Nov 12, 2018 - Rome, Italy, Day 1

Today we left Malta and flew to Rome, Italy!! We got here about noon, checked into our beautiful hotel and met our new guide, Luca. He gave us a short walking tour around our hotel to show us the many places to eat. He also covered the schedule for the rest of the week. He then left us on our own. We're with another couple, Roger and Sandy. We strolled the streets to find something to eat. We found this wonderful hole-in-the-wall pizza place with the best pizza ever!! See photos!! Then we found the next most wonderful place to eat, the...

Oct 5, 2018 - Rome

Buonasera from Rome, Yesterday we ended up walking over 22 km! It started with a walk through Trastevere. Then we made our way up the hill to Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi and enjoyed a great view of the city. We carried on along the path, then down the hill and finally ended up in Vatican City. While there, we figured out where we needed to go the next morning for our visit to The Vatican Museum. Then we headed back across the Tiber River stopping for lunch and a well deserved rest. In the afternoon we ended up in Piazza del Popolo, climbed...

Oct 4, 2018 - Day 21- Rome and home - no content yet

Last day today. I left the kids sleep until 8:30 and after they showered, we went out to the garden for breakfast. There was an assortment of pastries, boiled eggs and the crunchy toast squares with jam, Nutella, cheese and butter. It was a beautiful morning. Then off to the room to do a final pack.

Oct 3, 2018 - Naples to Rome

Buonasera, Yesterday we took the high speed train from Naples to Rome. It was quick and easy. What a great way to travel! We checked into our hotel which is near The Pantheon. Sharon and Charlie arrived about half an hour later. Yippeee!!!! After getting settled we headed out for a walk. We went in search of The Trevi Fountain but due to a glitch with our navigation system (had it on car instead of walking mode...oops), we didn’t find the fountain. So we stopped for pizza and regrouped. After lunch we found the Spanish Steps, went for a...

Oct 3, 2018 - Day 20 - Sorrento to Roma via Napoli

I was awake a bit before the kids so showered and dressed before I woke them. The alarm went off at the agreed wake up time of 5:30 so I turned on the light with much fan fare. Wasn't received all that well. The kids are both tired so are struggling in the mornings however it wasn't too long before the showering, dressing and packing was underway. We were on schedule to get down to the port in plentry of time for our ferry. The desk clerk called a taxi and I jokingly said to the kids it will probably cost us €20 to go less than 1km. Guess...

Sep 25, 2018 - A few days in Rome

A few days of relaxation and sightseeing in Rome. We said our farewells to Ian on Sunday night, as he was taking the train to Verona early on Monday morning. Monday Tom, Richard and I went to the Vatican in search of our pilgrim Testamonium document. The place was open but alas they were too busy with other things, and asked us to come back in the afternoon. So we queued up for a look at St Peters cathedral. After about 45 mins the guys got in but my knees were showing (I was in shorts) and I was vanquished by the dress code police. Good...

Sep 23, 2018 - Stage 30 Monterosi to Rome (Vatican)

Overview/ Highlights Tried to get away before 8 this morning but didn’t quite make it. As we rode off down the road on a quiet Sunday morning, the Ferrari club zoomed past. Must have been at least 20 of them out for a drive along country roads. Wasn’t long before our route took us on a very narrow walking track next to the highway. It was lined with overgrown blackberries so tore at our arms as we passed. We soon found ourselves on more gravel roads and this time there were plenty of mountain bike riders about. Surely we impressed them...

Sep 19, 2018 - Day 6 - The Vatican

The hotel isn't in the greatest location however provided you are happy to catch the shuttle and train, bus and train or Uber to and from the train station, it's not bad for the price. Certainly not the 4 star hotel it's supposed to be and it looks as though it's used by lots of tour groups. We've been enjoying the buffet breakfast though. Lots of delicious, crunchy bacon (looks more like prosciutto), eggs, fruit, pastries, ham, continental meats and cheese. Riley was consistent with bacon, scrambled eggs and ham. We caught the 9:30 shuttle...

Sep 18, 2018 - Day 5 - Hop On Hop Off Bus tour

Hop On, Hop Off bus tour today. As we planned to stay into the evening to see Rome by night, we had a lazy morning and were too late to catch any of the shuttles to the train station. My plan was to catch the bus to the train station, Sarah's was to catch an Uber. As she was willing to pay, we caught an Uber. We left the train at Termini, and popped into the TIM kiosk to see how we could monitor the data on our SIM cards. Got that sorted and then set out to find the bus. It wasn't too difficult as it leaves from close by the terminal. We...

Sep 18, 2018 - Rome

Buonasera from Italy, We arrived safely in Rome and survived the taxi ride from the airport to our hotel! Yesterday evening after meeting our tour guide Catarina and our fellow tour mates, we headed out for a walking tour of the neighbourhood around our hotel. Then we headed across the Tiber River and continued our walking tour through Trastevere. Along the way we had some training on how to be safe on the narrow cobblestone streets...always be on the look out for cars and motorbikes. They come out of nowhere and you always have to be...

Sep 17, 2018 - Day 4 - Colosseum visit

We all slept pretty well last night. Hopefully we are in the time zone and keep doing so. Today is our visit to the Colosseum and I had the alarm set for 7:00am to make sure we had time for showers and breakfast so we could catch the 8:30 shuttle to the train station. We are also planning to buy our SIM cards so if we have time, we stop at Termini on the way to get them. So much for that plan. We went outside at 8:15 to find quite a few people already waiting for the shuttle so had to wait for the second trip to the train station. We...

Sep 16, 2018 - Day 3 - Around Rome

Our plan today was to lie around at the hotel and catch up to ourselves. That didn't quite work out because we were all excited to get into the city. The kids were keen to see the Colosseum so we had breakfast and then caught the 9:30 shuttle to Tiburtina, one of the local Metro stations. We had to wait for the second shuttle trip as there were a few other people waiting before us. I'd researched the Metro passes and decided a 7 day pass would probably work best for us as it can be used on the metro, train and buses. The fun began. The kids...
