Dec 14, 2018 - Mumbai

The flight from Udaipur was good but the landing in Mumbai was questionable as we seemed to change directions multiple times once we hit the tarmac. We were excited. Security before and after the flight was very heavy and a result of the terrorist attacks a few years ago when hundreds lost their lives. We always felt safe and appreciative of the checking points. The drive to our hotel was slow because of heavy traffic but unlike all other places we've visited horn blowing was minimal and things seemed like 'organised chaos'. Following the...

Apr 7, 2018 - Mumbai (Bombay) India

History: Spread over seven islands, Mumbaii is a major capital of India. Started as a fishing village the region was transformed by the Portuguese then ceded to the British east India company about 100 years later. Bombay as it was known until 1995 is home to the Taj Mahal and Gateway of India. Can’t explain the living conditions barefoot is the shoe of the day, cows, rats and garbage rule the land. After traveling out and about have never taken so many showers in my life. No reason to ever visit this country ever again, view the...

Apr 7, 2018 - Mumbai – Elephanta Caves and Bollywood

Mumbai is the last stop in India. Toady’s tour is the Elephanta Caves, located on an island just off the coast of Mumbai. Actually, Mumbai started out seven islands that have gradually been joined together with landfill projects. Another Portuguese colony until sometime in the 1600’s when the Princess of Portugal married the King of England. Mumbai went to England as part of her dowry. It’s the Banking and Bollywood capital of India. Our guide told us the area where all the big banking skyscrapers are located was once a moat for the fort....

Apr 12, 2017 - Bombay

Last time we came to India, Mumbai was not included in our tour. Perhaps it was too far away from the other places we visited, but I was left with the impression that it was too big, polluted and crazy for Westerners to enjoy. I couldn’t have been more wrong. We loved our tour today; the great guide surely was a contributing factor and we would gladly come back again. Getting here at all was a challenge for our captain. He tip-toed through the murky humidity past vast quantities of commercial ships anchored hither and yon. Mumbai is also a...

Jan 18, 2017 - Back in India - Mumbai

The morning starts with an overly complicated customs process. Wait till your number is called while you panic whether you will get processed before your tour starts. And then only once you have your yellow landing card you have to through 3 police check stops showing the card and passport copy. Finally we meet our guide Samil or Sam. He is a young college student working part time but very knowledgeable and great sense of humour. We start at the Gateway to India. Built by King George V in 1911 to commemorate the visit with his wife Queen...

Jan 17, 2017 - Three days relaxation at Sea

Three days at sea now as we head south toward Mumbai. Interesting that as we pass through the Strait of Hormozgan I get a text welcoming me to the USA. Apparently American warships protect this waterway off the shores of Iran...so I guess I am on their plan. As we are at sea the morning begins in the gym. The gym here is good, lots of machines and space. After our workout and the breakfast buffet it is time to shower, get on the bathing suit and find some loungers up by the Mast Bar where are favourite server Barrington works. It is a...

Feb 11, 2016 - A few days in Bombay

I have to admit, we were dragging our feet a little on the way to Mumbai.. After spending a week lazing on the clean, quiet beaches of Goa, we were reluctant to jump back into the noisy crowds of the big city again! Fortunately, however, Mumbai ended up being a pleasant surprise! First of all, the air quality is much better than Delhi, thanks to the warm breeze off the Arabian Sea. Second, the sidewalks are mostly intact and wide enough to have some room to breathe that relatively fresh air! And last, the city has an interesting modern, yet...

Feb 3, 2015 - "'Mumbai ..a different prospective of India

So as suspected it is a big contrast when we arrive in Mumbai. Even the shanty town areas seem cleaner and are now two stories high. These are the towns sites used in the film Slum Dog Millionaire. The streets are fully paved, there are sidewalks and traffic lights. Tuk-tuks are not allowed in the downtown area and there is an absence of cows, they are few and far between. Of course this is the more cosmopolitan of the two main cities. It seems strange to think that Delhi and Mumbai combined have almost 45M people..more that our whole...

Nov 1, 2014 - Mumbai Nov 1

Our last full day - & what a day it turns out to be! Leaving Udaipur where some of Octopussy and also some of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was filmed. We have left behind the deer park, monkeys, peacocks on the roof and cricket pitch plus practice nets of the Shakbardi Hotel. A horribly early start, 4.15 wake-up call to get the flight to Mumbai. Security at Udaipur Airport is intense - 5 checks, first one just to get into the terminal building, by sullen military personnel. Final security check is done for women by a surly female, rude...
