Jan 6, 2009 - Beach and Lake Resort - Trivandrum

We had a long trip from Canada but arrived in India on Monday January 5 very early in the morning and after a short overnight in a Mumbai hotel flew to Trivandrum in the southern state of Kerala and arrived shortly after noon on Monday. Our specific purpose in coming to Kerala besides the attraction of Kerala as a tourist destination is that Rama Berch, Rosemary's yoga teacher organized a retreat/workshop at an Ayurvedic resort from January 6-16. The resort is located near the city of Trivandrum and is on a sandspit with the Arabian Sea on...

Dec 30, 2008 - room spinning, nauseating

Ok, so I'm not sure how often I will be able to update my journal and hopefully I can add pictures. Because for the first month, I will be at an ashram in Neyyar Dam, India which is in South India almost to the tip. But, here is what I am sure of: 1. I better take a hot shower now, because the ashram has NO hot water. Thank goodness the weather is supposed to be in the 80s. 2. This malaria medicine is making me SICK!!!!! You know that room spinning, nauseating feeling like your gonna throw up sick...kinda like drinking alcohol. But, it is...

Dec 15, 2008 - Trivandrum via Palolem

Another slow rise morning, game of Up and seeing the Brit family off at noon. Walked thru town, got some prices for ON to email Mari...best deal was at Cupid place(same owner as in Palolem) where a single room for multiple nites would be 200 r., and I think that's only because the tourist traffic has dropped dramatically. Some still quoted 600-700 r. and beach huts for 300 r. but who knows when it gets closer to Christmas/New Years?! Had a really fine, relaxing swim...Fatimas is just a short walk across the road from the beach and even tho...

Sep 11, 2007 - Amma - The Hugging Mother

Goooooodie! Time to write about Amma. Amma means Mother in India. I had no intentions of coming to the Hugging Mother's Ashram, however I met a bubbly woman on the plane coming to India who was on her way to visit Amma. We bumped into each other at Darwin where we stopped off on the way. It wasn't so much the words that she said, there was something else that made me feel it would be good to go there. So I decided some time later to visit. To learn about the hugging mother go to http://www.amma.org/ The day I arrived, Amma was just about to...

Jan 12, 2007 - Varkala ... Dodging the wannabe beach mystics

We were pointed to the waiting, mostly full cars at the front of the train by a railway attendant. As expected, we were travelling without a reserved seat. We pressed our way onto the train, hoisted our bags into an overhead rack, and wedged ourselves into a spot in the aisle as more and more people entered to fill the carriage. Seats, luggage racks, and aisles were full of people. They stared at us for a while -- being the only tourists on the train car -- but seemed to get bored of us eventually. I stood in the midst of everything I'd...

Jan 10, 2007 - Our first days in India

Matt: Everything is a mad rush, a hurry to get somewhere other than where you are, and shyness or manners simply means you wait at the end of the line for whatever is left over after the crowd is gone. Of course, we knew this before coming to India. The clamour to exit the plane at Trivandrum (steward yelling at them the whole time) and the chaos of the luggage claim area just confirmed it. We elbowed our way to the front and waited for our bags. Next we changed some money, bought a voucher for a taxi (maybe avoiding some of the...

Nov 2, 2006 - Varkala

Woohoo...finally found a place in India where it is nearly like paradise. Varkala is a little beach town which sits on a cliff face overlooking the sea. Each day is spent waking up in our little beach huts, making our way to the beach, having a fresh pineapple cut up in front of you for lunch, swimming, sunbaking, reading a book and then finding some fresh fish and a cold beer at a number of restaurants along the cliff face. I even got involved in a game of beach cricket which ended up being a game of India vs The Rest of the World team...

Mar 17, 2006 - Varkala!

Well, as predicited the beach healed all..a few days of sun, sand, waves, delicious fresh seafood and fun new traveler friends and I am back in the swing of things! I have been calling Varkala "India Light" as it was not India as we had come to know it. No Rickshaws, fumes, traffic..no staring, glaring men, no cows, no hassles. While not a full blown beach resort..yet...it is a travelers mecca with endless cheap accomadation, food, clothes, internet, massages, fellow backpackers and the breath taking views were free! So we settled in,...

Come Away With Me...

Mar 13, 2006 - India - Touching down in Trivandrum and Cochin

Luna's Log: After all the stories about how intense India can be in every way you can imagine, we couldn't have asked for a better introduction than our visit to Trivandrum. We were pretty beat on arrival, having had a stopover for several hours through Bangkok (mmm...my old friend, sticky rice and mangoes) then an over-nighter in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Upon entering town we were greeted by streets lined with thousands of women who had made the journey to celebrate a festival for the Goddess Devi. Each woman had a personal altar setup in...
