Hotel guy arranged a taxi to take us to train at 6 am since there are no autorickshaws running at this early morning hour. Train arr. at 7:15 and after 2-3 minutes the crowd waiting jams on board and away we go! Thru countryside of agric(rice, etc.), see several what I take to be refugee camps(plastic tarp, tents, or just cloth over sticks) - Tibetian? - thru mtn. areas w/ poplar, pine(rust color needles on many - diseased?), bamboo...strange combo of trees. Many small villages, lots of passengers on & off, seats always filled w/ few...

Aug 5, 2006 - Naggar

From the Spiti valley, we headed back down to Manali then travelling down the Kullu valley on the way to Shimla we stopped at a small village called Naggar. Still up in the mountains near Manali, it was peaceful and v green - esp after the Spiti and pin valleys! less exciting but relaxing, we had our very own room in an old wooden castle(!), did calming mountain forest walks, visited a nearby village with ancient wooden temples, staring locals and mad kids where we also stumbled across a very incongruous volleyball match (see above!)
