Oct 11, 2006 - On our way to Joybells (Dehradun) - currently in Manali

We have now begun to leave the heart of the Himalayas behind and have made it back to Manali. We traveled 90% of the way across the Himalayas to Leh, and are now on our way out again. On our way north we went from Delhi to Chandigarh by train before driving to Mandi. Then we drove the rest of the way with stops in Manali, Jispa, Sarchu, and finally Leh. On our way to Dehradun we've left Tso Moriri (the lake near the valley where the nomadics camp - we'll explain more in a moment) to Pang (a simple gathering of tents), to Jispa, to Manali....

Sep 14, 2005 - Leaving Ladakh

View the map for this story It has been a while since we last emailed and much has happened. Before our trek across Rupshu we decided that it was time that we moved on from Ladakh. There are few options for leaving, flying or taking the bus to either Manali or Srinagar are the main choices. Flying wasn't really an option as there are few flights and they were all booked up until mid September and it was not yet August. Dec 8, 2004 - Our first view of the Himalayas

We had arranged fora car to take us from Amritsar to Himachel Pradesh today. We left a little later than planned as there was a problem with the first car, but fianlly we got underway and bid th Punjab goodbye. The countryside was pretty flat and green for several hours but finally in the distance the mountains of the Himalayas! Its the first time I've seen them - I think its the last great mountain range for me after the Rockies, Andes and Alps.
