India 2009/2010

Jun 18, 2009 - Sravanabelagola

Today we traveled to some ancient ruins 2300 and 1000 years old respectively. The trip to the ruins itself was an experience. We experienced the rural lifestyle in India, a major desire for the trip. The ruins were breathtaking and were the exact type of environment we wanted to experience. The steps on the way to the top were carved directly into the mountain; unbelievable considering the site was built 1000 years ago with primitive tools. After reaching the top and looking at the statues, a priest blessed us with a "pooja".

I Love India 2009

Jun 17, 2009 - Bangalore

Today we visited some more of Bangalore and in beautiful weather; 25 degress with sun. Our host provided phenominal meals and even went so far as to pack us sandwiches and snacks for the daytrip. We prayed in certain temples and felt a sense of belonging, regardless of the mutiple differences between us and the citizens. The contrast between the art work which we saw in Paris and in the Palaces in India is huge and lead us to appriate both even more. And so, tomorrow we leave to Mysore and try to book our first non resevred hotel.

I Love India 2009

Jun 16, 2009 - High Court of Karnataka at Bangalore

Route: Chennai - Sriperumbadur - Vellore - Hasur - Bangalore Distance covered: 334 Kms. Place of Stay on 15.06.2009 and 16.06.2009: Bowring Institute, 19 St. Mark's Road Bangalore, the city of Gardens, was our next destination. Lot of childhood memories are associated with this city as I studied here for one year when I was doing my class 8. But Bangalore then and now is completely different. Bangalore with beautiful weather throughout the year and greenery all around was undoubtedly the most beautiful city of India. But, today it is like...

Feb 13, 2009 - 'Jolly Days' in Bangalore

Only practical way to get from Hampi down to Kerala, was to go via Bangalore again. With the company of another girl, Emily, who I am travelling to Cochin with, we made it our mission to enjoy the day. Second time round in Bangalore and having been in India a little while now I am ready to face the chaos again, and this time round really appreciated and enjoyed spending a day here. Spent a morning jst walking round the city, breathing in the smoke and smog. We fancied the idea of reading the newspaper in the park, so set off for about 2km...

Indonesia and India

Jan 18, 2009 - Bangalore

On the steps of our hotel the decision 'to go' meant that altho everyone said it was only half hour up half hour back we actually committed to 3 hours more in this distinctly 'Build it and they will come' classical example of religious, over the top commercialism. But boy does it bring in the $$$$$$$$$ in huge wads in huge # of ways...every other establishment is either a hotel/residency/lodge or a place serving food & other goods (puja etc) for the travellers who mass here. There is a totally independent state bus service just to shuttle...

Jan 8, 2009 - An alarm call Bangalore style.

Had arranged for an alarm call at 3.45am with reception or so I thought. The receptionist also gave me a big hint or rather told me that a tip would be expected for the bell boys AND him. What a joker! I had to laugh to myself, as up until the last, the word tip, had followed me. As always I had actually thought for myself that the guy carrying my bags should get a tip but wasn't thinking the receptionist should and in fact most backpackers don't tip at all as a matter of course. Maybe the receptionist thought I must be some kind of...

Jan 7, 2009 - A wee taster of India - Bangalore!

Well I finally made it to the land of the curry and I am sure many other things beside:)) In one day, however, it was hard to get a real feel for India apart from the people have to be the most friendly and helpful that I had met anywhere on my travels. Strangely no-one had mentioned this side of this vast nation. Mostly I had been told about the food, the abject poverty and the not so fresh smells drifting through the streets. I have to say that even being here only one day that I discovered that there is much much more to this place than...

Aug 17, 2008 - INDIA - Once Again

After the fun of camping in the Thar desert we continued on our Southwesterly course to the city of Ahmedabad, which only days earlier, had been rocked by a series of bombs which had been planted on bicycles in the residential areas by 'SIMI' terrorists. Oh to be back in the territory of massive spiders. Luckily our time in Ahmedabad went off without a hitch and we even managed to take in the 'Ashram' used by Mahatma Gandhi and a few of his close followers. An Ashram is a complex that seems to be dedicated to learning, in this case Gandhi...

Aug 8, 2008 - Bored in Bangalore

We ended up riding reserve class from Mysore to Bangalore. Our guidebook told us that the trip would only take two hours, so we went with the cheapest option possible. We thought we could endure pretty much anything… for a two-hour period. Unreserved means hard, wooden bench seating without assigned seats, without air conditioning, and without bathrooms. The tickets were dirt-cheap. So cheap, in fact, that any addition manpower beyond the conductor would probably must result in a loss of money for the railroad. This explains why there was...

Apr 24, 2008 - Bangalore

"A guest never forgets the host who had treated him kindly." - Homer another early start today, but also the pre-breakfast window in time to update my journal was satisfying. Our mission - to drive from Mysore to Bangalore. the trip went fairly smoothly, unlike the hair-raisinng journeys we experienced in and out of wonderful marvellous mountain town Ooty, but more on that at another time. our journey could not be complete without a toilet stop, and this one yielded yet another indian style toilet, and a shopping opportunity. Excess baggage...
