Dec 11, 2016 - Gals to Shillong

12/11 From Bon's email: "Ok, we're here in Shillong. Kind of a wild Sumo ride from Silchar, and squished for first few hours, but then 2 fellows left and we could spread out and be comfortable for the remaining several hours. Really a beautiful ride - up and down mountains interspersed by broad agricultural areas, at times some kind of water - river, lake, pond - and in Megalaya a large, rather dry - almost arid - rolling hills area the fellows in Silchar called the plateau (but not, really. Anyway - we're here and settled into the Magnum...

India One More Time

Jan 22, 2014 - Shillong / Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya

December 18, 2013 I stayed in Jowie last night. Hotel Broadway. What a shit holes 400Rs. I should have gave him 200Rs. and called it a day. A small roach tried to keep me company. I did not kill it I just kept pushing it on the floor. After three times I did not see it anymore. There was a hotel a while back where I found a two incher in the shitter. I wanted him to stay there so I fed him a muffin. I did not check to see how much he ate. There was a TV but it didn’t work. I had to get the boy I change the sheet. I got up at 6am and was on...

Jan 22, 2014 - Cherrapunji / Shillong, Meghalaya

December 26, 2013 I am done with it. I haven’t written in some time. I don’t know when was the last time and nor do I care. Spent X-mas in Shillong. Before that I went on a hike with two guys from Luxemburg. Awesome dudes. Very very rare I meet someone with move travelling experience than I. Rene had Several times around India on a Royal Enfield. South Africa, South America and overland from Europe to India all by motorbike. He too has an African Twin and swears by it. Just as Andreas swore by his Twinny. This bike was never imported into...

Jan 22, 2014 - Jowai, Meghalaya

December 17, 2013 Here I am in the middle of nowhere, Suu Kyi is having a bath. 200 Rs. Expensive. I am having chai in the chai stall next door. She’s like me. We both wait until we are filty before getting cleaned. I had a bucket shower this morning too. I love that fucking bucket. I should use it more often. My hair was like straw from dust and sweat not to mention a few burrs and twigs. One thing I should take a picture of is the women on the side of the road making crush gravel for the bed of roadways using a hammer. Breaking big rocks...

Feb 1, 2006 - 2/1/2006

Hello from India, The team is currently in Tezpur, Assam. The journey to Tezpur was 6 hours from Shillong. It took three cars to get everyone and the luggage here. During the last four days we have been in Shillong, Megalaya. On January, 31, we drove to Jonai. Some highlights include visits to hospitals, schools, breakfast with the Archbishop, banks, etc. Everyone is tired at this point and wanting to get some rest. The contrast of this culture are amazing. Our current hosts speak Hindi. In Shillong, they spoke Khasi and in Guwahati, the...

Jan 29, 2006 - 6000 feet up

Hi Everyone, Sara here. Shillong is fabulous and our hosts are amazing, very warm and generous. Karin and I have been up before 6am every morning until yesterday when we slept a little later. We've all spent a little more time together the last couple of days and it's been so fun. Yesterday we toured a small but very impressive call center which according to Don has phone technology that's 5 years out in the states, looked at their IT, and also toured a privately-owned hospital with great technology. Our rotary hosts are wonderful, totally...

Jan 28, 2006 - Safe and Sound in Shiilong the Scotland of the east

All is well in GSE land. We made it to Shiilong yesterday afternoon. It is truly amazing here. This town has been dubbed the Scotland of the East. It also has the honor of being the wettest place on the planet. Luckily we are here during the dry season. We are at a much higher elevation (5000 ft.) It is a little chilly here compared to Guwhati. With no heat and colder temps we will be sleeping with a few more blankets than normal. We are all doing well. Everybody is healthy and happy. I'm ready to head out the door to visit a hospital...

Nov 16, 2004 - Better

Hello, Well I am fully recovered now. And yes, I know, I am trying to be careful!! Believe it or not, it is more difficult than it seems to be sure that things are safe to eat and drink here.... I am doing my best. Given the amount of stuff my stomach has been through during this research project, I am generally pretty immune to most troubles. I still believe it was bad food at the guest house, since it did taste pretty off, and according to my book on travel health, my symptoms were consistent with food poisoning. But the doctor latched...
