Jan 10, 2011 - The wonders & traffic terror of Hyderabad

Sunday, January 9, 2011, Hyderabad Up early and over to the gym. Ravi was there and I asked if FES had arranged to get yoga mats. He promised to look into it. At breakfast Ayari and Anna said they were joining friends who had rented a van to see some of the Hyderabad sites. They had extra space so Lynn and I joined them, out again into the crazy traffic. We had an accident on the way to Golkonda Fort. Our driver rear-ended a car. Lynn was sitting in the front seat and was thrown to the front of the van. Luckily she wasn't seriously small...

Jan 7, 2011 - IFRI meeting day 1

January 7, 2011, Hyderabad, India 9:30 pm, 17 C, partly cloudy Woke up at 5:30 this morning to prayers. Tried to go back to sleep, but no such luck. Got up and went to the gym for half-hour on the treadmill and elliptical. No time for weights. Had to get ready for taxi I ordered for 7:45 a.m. to take me to the International Forest Resources and Institutions meeting at the Hotel Boutique Amogh. It wasn't a taxi that came but a volunteer driver with Foundation for Ecological Security, the conference organizers. They're taking good care of...

Jan 6, 2011 - The Day of the Body

6 January 2011, Hyderabad 25 C at noon, sunny I'm calling this the Day of the Body because of the physical experiences I've had today. I started out by asking about yoga, but the session had already started at 6:30 am. Rajiv, one of the conference organizers from the Foundation for Ecological Security, showed me where the yoga class is being held and said they were going to arrange to have yoga mats available. Rajiv was heading to the exercise room, so I walked over with him. The gym is well equipped with weight machines, exercise bikes,...

Jan 6, 2011 - First day in Hyderabad

Jan 6, 2011 Hyderabad, India Slowly getting used to this awkward IPAD keyboard... It's 5:30 am. Awakened by prayers broadcasting over speakers. Went to sleep by them yesterday morning, so I'm slowly re-adjusting to the time zone change. Had a half-hour nap yesterday afternoon and then went to sleep before 6 pm. I hope the almost 12 hours of sleep makes me feel normal again. It was a beautiful day yesterday, sunny and warm, low to mid 20s. I had to rub my eyes when I saw the bougainvillea and morning glories in bloom. Took a tour around the...

Jan 5, 2011 - Safe and sound in Hyderabad

Arrived safely in Hyderabad at 4:30 am to 18 degree weather. Had arranged a taxi, but no one at airport to pick me up. Budget guy arranged a ride. Made it to the Institute by 5:45. Have a clean double room. Slept for a few hours--felt so good to stretch out on a bed, even if it is a little hard. Sitting with Int'l Assoc for the Study of the Commons organizers, including friends from Mexico who organized the IASC confirm in Oaxaca in 2007. Am going to have lunch, explore the Institute grounds (including the Aruveyda massage centre) and...

Feb 9, 2010 - Broke In Tiruvannamalai

Page three of the Lonely Planet says "Don't leave home without..." and there follow 13 bullet points. I seem to have everything beginning with vital items such as a visa and vaccinations and ending with the mundane like mosquito repellant. Of course, I don't have sunscreen. That's for girls. The last bullet point reads "Expect the unexpected." so the things I have forgotten must relate to that. In it's some 1200 pages the Inidian guide gives extensive advice but nowhere does it mention checking that these items aren't falling apart. Whilst...

Nov 18, 2009 - Pondicherry/Mamallapurum/Hyderabad/Bidar

You can understand why we're having great difficulty in explaining where we want to go - just look at the names!! At least this keyboard has the letters on the keys - the last one had letters cut out of magazines, different colours and sizes, just cellotaped on. Looked like an incomplete ransom note. OK - still travelling (kind of) well. Whilst at Pondicherry visited Auroville, a new-age commune about 15 kms out of town set up about 25 years ago with "we are one" and "all nations together" type of philosophy. Very interesting although you...

Apr 20, 2009 - Hyderabad, India

What a surprise we had when we landed in Hyderabad - a brand-spankin' new airport with manicured lawns awaited us - we were so impressed we took photos on the taxi ride out :) The airport restrooms were as clean as those in Hong Kong and much cleaner than most in the US! (We cannot say the same about most train and bus station restrooms - but let's see how that changes in the next 10 or so years maybe.) Chris's friend from university, John, connected us with the Dasari family who were our gracious and generous hosts during our stay in this...
