Sep 12, 2018 - Pisa and a winery

We left Florence and were on the way to our next stop, Venice or Venizia, as the Italians call it. As usual, we made a couple interesting stops along the way, in addition to our comfort stops. Our first stop was the town Pisa and of course….the leaning tower. After hearing about this all my life, we were actually going to see it. Because the area gets so crowded with tourists, they have a central parking area outside the walled area of the tower for the tour buses. Then we took a tram to the tower area. Within a few minutes we were there...

Jul 25, 2018 - Day 10 Pisa

On are way to Florence, we stopped at Pisa. The old walled city was much smaller I thought it would be considering it was such a powerful city-state in the 13th and 14th centuries. But the leaning tower did not disappoint. We ate lunch next to the tower. That’s something I never thought I would do.

Jun 10, 2018 - Breakaways 'Treasures of Tuscany' June 10-11, 2018 Pisa & Home

Sigh, today is our last day in Italy and I am very sad for it all to end.  Doris, Jessica and I head down to breakfast and met up with the others for breakfast. At 9:30am we say goodbye to those leaving for home either via Munich or London.  Hugs all around and now we are only 5, our group is dwindling. Gail, Dave, Jessica and I walk towards the Tower and make our way towards the old centre of Pisa.  We found some nice shops and had a little shopping frenzy which made us all very happy.  As we got closer to the Stazione Centrale, we had...

Jun 9, 2018 - Breakaways 'Treasures of Tuscany' June 9, 2018 San Quirico to Pisa

I woke before my alarm to beautiful Tuscan sunshine streaming through the shutters.  Gosh it is beautiful here, and I really don't want to leave! I met the group in the dining room and, as always, everyone was engaged in lively conversation as we are all preparing to leave.  We arrived from all different directions, and we are leaving the same way to various parts of Italy, England and Canada.   Bill and Deirdre have already left for Pisa and the next group to leave are Holly, Don and Janice who are off to Siena.  The first of many goodbyes...

Jun 1, 2018 - Breakaways 'Treasures of Tuscany' June 1, 2018 - Pisa

I awoke at 4am and couldn't get back to sleep so eventually just got up and headed down for breakfast.  Several people have arrived early to Pisa, so we spend several hours catching up and hearing of their adventures so far.  Lynne and I are staying close to the hotel today to greet those arriving today. Firstly, Lynne, Colin and I did a superstore run for snacks for tomorrow's bus ride and, of course, to top up the wine supply in our respective rooms.  There, that is done.  Next is to confirm the arrangements for this evening's 'Bubbly...

May 31, 2018 - Breakaways 'Treasures of Tuscany' May 31/18 - Arrival in Pisa

Up at the crack of dawn at 4:30am (yes it was already light out!) and by 5:15am we were on our Hoppa bus to Terminal 5 for our BA flight to Pisa. Finally the day has come. We check our bags, go through security, and it is only 6:15am. Time for breakfast. Lynne & Colin have beat us to the airport and are already in the Giraffe Cafe. We join them and order breakfast. Rod announces, I am on vacation I am having a Bailey's & Coffee with breakfast. Charlene seconds that and the vacation begins! Our flight leaves on time and we have a short 2...

May 30, 2018 - Pisa

Wednesday 30th May: A day in Pisa. On previous trips we had avoided Pisa but this time we decided to go for the day. We walked to the train station about 1km away. The regional trains are fast and, with a quick change in Empoli, we arrived in Pisa about 11.00am and walked up through town to The Field of Miracles stopping for a coffee on the way. It was a grey day with rain expected but that did not deter the crowds and the white and pale grey marble of the Cathedral, Tower, Baptistery and Camposanto stood out magnificently in their sea of...

Feb 17, 2018 - Pisa

The return ferry ride from Elba to the mainland was smooth as silk and as soon as we disembarked we headed for the hills. Those hills being any around the Pisa area with old hilltop towns and there were plenty. Volterra was one of the big ones but by accident we came across Massa Marittima and it was fantastic. They all have fascinating similarities but some have something special, MM was one of those. So we lingered longer, and had a coffee, or two. We decided to base ourselves for a few days in an area dating back to the 1st Century and...

Oct 2, 2017 - Florence to Pisa

What to say about Pisa? I should have insisted I could climb the tower! The bus trip there went through more of the very, very flat land seen from Venice to Florence. Deltas or flood plains? Rich alluvial soil. In this section there were lots of plant nurseries, especially trees, as well as farms. When i bought my ticket i had remarked that if i could have a breathing space every now and then on the way up I could make it up the tower. The ticket seller replied that with big crowds it is a constant movement; you cant stop! He didnt think...

Jul 20, 2017 - Days 17 and 18

Yesterday was an unteresting day. We had three lectures and then after lunch we went to the hospital portion of the university and applied x-rays and CT scans to some of the bones. Sadly nothing cool came up and of course the one clavical theh grabbed from my skeleton was the wrong one. It was still cool getting to watch them use the big machines. I would have love to volunteer as tribute as a living skelton but they like the dead ones better. They said and i quote "the living ones aren`t good at following directions." All I can say is Wow....

Jul 18, 2017 - Days 13, 14, 15, and 16

Hey guys sorry I haven't updated since Friday lots to do and I went to sleep early. So Saturday some of us went to Florence and it was not all that interesting since I had been before with Haley. We arrived in Florence at 10:45 and had an early lunch/ late breakfast. I had my caffe crema and a sandwich. For those of you who don't know what caffe crema is its a frozen coffee similar to frappuccino just straight coffee. After that we headed to the Duomo and got lots of pictures. We were gonna meet up with some other people of our group but we...

Jul 14, 2017 - Day 11 and 12

I can't believe how fast this trip has gone. I have one week left in Pisa! So yesterday we did a lot of paper work and I made a lot of progress on my skull. The paper work we have been working on is figuring out if our skeletons have dental diseases or pathological diseases of any kind. Since mine is young he only has enamel hypoplasia. I literal feel like a dentist when I'm picking dirt out of his teeth. It's so cool. I will take a pic of the tools and have someone take a picture of me cleaning his teeth. HaHa. Our lectures yesterday were...
