Jan 7, 2011 - Leaving Kochi

I am leaving this hot roach infested place tonight. I am taking a night bus to Mysore. It is about a 12 hour ride. I did not dislike Kochi, but I think it is maybe over-billed. It is a very hot very dirty, very infested place with a lot of tourists and also very expensive. I am looking forward to Mysore. I hear it is much cooler there. So I forgot to tell you guys about my Ayurvedic message that I got in Varkala. It was more like being rubbed down with oil than an actual massage, but it only cost about $12 for an hour. I had to get buck...

Kia Shnette 2010

Jan 4, 2011 - Kochi

So I am now in Kochi staying at hotel something or other on Shanmugan Rd (above the Ela restaurent). Kochi is pretty cool so far. It is hot and humid still, but it is built partially on the mainland and also on about 15 islands so it is very spread out and lots of water. I was in a bakery shop yesterday that happened to have left the door to the back open and I saw the dead carcasses of about a dozen giant cockroaches. I defintely will not be eating anything in that bakery. It has actually made me nervous about eating anything here. The...

Kia Shnette 2010

Jan 3, 2010 - Kochi

We were a bit worried about getting out of Delhi as there were serious fog issues. But as it was, our flight out was only delayed by 1 hour. That was probably a good thing because just getting through check in was an experience. We lined up behind a bunch of Russians who were checking in. Once they were done, the man behind the counter just walked away, never to be seen again. After waiting patiently for a while we ended up adopting the Indian way of doing things - we just pushed in front of people in another queue and got our boarding...

Incredible India

Nov 10, 2009 - Kochi

A speedy hello from Kochi, Kerala, God's Own Country as they say in the advertisements. We have been drenched since we arrived this morning - the monsoon seems to think it needs to introduce itself to us, although we are way past the normal monsoon season. So today we've been catching up on sleep after an interesting introduction to the sleeper class of Indian trains. Our beds were high up and it felt a bit like sleeping on a hat rack (at first we weren't sure whether it was a bed or somewhere to store our luggage but it soon became...

Nov 3, 2009 - Planning Ahead.... F#$@% T@#$

FER: Planning ahead is crucial, especially when you're arriving in a place where you don't speak the native language. We'd planned to arrive in Kochi this morning at around 7:00am. I don't know, grab breakfast go to the internet find a place to stay and take it from there. HOWEVER, the train pulled in at no less than 4:00am and it threw a curve in our plans, to say the least. It was dark outside, NO IDEA WHERE WE WERE or where to go and ofcourse EVERYTHING was closed. We'd heard of an area full of tourist and hired a taxi who drove us and...

Jun 23, 2009 - Keral-Ahhh!! (text only)

Sunday, June 21, 2009 What a beautiful relief to arrive in Kerala! What a sublime jewel of a state, green, lush, fertile and, most wonderfully for me, laidback. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon when I landed at Kochi airport, and the bags came through pretty quickly. Green green green was all I could see from the plane as I landed (well, through the humid air, that is), and I fell for the place immediately. I arranged for a pre-paid taxi from the airport immediately, and bought a Kerala SIM card for my phone - always handy. I wound down...

Feb 22, 2009 - Beautiful Fort Kochin

We arrived in Fort Kochin at four in the morning and were expecting to sit in the lounge of our Home Stay untill the sun was up and we were able to explore the city...We had phoned the previous day and our hosts were so friendly and said that we could leave our bags there and check in at noon... But by some miracle, a room opened and we were able to go straight to our little garden home and take a loooooong nap, recovering from the train journey across the country! We were even woken up for a delicious breakfast on the rooftop! Fort Kochin...

The Elstons Go East

Dec 16, 2008 - Travelling to Kochi

Today, we were resigned to a full day of travelling. We needed to get back to Delhi to catch our flight to Kochi, Kerula in the south of India. The journey back to Delhi was about 6-7 hours and our flight was at 5:30pm. We decided that in order to guarantee our arrival in Delhi, we needed yet another early start! So up again at 6am so that we could leave by 7am. The driver was waiting for us and he, and the car, immediately seemed better than the chap that had driven us from Delhi. So we left as planned and within 10 minutes the car started...

Apr 20, 2008 - Cochin, actually Kochi

Here i am back at the computer desk of the Hotel Arches, Cochin. it is now 7.20 am, and the sounds are of hotel workers sweeping the floor, plates and cutlery rattling and tinkling in the breakfast room above, voices dialoging in incomprehensible language below, and outside, birds squawking. our room has a small balcony, and from it i have been watching th early morning goings-on. mostly pigeons on rooftops, people on foot, bicycle or motor bike. i haven't seen a car go by, but inevitably as i say that i hear a car horn, a single car horn....

a Journey with Jen

Mar 7, 2008 - Kochi (Kerala)

Feb 22, 2008 - Winter Break in Kerala and Tamil Nadu

Matt and I spent three weeks in South India. Here are some of the places and activities we enjoyed: Walking around the old part of Kochi(Kerala), watching fishermen use the ancient Chinese fishing nets, eating seafood, coconut milk curries, and dosas Staying near the tea plantations in hilly Munnar(Kerala). It was a magical place! We walked around tea plantations one evening at sunset. Tea fields look so manicured with neat little bushes evenly spaced. It was rainy and misty while we were there. We did tour a tea factory and learned a...
