Oct 5, 2016 - Leaving our holiday behind us

Today was our last morning on the boat ... and last night was our last good night's sleep we will have for days!! Up early, final packing, breakfast, and then ... off the boat by 7.30am (coz that's what the cruise line wanted). That would have been OK if we hadn't have had to wait until 10am until our transfer arrived ... at a terminal without seats or a waiting room (well, not one that we were able to find until it was too late to actually sit down!!). So we stood around and sat on some roadwork signs chatting with and watching those...

Oct 3, 2016 - All day at sea

Well there is nothing around us as far as the eye can see. The horizon is a long, long way away and there are no other boats, or land, or anything much at all really. You can see little ripples of waves, tiny wave motions, but not much white water at all. The boat is as calm as anything!! It’s just like we are sliding on a very even surface, moving, but not realizing we are. Mardi just said it’s like running a hot knife through butter, that’s how smooth a sail we are having. We awoke at 7.30 am (woo hoo), and then got ourselves ready, and...

Sep 28, 2016 - Heading for our cruise

Hi all We are about to leave Rome and board our cruise liner. Unfortunately there is minimal internet service whilst we are away. Therefore this may be my last uploaded journal entry before we get back to Rome. I will write every day, but you may not get to read anything until next week. Have a great week … I know we will! Sharon and Diana :) PS If I do manage to get an entry or two done I will send you an update notice. We have had a very relaxing day today, and extremely stress free! This morning we packed our suitcases, got ourselves...

Sep 27, 2016 - Roma, Italy

We are in Roma. After a really late night last night it was difficult to get out of bed this morning, but out we got and down for breakfast we went by 8.15am. After a continental breakfast, with scrambled eggs added, we had our hotel receptionist call us a taxi to take us to the Rossopomodoro Restaurant in the Largo di Torre Argentina ... and thank goodness we did. The receptionist from last night said it would take us about 15 minutes by bus so we thought we’d opt out of that advice and go via cab. It took us all of the 15 minutes, and...

Sep 10, 2016 - Day 4 Rome

After an early star, 5am, to catch the bus by 6am so we could meet our tour at the Piazza Republica by 7am. All went beautifully to plan and we arrived with 15 minutes to spare. Boarded our bus for the three hour drive to Pompeii, stopping for a coffee/ hot chocolate half way and a delicious pastry with a lemon custard. Back on the bus arriving in Pompeii to rain.....great left our rain jackets in Rome. We all bought umbrella's (€3) and off we went with our guide who is a qualified archeologist but had to give it up because she hurt her...

Sep 9, 2016 - Day 3 Rome

Today it was time to tackle the Coloseum, Pallatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Off on the bus and train and even managing to change lines at the Termni Station and arrive at the Coloseum to find another huge crowd. We paid for a guided tour to get through quicker as the tickets we had were only for the entrance to the place and no miss the queue facility so this was the quickest way in. Once inside even though there were a lot of people, it was easier to move around. The history of the place was interesting and although Denise and I didn't...

Sep 8, 2016 - Day 2 Rome

Today is Denises's birthday and we had a 10am tour booked for the Vatican. So allowing plenty of time we caught the bus down to the Vatican rather than walking the 2.7kl. We met up with our tour guide and were inside the Vatican in about 10 minutes instead of waiting in the queue which was very long and looked like it would take hours to get in. Our guide was very good and explained everything clearly. We did the Museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Bascilica before ending up back in the square where we had lunch people watching again....

The Three of Us

Sep 7, 2016 - Day 1 Rome

Well our first day in Rome.......what an eye opener. Firstly we thought we should put some food in the cupboard/fridge, so off we went to the super market. After walking in the wrong direction for who knows how far we finally found our way. Of course reading the labels was interesting to say the least but we managed and came home with everything from wine to washing powder. Well we think it is washing powder, it has pictures of clothes on the front of the box which was good enough for us. After a quick coffee and a yummy biscuit it was off...

Aug 31, 2016 - See ya Rome

Well today is our last day , we have made the most of it , set off early today for a tour of the Vstican Museum, Sistine Chapel and St Peters church . I had no idea of the history and artwork , sculptures , tapestries , mosaics and just what had been so well preserved . The church blew me away , I couldn't imagine anything so beautiful . The day started with a huge thunderstorm , cracks of lightning and thunder so close to us - I though surely this is not happening just because we are going to church . Anyway it was a good place to spend...

Jul 11, 2016 - Walk around Rome, Vatican City

Today we did our own walking tour around Rome and visited Vatican City. We saw some famous fountains such as Four Rivers Fountain and Trevi Fountain. Trevi Fountain is absolutely spectacular. If it hadn't been so hot, we would have stayed longer! We did face our backs to the fountain and threw a coin which should bring us a return to Rome someday. :) Next, we saw the Pantheon. Huge pillars on the outside but pretty simple looking. On the inside, it is really beautiful. Different colors of marbles, beautiful statues. Raphael loves the...

Jul 9, 2016 - Rome-Ancient City, Appian Way

This is our first day in Rome. Our flat is in such a great location...about three blocks from the colosseum and about one block from the Roman Forum. Our flat is quite cute. The downstairs has two sofa beds and a very small kitchen and the upstairs has a bedroom and bathroom. It is air conditioned...which is a HUGE plus! It doesn't blow out much air but every little bit helps! We are two doors down from a gelato stand so that is a bonus as well! We were at the Colosseum this morning when it opened and the place was virtually empty. We...

Jun 25, 2016 - Rome

Friday 24th June 2016 The UK decides to leave the EU – not what we wanted but the vote was close 52% to leave and 48% to stay. However, we decide to head for Rome – about three hours away and instead of taking a direct route we do what the SatNav says and use the Autostrada – good call – the road surface is good and the traffic not too bad including a 10Km tunnel through some fantastic scenery. On joining the GRA – think Rome’s answer to the M25 round London – we immediately get in the wrong lane and have to worm our way onto the correct...
