Bolzano is a bit cooler, but still pretty warm. I'm feeling kind of crappy, so it was a pretty low-key day. It must be from running around in the heat yesterday, I could be a bit dehydrated. I've been here before a few years ago, so didn't feel the need to go off and explore. The only thing I did go see was the "Ice Man" - a preserved 5,000 year old man who was found in a glacier not far from here. He is remarkably well preserved, including his clothes and hair....

Sep 21, 2005 - Workshop in Trento, Italy

After returning from South Bend, I had one week to prepare for a talk in Trento, Italy. I attended a workshop for 3 days and it was in such a beautiful setting. We stayed in the town of Trento but the workshop was in the Nuclear Physics Institute just outside of town. As you can see, there were mountains all around. We arrived on Sunday at the Venice airport and were going to spend a couple of hours around there, but it was raining. It did not seem like such a good idea anymore, luggage, rain, a city of water. I was only there for a few...

Living in Leuven

May 15, 2005 - Cortina

Went into Cortina town for breakfast and then walked the streets - thankfully being off season the shops were closed as they were all very expensive. We then went for a drive to see where Malcolm, Silvia and Krantz used to go skiing. As Cortin is near the Austian border (it used to be part of Austria) the food was much heavier. Ingrid had Spatzle (small spinach gnocchi) and Malcolm had Canerolli (breadcumb dumplings with spinach and with prosciutto) both of thes with Speck (aniseed bread). We then went for a shot walk near the waterfalls...
