May 19, 2016 - La Spezia

Today we woke to pouring rain. Had a shower and was drying my hair and blew the fuse. Gave up looking for fuse box and went downstairs for breakfast. Had a great little breakfast in their lounge area. The hostess let us hang out while it rained and we looked on line for our next lodging. We found a place in La Spezia.. We loved the name and the location looked good. So we booked the "Jolly Roger" for two nights and headed in that direction. We again thought the avoiding the tolls would give us some great views. Wow did it ever. We went from...

May 19, 2014 - La Spezia

La Spezia, one oft he gateways to the Cinque Terrestrial,is yet another beautifull part of Italy. Once the Naval stronghold of Italy, during wartime ships and submarines were built on mass here. Today it is an important trade port , one of the busiest in the country,as well as Italy's naval base. The port also gives access to the Cinque Terre for the many tourists who travel there by boat, and is also start point for the southern entry to the many walking tracks leading there. I caught the ferry from La Spezia to Porta Venere and then hiked...

Oct 20, 2012 - Leaving the villa to drive to Nice the quick way - Autostrada along the coast

Saturday October 20 It is hard to believe that we have been in the villa for two weeks; they have sped by. The young girl, who showed us around the villa on arrival, came by last night to do the mandatory check for the 'Tuscany Now' contract. We both signed off that no more money was needed to change hands (we did not use the pool as it was too cold, we did not use the phone as we had our own and we did not have anyone cook or shop for us which is an option). Laura also came to say goodbye last night, so we were free to leave at any time....

Saturday 23/6/12 Castel Fusano, campground on the coast, 25ks from Rome central Happy birthday to Nickie!!. She is feeling good physically but just fretting a wee bit about Christa arriving safely on Monday. Loud loud music from all directions last night, from the clubs along the beach. ..and earplugs didn’t help much. Needed a lazy day, so caught up on blog, lazed in the shade, lazed on the beach, did some research about trains to Cinque Terre…..enjoyed mushroom tortellini and chilli flavour sardines for dinner …shame that the Sicilian...

May 11, 2012 - La Spezia and the Cinque Terre

From Lucca I booked a little hotel in La Spezia for 4 nights. I knew it to be a port town and had read at the end of the Second World War, it became the point of departure for the survivors from the Nazi concentration camps. Also between 1945 and 1948 over 23,000 Jews managed to leave Italy clandestinely for Palestine. It is one of the main Italian military and commercial harbours and I imagined it would be a big uninteresting industrial town, but handy to the Cinque Terre. But was I surprised. It’s a lovely place. Our first day there we...

Mar 20, 2012 - From Florence to Cinque Terre

We took a train from Florence to La Spezia. It was a long trip…about 2 hours…but not too bad. About halfway through we got a great view of the mountains…the Alpuan Alps. Anyway, once we got to La Spezia, we were super hungry and waiting another 30-45 minutes for our train to cinque terre. We went to McDonalds…I’m not ashamed to say…and it was perhaps the best Big Mac I’ve ever had…with fries and a diet coke. Anyway, then we took our train from La Spezia…not a really pretty place…and went on to Manarola where our hotel was. The Cinque Terre...

Jul 19, 2011 - DIVERTED

Due to “unsafe weather conditions” we were warned to take our dramamine and put on our sea-bands as we were being diverted. This morning we docked port in LaSpeeza instead of Livorno as planned. The change caused some panic amongst guest trying to change tour plans. Our plans were easy to modify, but it unfortunately effects tomorrow where we have an all day tour planned with a private guide from the port of Naples to Pompeii and up the Amalfii coast. We were to get into port at 6 am, and now it will be 11:00. ??????? We will see how it all...

Oct 28, 2010 - Florence David

To make the most of our last day in Florence, we joined an organized tour to see the David and some of the other sights of Florence. We had a wonderful guide who took us on a quick bus tour of the area around Florence and then back to the Acedemia to see the David. We shared lunch with another tourist who was also doing the PM part of the tour. He was from China and worked for Microsoft and knew all about the University of Waterloo. He was skipping out of his IT conference for the day, figuring he could watch the conference later on the...

Dec 1, 2009 - Cinque Terre

We went to bed thinking that we would be docking in Livorno, the port city closest to Florence and woke up to find that we were in La Spezia. This disappointing news was followed by the fact that the ship was not at a dock, but anchored in the middle of the bay. This meant that tenders would be used to get everyone to shore, a tedious process at best. The explanation given was that a cargo vessel had been delayed in departing Livorno because of the weather and there was no room there for us. It turned out that for our tour to Cinque Terre,...

May 25, 2009 - On to LaSpezia

On board Trenitalia to Spezia, I am heading north west from Pisa through flat lands of cereal crops beginning to ripen, lettuce and other vegetable garden crops, nurseries of trees, and paddocks of race horses. There appears to be a great deal of industry in this area too. Plants with yards full of huge blocks of marble, crushed marble, and powdered marble seem to abound. The mountain ranges begin to dominate the view on either side of the train and in no time I am in darkenss. The trains do very little climbing in Italy. Rather, the...

Italy Spring 2009!

Aug 5, 2007 - Genova to La Spezia

This morning we retraced our steps in reverse from yesterday just to have one more look at a couple of the sights before leaving for La Spezia. Today being a Sunday, at the Cattedralle di San Lorenzo, church services were being held and there was an important religious leader in attendance, perhaps an archbishop. At the end of the service, the priests and deacons and the archbishop circled the inside of the church blessing the people in attendance. At our end of the Cattedralle was one young girl, perhaps sixteen years of age, who had her...
