Mar 30, 2007 - Cooking in Ahmedabad

Imagine a massive hairdryer the size of a house with an ultrahot fry-your-hair-fast setting. You turn it on and stand in front of it, the wind drying your skin. The heat of it makes it difficult to walk, to move. That is Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad is easily the hottest place we've been so far, hotter than any place I've been before. The autorickshaw driver tells us it is 44 degrees as we drive to our hotel. And we thought Udaipur was hot! We check in to our hotel to discover that the only room available (at least until another room checks out)...

Jan 25, 2007 - Ahmedabad

Hello, Ahmedabad was a bit of a disappointment unfortunately. It's a large city, over 4 million people, and it was dirty, chaotic, noisy and extremely hard to navigate. I was glad I had planned it out so that I was only spending one day there before taking the train to Udaipur. I spent most of the morning looking for a store that sold the handicrafts made by the women of SEWA (the self-employed women's organisation). I try to make a point of buying from organizations that are assisting women and children in some way or directly from women....

Eileen's Grand Tour

Dec 8, 2006 - Mumbai and Ahmadabad

G'day all, We left Mumbai by train and arrived late in the evening in Ahmedabad in Gujarat Province. This area was affected by a devastating earthquake in 2001 and riots across the province the year after. Although only a small city compared to most (4.5million), it is chokingly polluted and we have both suffered as a result!! In the morning we went to visit Gandhiji's famous Ashram (Sabarmati Ashram) down by the river. It was very serene, clean and peaceful even though it is in the city area. This is Gandhi's old headquarters where he...

Get It INDIA!

Jun 2, 2006 - Gandhi's Ashram

So we hung out in Mumbai for a while and then decided to travel north to Jaisalmer. We plan to arrive there around the 8th to go on a desert trek on camels. We met people in Mumbai Ed and Lucy who we are going to go trekking with. I reckon you need a few people to give it that campfirey camping feel. Headed in the general direction of Jaisalmer we went to Ahmedabad for a day and a bit. Ahmedabad is in Gujarat and VERY different to Mumbai where we were. You don't get hassled as its not very touristed so people just chat to you with out...

Apr 4, 2006 - Chillin' in Ahmedabad

After recovering from our road trip, we spent a relaxing weekend taking in the sights of Ahmedabad. On Saturday, we checked out a few of the step wells in town. These wells were built hundreds of years ago as an alternative to the typical deep shaft and bucket combination. The first well we visited, the Dada Hari Wav, was built in 1499. There are seven levels of steps that take you down to the bottom of the well. Each level has ornately carved sandstone designs. In years past, the water would rise so high during the monsoon season that you...

Gregg in India

Mar 20, 2006 - Ahmedabad - our first day

Highlights of my first 24 hours in Ahmedabad: • Our outdoor work session at IIM was interrupted when a monkey on a branch 20 feet from our table started to pee down towards us. At first, we just huddled in closer under our table's umbrella. When crap started to drop from the sky, we moved inside. • We saw a camel pulling a cart down the street this afternoon. • We have a budget from the University of $50/person for food each day. Today, we spent about $3/person. This includes snacks, fresh juices, bottled water, and meals. • I think the...

Jan 29, 2006 - To Ahmedabad

We were up at 6.30 and we walked off to the German Bakery for breakfast. We packed the final things and loaded up into the motor rickshaws to the bus station which are identical all over the world. John was sick this morning and before we took off Candice arranged a car to come and it would drive them to Ahmedabad when John was up to it. Jennifer said that John thought it might have been some water he bought with a dodgy top. We all bundled into the bus and had a boring trip along the main road to Ahmedabad which was broken by a bus stop...

Nov 12, 2004 - Onwards to Gujurat

Today we made our way with Jay and Jetna to Anand in Gujerat wehre we will visit with Jetna's uncle and visit some of the sites. We had a pleasant train ride, but it became quite hot in the carriage as the day wore on. Again, thank god for the fans. We passed village after village, farmland, occasional hillls, the clacking of the tracks, train whistles - all in a blur. Jay and I joked and drank masala chai most of the way. About mid-afternoon we arrived in Anand, close to Jay's family's 'plot' as he puts it and a favourite uncle who goes by...
