Jul 7, 2017 - Livin' the island life again

Ok, finally got all the Ubud photos uploaded so go check those out again guys if you haven't seen them! After Ubud, we made a rather interesting journey out to Gili Air, a tiny island off of Lombak, Indonesia. The views ALMOST rivaled St.John. ;) We stayed in an adorable little beach bungalow at Mowie's on the beach. Ran around the island, biked around the island, swam, and just soaked in the view for a few days. It was paradise for sure.

Apr 20, 2017 - A little wander

Hello All, I hope you have enjoyed the last few journals, they were pretty long ones. Yesterday we had a little wander around Bali. Of course we would need weeks to actually see everything but we did spend a day driving around. We payed 700,000IDR for the driver and he took us around. We've seen 3 temples, one of them is on a lake and the last one, Tanah Lot is actually in the ocean. There was a Hindu temple festival as well So we saw like thousands of people. The highlight of the day was the giant rice paddies which is part of the...

Dec 27, 2016 - Lombok, finally

Always wanted to go to Lombok! Lombok is totally different from Bali. Bali is all Hindu, which is really weird in a Muslim country. Lombok seems like Bali probably was 20 years ago but its Muslim instead. This gives you mosques...or mini mosques which I have dubbed...mosquitos...and lots of cats. You don't have that in Bali, will get to that. We wended our way through rice paddies, dodging horse and carriage along the way...and of course, scooters and motos. Made our way to a weaving village. Don't bother trying any Bahasa, these guys all...

Nov 1, 2016 - Last day on Gili Air

Tim walked up to sort boat / horse etc out & retuned with my 2 skirts! Love it! Gave the lady 100,000 Rupeah (£6.14). Barg! Lovely time snorkelling with the turtles again, Tim took a video of me with them which is pretty good! Walked up and round island to watch sunset, sat on bean bags listening to two different songs (2 bars). Bought 3 bracelets from a young man who said he made them (just over £5 for the 3) Sunset was rubbish tonight but we are very chilled. Walked back round to Han's Bar. Have Merlin fish again, a bit tough this...

Oct 31, 2016 - Lovely Gili Air

Woke early. Germans talking English to their small children next door. -the walls are only bamboo and wood. Walked up road to get sun-screen; saw a lady lying down outside a shop with a sewing machine in it. Eventually, (I think/hope she understood) I left my Bali Batik skirt and Kuching fabric saying same same. She said it would be ready by 6pm tomorrow. Fingers crossed. Lovely chilled day on the beach again. Asked barman where we could get sun-screen and a couple from Slovenia gave us a bottle so had a couple of drinks with them.

Oct 29, 2016 - Tim spotted some Turtles! WOW!

Up early again. Chickens clucking all night. There are lots of chickens here! Pancake for breakfast again. Wow wow wow! Tim spotted a turtle which was approx 1 metre in length! AMAZING. We both expected them to be UK tortoise size. Grey and brown with pink and yellow. Later he spotted another but not quite as big. Love it here as so relaxing and about £25 a night so booked up to stay another 2 nights. Annoying boy waiter at bar played a couple of AC DC tracks for us which cleared the place. He then sat with us playing guitar & practising...

Rip off breakfast & very slow. Cancelled the juice. No bus at the jetty as promised so had to walk up to the jetty with our packs. Jan 15, 2016 - Kuta, Lombok

We tossed up a 3 day 2 night boat ride vs a 7 hour ferry trip followed by a 24 hour bus ride to return to Lombok....guess which won? Yes, we returned by boat, but it took a different route this time. We opted for "deck class" again and joined 15 or so others on our mattresses each night! We had a snorkeling stop, another stop where we walked to a waterfall and a swimming stop on a tiny island that literally took 10 minutes to walk around. Again, an interesting mix of mainly European tourists - even two couples round our age, one from...

Dec 24, 2015 - Lombok Island Time

Well, here we are, settling into retired life. It's amazing how quickly we have adjusted to "island time" - leisurely breakfasts, long walks along the beach and afternoon beverages watching the sun going down over the ocean. Indonesia is made up of 14,000 islands (6,000 inhabited) with a population of 255 million. It stretches for 2,830 km. The currency is Rupiah and for one NZ $ we get approximately 8,500. We were millionaires a few times over when we got money from the ATM! Things sound really expensive, like 25,000 rupiah for Nasi Goreng...

Mar 7, 2015 - The party island, Gili Trawangan

After having no access to media or nightlife at Via Vicare, we thought we might want a bit of civilization. The northern Gilis off of Lombok have become quite developed in just a few short decades, and Gili T is known as the "party island." We were up for a party! The island is serviced by little horse-drawn carriages, and our bungalow was an easy walk to a great snorkeling beach and happy hour spot (gotta love those 2 for 1 drinks!). We spent hours chatting with our hosts at Mama J's corners; Tamy from Slovenia, tim from Germany, and Nico...
