Dec 13, 2017 - The Island of Java, Jakarta and Yogayakarta

Java We flew into Jakarta airport arriving later than expected around 10 pm after a two hour flight on which we were the only Europeans. We negotiated the ticketed taxi service and headed into Jakarta to our hotel the Ibis. It was clear our driver who spoke to the taxi fixer as we got in that he really was not sure where we were going. He spoke no english and we had difficulty trying to help him, google maps is often a mystery to us, it certainly was something above and beyond mystery to him.it was a 40 minute ride along one of the very few...

May 24, 2014 - Cycle Ride

We had Saturday off as a free day so I joined for the bicycle city tour. We left in the morning and spent about 4 hours exploring the villages and outskirts of the city. The bikes were a "little" dated but at least we had helmets this time. haha It was a little scary riding in the streets with all the cars and motorbikes plus being on the left side. But you get used to it and it was a lot of fun! We stopped at a tofu and Tempe making shop which was very interesting to see how it is made. We then got back on the road and traveled to some...

May 23, 2014 - Java's Beauties

Early rise (5am) today as we explored two breathtaking temples. The first, 8th century Borobudor, the largest Buddhist temple in the world. Beautiful and enigmatic, Borobudor is a marvelous structure and one of the great treasures of South East Asia. Built as a large single stupa and when viewed from above, resembles a giant mandala. The story of Buddhist cosmology is carved in stone that is portrayed in panels, explaining important lessons in the pilgrimage towards enlightenment . We were given traditional sarongs for our visit which we...

Jan 20, 2014 - Finding My Way In Yogya

Yogyakarta in Java and Ubud in Bali may exist in the same country but I'm not convinced they're on the same planet. Quickly, the straightforward beauty and complex culture has morphed into a strange world that a week is nowhere near enough time to figure out-- but just enough to start appreciating it and settling in. Again writing in transit as I utilize my third of six one-way tickets in Indonesia, it's amazing to reflect on how much one can experience in just seven days. Unlike my previous posts where I've mentally dumped out all my...

Apr 28, 2013 - Indonesia - 28/4-27/5

7/5/13 - Firstly, Indonesia blew me away from the word go. Arriving in Yogyakarta (pronounced Jogjakarta)it really did feel so different from all the other places I'd been to. Everyone was really friendly & the whole feel of the city was fab. As I hadn't been to this country before I wanted to throw myself in & so made my way to The Dieng Plateau a couple of days later by public transport to get a feel for the place. 130miles(not far) & 7hrs later(!) the charm had faded a little & I arrived up this mountain, surrounded by cloud & drizzle,...

Oct 19, 2012 - Besakih, Bromo, and Borobudur

UBUD One note to add: the night before our minor accident we enjoyed a Balinese massage for a whopping $5 CAD. It was amazing! Since our whirlwind adventure, so to say, riding motorbikes around Ubud the remainder of our time was dedicated to relaxing with a good book and/or crossword to let our bodies heal up. We did a lot of exploring around the main strip, Monkey Forest Road, trying out several of the local restaurants. We even became regulars at a little 'warung' (restaurant) down a side street that was to die for. The cashew ginger...

Mar 6, 2012 - Yogykarta after Boo-Boo

Hi all, We made it! And are back feeling good and looking forward to exploring and enjoying Indonesia. We checked into a Losmen, like a guesthouse. It's a dump but hey, we are in a good town and feeling sane. I din;t think it possible to miss tuk tuk's and rickshaws but I feel we are back on track. I love the local scam here "come to art gallery last day of exhibition" It's great when you see them with the same patter the next day "hey you where you go?" me: "an art gallery I must hurry it;s the last day!" they don't follow up after that...

Jan 14, 2012 - Indonesia summary

Indonesia post Hello friends and family! Well sorry for the long delay, but we've been having far too much fun to spend an hour sitting at a computer, which I'm sure you'll agree is a good thing. Soooo we arrived in Jakarta (Java) at the beginning of December. After the dirt and extreme poverty of Kathmandu this city with it's skyrises, sidewalks, paved roads, stop lights, and amazingly effective bus system left us in awe. We kept saying things like "wait, what? Holy crap Thomas there are LINES on this road, like for lanes!" or "Wow, I just...

Dec 6, 2011 - Insatiable Indonesia

Okay friends, it's been a little while since our last post, but we have finally arrived in Indonesia!, and it is perfect!!! wow, so much has happened, we really are slacking on this whole blog thing... we left off with finishing trekking in the Annapurna range, in Pokhara. So we hung out for a while in Pokhara, got nice and fat on endless cheap food, plenty of ice cream, and a little beer. We then took a short little trip to two sizeable lakes outside of town called Bengas Tal and Rupa Tal (tal means lake). We heard they were amazing,...
