Nov 3, 2019 - Delhi With Family

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD We arrived in Delhi after the overnight flight from Zagreb through Dubai, only to land in the most polluted city in the world. The pollution is always bad during the winter months because the farmers in the Punjab region continue to burn the stubble off their fields in order to prepare the soil for the coming planting season. The government has banned the burning in an attempt to reduce the smoke in the air, and the fines are steep. However, the farmers say it is cheaper to pay the fine than to absorb the cost of...

India 2019

Oct 20, 2019 - Delhi Old and New

Woke early as in previous blog to write a formal complaint email and to bring blog up to date. It is 18:40 now and as we sit on our balcony overlooking the pool and a darkening sky, we see hundreds of fruit bats heading towards their nightly feast. It is such a strange sight in this urban city. We sit here exhausted not from the walking but the constant bombardment of noise, lots of noise, colours, sights and smells, lots of smells, some not so good. We could spend hours on the corner of the old market place and see the people in action....

Oct 19, 2019 - Back to Delhi

Early to breakfast and as were were aware that our next flight was from a small regional airport we had some sever limitations on our baggage weight. This caused concern with all the additionally gifts we are considerably over the total 70kg for the four of us. The solution was to send the additional gifts and clothes back via one of Colin’s containers. So a cricket bat bag was duly dispatched from Colin’s manufacturers and we filled the bag to sent back to UK in next four weeks. Arvin arrived at our hotel to take to us out to an Indian...

Jul 24, 2019 - The Taj at sunrise, a morning of leisure and then back to Delhi

It was an early morning wake up call this morning. We were scheduled to meet our driver at 5:45 a.m. to get to the Taj Mahal prior to opening (we were about 5 minutes drive away). I'm going to blame the fact that it was so early in the morning and my brain wasn't yet functioning for the fact that I headed to one of the most photogenic sights in the world without my Canon T7i! Left is sitting in the room, fully charged, lots of space on the SD card...and no place to go!!! Aaaarrrgggghhhhh!!!!! Thankfully, cell phone cameras have improved...

Our India Adventure

Jul 10, 2019 - A Day of Travel

This was one extremely tiring day of travel. We woke up 5:15 a.m. in order to get to the airport in order to make our Air India flight to Delhi. It was an extremely long flight, with two full meals and a snack being served. We arrived in Delhi just before midnight. The Delhi airport was quite modern and blissfully air-conditioned, which made the transition to 45 degree celsius temperature that much more of a shock. Traffic was insane. In bed by 2:00 a.m.

Our India Adventure

Dec 3, 2018 - Delhi

It was certainly an abrupt change of scenery, temperatures, noise and smells when we arrived in India after our time in Europe but we were ready for the final leg of our travel year. Our drinking partners from home, John and Gayle, had also arrived so it was all systems go. A rickshaw ride through the narrow lanes of Old Delhi, once the capital of Islamic India, was exhilarating if not a little scary . Spice markets and shops of every kind crammed the minimal space. New Delhi, created by the British Raj, had tree lined avenues and grand...

Nov 29, 2018 - Living Large at the Leela

Days 14, 15 & 16 Living Large at the Leela When we booked this trip, I had a funny feeling that we might be sufficiently overwhelmed at the end of two weeks. We declined an option through Brand g to go on with them for a couple of days to visit the spiritual city of Varanasi and decided to end our trip with a couple of decompression days at a hotel in Delhi. We chose the Leela Palace in the Diplomatic Enclave part of the city mostly based on location. Turned out to be just what we needed to relax without a set schedule every day. The Leela...

Nov 8, 2018 - “Your Happy is My Happy”

Day 2 in New Delhi NOTE: Having much difficulty with iternet on the boat so will try sending pictures a different way. We may have to resend with photos later. “Your Happy is My Happy” Today was New Delhi tour day. The smog was noticeably improved and the cool and comfortable weather was a good match for being out and about all day. Our local guide, Ravi, was a font of knowledge, and even though we missed about a third of what he said, the parts we did understand were fascinating. First stop was the incredible Humayun’s Tomb, a 16th century...

Nov 6, 2018 - The Scam Artist

Day 1 in New Delhi The Scam Artist We arrived safely in Delhi on an early morning flight from Dubai with smog as thick as San Francisco fog. It didn’t take me long to figure out that the burnt smell that assaulted our senses was not the Welcome to India Barbecue like I initially thought. Childhood memories of burning sugar cane fields filled my head, but the gray skies and air heavy enough to taste let me know that I wasn’t in Louisiana any more. The driver got us to the hotel in one piece if you don’t count the emotional damage. Fluid...
