Oct 31, 2006 - Taormina

We were up early to catch a ferry back to Messina (on mainland Sicily) and then caught a train to Taormina. Taormina is so BEAUTIFUL. We got in to the train station and then had to take a bus up to the town. It's built up on a mountain top. Found the hostel after quite a long walk. Really cute place. Decided to go out for dinner that night. Stopped off at an internet cafe first. It was halloween so some kids were dressed up wearing masks trying to scare people. I had called mom and they were setting off fire crackers in the background...

Jul 12, 2006 - Taormina

A bit of a sleep-in this morning after our late night the night before. We decide to hit the beach today as we have heard that some of the best beaches in Sicily are around Taormina. There is a cable car that we catch from the town of Taormina (on the top of the ridge) down to the seaside at a place called Mazzaro. There are numerous 'private' beaches here with deck chairs and umbrellas supplied (at a cost of course) we decide to take this option and there is no sand on the beach and the alternative is putting our towels on river pepples....

Jul 11, 2006 - Taormina - Sicily

Yesterday we spent the whole day travelling to Sicily. We left our hotel in Sorrento and 7.00am and caught a train to Naples. When we got to Naples, the earliest train was full so we had to wait 3 hours for the next one. Finally arrived after a ferry crossing plus another train at about 8.00pm - what a long day. This morning after breakfast we wander around the town - it's a very picturesque town perched high up on top of of a hill 900m above sea level. So the views everywhere are quite spectacular. In the afternoon we have booked in for a...

Jun 15, 2006 - Taormina

Ciao I hope that everyone is ok. I'm fine, a little frazzled as it remains incredibly warm here although I am not complaining! Also, the internet connection in the cyber cafe here keeps on crashing while I'm trying to upload photo's and it is really doing my head in (not to mention the wallet as it's not cheap). I was most pleased because I left the cyber cafe yesterday feeling really good after being told by email that I'd make a wonderful travel guide or presenter (Grazie mon amica). It would almost be my ideal job, not sure that I'd like...

Dave in Italia 2006

Jun 14, 2006 - Ciao

Ciao, When I was planning this trip, I told some people that I was planning to visit Taormina, and they were like (sorry, I thought that I wouldn't mention names) "You can't go there. It's beautiful". Honestly, some people are such snobs. I say this in the knowledge that I am being perfectly hypocritical (I am one myself, as anyone who has talked to me about travelling before will have very quickly realised). Quite what was meant by this vicious snub I have yet to work out. Well, Nadia wasn't wrong (oops!), and Taormina is absolutely...

Dec 1, 2005 - M: The Big Blue - Taormina

Taormina is everything you've imagined the Mediterranean to be, perhaps even better. Nestled under the mighty Etna, and overlooking the deep blue sea from high cliffs, Taormina offers picture-perfect views, great walks around town, splendid hikes, and a wonderful beach. Contrasting with the weather we endured throughout most of our Italian holiday, the sun and the mercury were up in Taormina. We could take off our fleeces and dip our toes in the sea, in December, and this was not Hawaii.

Oct 11, 2005 - We are at the seaside

Well, Ragusa seems a long time ago now. The busking festival was wonderful. We went to the opening event where all the buskers did a turn. There were rather a lot of acrobats, but very accomplished ones. Some dancing, singing and mime. There was one turn from the UK - the Invisible Circus, which Steve and I found ourselves laughing at when no-one else was - who says humour is international. There was also a clown, who was brilliant. Though we only understood some of the language, he had an edge of danger, throwing stuff into the crowd, and...

Aug 29, 2005 - Day 2 in taormina

Believe it or not, I have now seen the sunrise THREE TIMES on this trip! This, however, was by far the most beautiful. I left my window open in my hotel room overnight, and just happened to roll over and open my eyes to the sky you see in the pictures. (Not many things can get me up at 6 am so willingly). After that, I had a lovely breakfast oustide (I've learned one plus to an Italian breakfast: they consider Nutella a breakfast food), and went for a short swim in the ocean. I then walked as much of the island as I could without feeling I...

Aug 28, 2005 - First day in Taormina

Taormina e belissima! I love it here! As soon as I got here, I called Mom & Dad and told them I never want to leave. The view from my hotel room is incredible. The beach is made of little tiny pebbles, so I am definitely glad I brought my flip-flops. Although it is a little tourist-heavy, but since I don't speak the same language as the natives, it turns out that I don't mind the tourists so much (especially the English and Australian ones!). The beautiful landscape must have gone to my head, because at dinner I was brave and ordered il...

Jul 1, 2005 - Sicily - Taormina & Mt Etna

Back from our little escape to the islands, we returned to Sicily and planted ourselves under the very active volcano of Mount Etna; in the town of Taormina. The East coast of Sicily is a lot more picturesque, with beautiful volcanic rock beaches. We managed to take a little drive up as far as they allow you to go by car, on the North side of Mt Etna. The landscape is covered in rivers of dried lava, you can literally feel what it must have been like to watch it come down the mountain, as if you were standing in front of it marching toward...

Mar 21, 2004 - Greetings from Taormina

We are in the lovely city of Taormina, at the first internet point we have been able to find on our journey. The city is on the ocean, and is absolutely beautiful. To recap our trip: we landed in Palermo on the 18th, and had many problems getting from the airport to town, then more problems finding our way around town. We never did find the B&B where we had reservations, but we happened on the Hotel Joli, parked, went inside and got a room. We walked around Palermo just looking at all the people. The traffic is indescribable. Motos, the...
