Dec 2, 2017 - Varanasi

We are sitting on the roof of our hotel, the Sita Guest House, in Varanasi, overlooking the Ganges, which has been turned into a rooftop restaurant. We've just attempted to catch an hour or so of sleep, which eluded me, after our overnight flight from Goa. I had booked us for a mid day flight, but the airline discontinued that one, and put us on one that left at midnight from Goa to Delhi, for 3 1/2 hours, with a 5 1/2 hour layover until 8 am this morning, then another 1 1/2 hours to Varanasi. Thank goodness I had arranged for a car to pick...

Dec 1, 2017 - Good-bye Goa

We haven't heard from Sheeja in a couple of days, and then got word from Sharon and Babu that flooding was occurring around his home near Neyyar Dam, 25 minutes from her place. Today's newspaper says a cyclone is hitting southern Kerala where we were, and in Kannyakumari people are being evacuated by the army, navy, and Air Force. 3,000 power poles have been toppled and 500 trees uprooted. 8 people killed, 4 in Kerala, and 4 in Kannyakumari which is in Tamil Nadu state. I sure hope the house we bought holds up for Sheeja, who has her...

Nov 29, 2017 - Anjuna Hippy Market

Jud went out carousing in Baga until 5:30 a.m. So happy he has his own space so we didn't know enough to worry about him. He had a great time checking out clubs and bars, meeting people, and getting free drinks at some, as the bouncers thought he was with a group, and had paid a cover fee (which was not the case). Two guys gave him a ride back to the hotel on the back of their scooter. He said it was one of the weirdest experiences in his life, as he'd never ridden with two guys before, but they said, "Not to worry sir, this is everyday...

Nov 28, 2017 - Baga, Goa

Another hot 30degree day, that feels like 38 according to the weather network. After breakfast we decided to walk the 20 minutes to the town of Baga and check out the beach, shops, and exchange some money for Rupees. Cool drinks, some haggling over t-shirts and jewelry, and we took a taxi back with 10 foil packets of port (Goa was settled by the Portuguese, hence the port) and some local cashew feni (moonshine made from cashews). After lunch some cooling off time by the pool, reading, writing, and playing pool on the small lobby table....

Nov 27, 2017 - Royal Goan Resort Monterio

We're staying in a condo RCI timeshare complex, near Calungate, north of Arpura, south of Baga. Older worn furniture, Indian style, but a great bed that allowed us our best sleep in two weeks. They apparently upgraded us to an imperial suite, which in fact means that we have an enhanced sound system for the TV. Too bad we have to climb 8 sets of stairs to reach our room. Refreshed, but ravenous, after a disastrous room service experience last night (cold chicken burgers, limp fries, and shrimp drowned in sandwich spread sauce), we decided...

Nov 26, 2017 - Goa

Up at 5:30 this am and served a 7 course breakfast from Sheeja. Some tears amid the good-byes. Arrived at 6 pm in Goa, after all day travel, leaving at 7:10 am from Sheeja's house. Drive for an hour to the Trivandrum airport, wait an hour, a 2 1/2 hour flight on Indigo Airlines to Mumbai, a 3 1/2 hour layover to pick up luggage and go through security to Spice Jet airlines, a 1 1/4 hour flight to Goa. Then a 1 1/4 hour car ride to our hotel/condo in northern Goa near Baga and Arpura. Will check out the area tomorrow, and indulging in...

Jun 10, 2017 - Tranquillity in South Goa, Agonda Beach.

Tranquillity in South Goa, Agonda Beach. Agonda is a small village in Canacona, South Goa. Agonda Beach is a great spot for relaxing, swimming and sunbathing with still relatively few tourists. Its is a nice long pristine 2km stretch of beach. It is definitely the best for people who want to be in a calm environment away from the hustle of the North Goa Beaches like Baga and Calangute. Theres no Loud Music and No Clubs and few tourists as compared to other beaches which makes it a perfect travellers spot. A Perfect Getaway The Beautiful...

Apr 30, 2017 - leaving goa

I'm writing from a cab with a/c. Friggin amazing. Yesterday a couple of us ventured to the end of the beach to try to get to monkey island and butterfly beach... There's no monkey or butterflies there . There are people selling boat rides over there but we were able to walk across the river part between the two and just held our bags over our heads. It was cool over there.. it was pretty rocky.. I cut my foot on a rock :(. I've been keeping it super clean and with polysporin and then a dressing and a tensor wrap over top, and then a sock...

Apr 28, 2017 - Honk honk

Yesterday we rented motorbikes for the day and drove up to Arambol beach. We were told there was surfing up there but we didnt come across any. We spent the day on the beach and walking thru the market there. The motorbikes were an experience. Aylish drove and I rode the back...for some reason I was completely calm during the whole experience. Aylish took to it like a pro. There are signs every once in a while pointing in the direction of where to go but we relied mostly on slowing down, asking someone ome on the street and they would just...

Apr 28, 2017 - palolem among others

We got here and had an amazing day on the beach. We walked down and explored. . It's a little more rocky so you have to climb and work a little for the view but it was nice. The three of us got to the end of the most deserted Peninsula of the beach, had a smoke and talked about our favorite animals. We came back and a girl spotted my Canadian passport. I hadn't met any canadians until today. On the beach today I heard a guy say " "hold on I gotta make some change and buy some darts" ...turns out he was from Ottawa Valley. We had a delish...

Apr 26, 2017 - getting started

HELLO! I'm writing from my top bunk (terrible choice in hindsight) at our hostel in a town called Anjuna in Northern Goa. It's just about midnight and it's 28°c. All attempts at not smelling bad and not frizzy hair are pointless haha.. I took beckys advice and quickly set this journal up on my phone. Hope u enjoy :) My trip over was good but as I boarded the final flight with Air India and going on hour 30 or so of traveling I was excited for that part to be done. Aylish flew over a week before me.. she spent some time in Mumbai but was...

Apr 11, 2017 - Goa

In our youth Goa was a place rich, disaffected kids went to tune in, drop out, make love, seek enlightenment. For me California might have been on the other side of the moon, much less Goa. And now we are actually here, long after all the hippies have moved on. Our guide told us that Nigerians and Russians have moved in, bringing prostitution, drug crime and corruption. We saw no evidence of this, but have to assume that she knew what she was talking about. More recently we have heard about spectacular beaches here. I love a beach as much...
