Nov 23, 2010 - Back to Delhi

Getting ready to fly back to Delhi today and meet up with my parents and my uncle and aunt (chacha and chachi). I have to cram all the shopping I did into one suitcase and mentally prepare myself for the pat down at the airport. Rained all night and it's a beautiful morning. Breezy and sunny - everything seems so much cleaner here after it rains. Chinku and I went to the Siddh Temple this morning - it's famous for this area. No shoes allowed and my feet are now permanently black - rain can be a problem if you have to walk the streets...

India 2010

Nov 19, 2008 - Kurukshetra

Since the narrow gauge train leaves at 8 we get going by 7 and even tho the guy at the desk at the Y had promised the nite before we could order brkfs early so as to be able to eat and leave by 7:15 (it's a 20-30 min walk down to the train), he failed and covered by saying he had not promised this, only that he would have our brkfst by 7:15! We left w/o, Mari lingered to try getting some $$ back to no avail. Since the train is supposed to take 4-5 hours to go 97 km to Kalka (end of the narrow gauge line) we will have 3+ hrs to spend there....

Aug 24, 2008 - On the move again...

So off I go! After a wonderful time in Mussoorie, it's time for me to move on. To be totally honest i'm quite sad to be leaving; but i'm trusting in Him that He will continue to guide my path and there are many new experiences for me to come on this Indian adventure! :) Please ask Him that He will watch over me as i travel- i'm a little nervous as it's the first time i'll be trying out the Indian bus services! Amazingingly someone from the hospital is going half of the way so i can grab a freebie lift from him! :) I don't know what the...

Feb 5, 2007 - Agra and Delhi

My last stop with Bhojraj, after our tour of Rajasthan, was Agra. Agra itself didn't seem to have much to recommend it, but everyone visits there since it is home to the Taj Mahal. I woke up early and got to the Taj so I could see it at sunrise. It was spectacular and I took a zillion pictures, but I just chose a small selection to post here. The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum, completed in 1653. I had high expectations, but they were all exceeded when I arrived. The monument was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial for his...

Nov 7, 2006 - Off to Rishikesh

Okay, I'm off to Rishikesh for a little 3 day hop. I'll be going to the Ganges River and some other places, but I forgot their names. Hopefully, I will learn where I went and report back. Another note about Nepal. There are so many things that I fail to mention that I almost feel bad about having people read these entries. I guess I'm getting a bit senile in my old age; it happens. Anyway, I forgot to mention that I went on a whitewater rafting trip. Well, I wouldn't consider it the rapids (we only hit one small area where it was a class...

Nov 7, 2006 - Final thoughts on Nepal, and initial thoughts on India

Looking back at my Nepal trip, I must say that I had an amazing time. The food (Dal Baht), people and scenery were all great. I'll have to say that I was a bit annoyed at all the pushy salepeople, and the constant markup (foreign prices) and haggling involved with everything. I really didn't want to have to negotiate for everything since the prices were so low anyway, but it's the principle. Get quoted one price, and then another comes up later. I guess, if you like that kind of thing, it's fun. I must say that the most memorable thing,...

Oct 23, 2006 - Here we goa, here we goa, here we goa!!!

So our trip round North India is complete and Jodie and I are preparing (rather excitedly) for our flight to Goa tomorrow morning! Today we drove back from Jaipur and arrived back in Delhi for one final night of craziness... Rajhistan was quite an experience, we watched Diwali from the roof of our hotel (with the crazy Indian hotel manager who befriended us immediately) and marveled at the sheer chaos of India celebrating with fireworks... Somehow I don't think the Hale and Pace adverts on firework safety have been aired in the fair...

May 17, 2006 - Dehli - one more time

By the time we arrived into Dehli for our final night in India, we had it down. We must have even had a new look about us, because we could move about without being harassed. We flagged down tuk tuk drivers with ease and didn't even have to haggle, as the drivers could sense we had been thru the rigmarole before. Tommy met a young accomplished Indian journalist for a couple of drinks to talk about the tigers, while I explored a bit on my own. I saw Dehli in a new light. No longer was I intimidated by the masses and the city. It was a much...

Mar 2, 2006 - getting a move on

I know journal entries have been sparse-I apologize completely but the problem is that I am just having far too much fun and too many experiences to find alot of time for updates! Moreover I am starting my two weeks in Ashram tommorow and will not be electronically connected, so don't worry, I have not been eaten by hungry tigers(at least probably not), and I promise to write some nice long updates and post some photos when I get back to Delhi. I had been in asia so long that it had started to make sense to me. I had started tuning out the...

Feb 11, 2006 - So long India!

Since I will be leaving Delhi tomorrow evening to return home (arriving Chicago early Sunday morning), I am not sure if I will be making another entry from India. All in all, it's been such a challenge to put this experience into words, because of all of the emotions that India brings out. I certainly have so many new insights on poverty, cleanliness, bribery, corruption, bureaucracy, money, survival, animals, diversity, world religions, happiness, patience, disease, health, and so on... I hope to share my pictures with all of you and to...

Feb 3, 2006 - Shrines, Temples & Mosques

Today we slept late and got ready to meet our 12 new travel buddies for the next 10 days. We were both so excited because our China group was fantastic. I must say, Val & I were slightly disappointed that we were both the youngest people and that the trip was composed of a more sedate group, but we have each other and will make the best of it. After a brief meeting we set out for Jami Masjid, the Muslim temple in Old Delhi. Up until this point we'd only been in "new" Delhi, so we thought Old would mean more calm. HA! The next hour spent...
