Nov 25, 2006 - In Mumbai With Kajal And Deven

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD On Saturday night we said adieu to Rajan and Kusum, and headed out to visit the home of Kajal and Deven Parabu. Kajal is the daughter of Anil's only sister, Manju. They live in the suburb called Bandra - farther north of Mumbai city center - and near to the Domestic and International Airports. We had decided to fly to Delhi (and hour and a half flight) instead of taking the train (sixteen hours if the train is on time). Deven wanted us to spend some time with the two of them as they are avid travellers and he...

Nov 23, 2006 - A Birth Certificate For Anil

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD Anil learned a couple of years ago, from a friend in Edmonton who was born in Palestine, that having a Canadian citizenship card and a valid Canadian passport with his date of birth, was not enough to satisfy the Canada Pension Plan administrators as to his exact date of birth. They insist that those applying for CPP benefits produce a birth certificate from their country of origin. This is not usually a problem for those born in the Western world, but many developing countries did not issue birth certificates...

Nov 17, 2006 - Wedding Party Bus To Lonavla

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD The cars arrived at the Lotus Hotel in the morning and took us to the Shah's residence for a Gujarati breakfast. There were so many guests (60 in all) that the breakfast was served at the base of their building, outdoors. It was a lovely warm morning and the space gave us all room to eat and move around comfortably. Most people opted to ride the bus because we knew it would be more fun to be together, than to ride in separate cars. The very senior members came in the cars as the bus steps would be too hard for...

Aug 8, 2006 - Mumbai, India

We left the Seychelles in the late afternoon, diverted around some thunderstorm activity over the Indian Ocean, and were on our way to Mumbai, which was formerly known as Bombay. It was monsoon season in India and we had only sketchy information about the current weather. The only radio communication in this part of the world is HF radio and it was basically worthless. We were alone out here, over the ocean, at night, flying along in smooth air at 45,000'. Needless to say, it was pouring rain when we landed in Mumbai. The ILS approach was...

Sep 11, 2005 - India Day 1 Mumbai

We are tired, but finally here -our domestic to Sydney was delayed by 2 hrs -after us somehow staying awake all day. Luckily our flight to Mumbai waited ! Hardly slept more than a couple of hours each. The plane experience was actually pretty good, good flims, and the best plane food Ive ever had. Arrived at Mumbai at 6pm, ready for the crazy scene we'd been hearing about.....but it was pretty cool really. Slack customs, easy accomodation & taxi service. Staying in the airport area, for quick escape tomorrow. Hot shower, nice bed, lots of...
