Jun 6, 2016 - Fjords

We are leaving the south region and going to the east region. There are 8 regions in Iceland, numbered 2-9. Roads in each region start with the number corresponding to the region, roads in region 2 start with 2; in region 3 with 3, etc. There is no region 1 as the Ring Road which runs through all regions is number 1. Reykjavik is in region 4, Golden Circle is region 3 and part of the south region. The last 2 days we were in region 2. Today we are going to region 9. It was cloudy and misty when we left this morning to travel along the...

May 27, 2015 - The Eastern Fjords

Egilsstadir, Iceland We have 39 souls on our tour. By country: 20 from Australia, 9 from Canada, 8 from the US, and 2 from South Korea. Our merry group got to play on the beach today. There is no sand on this beach. It is made of graduated sizes of black pebbles ranging from pretty good sized throwing rocks to pea-size. We hiked along the beach (the pebbles made it a challenge) and up to a lighthouse. On the beach we explored everything we could find. We saw sea shells and a desiccated crab, sampled some sea weed (rather salty) and marveled...

May 17, 2015 - Really really cold really really hot

We headed out to dettifoss falls because the thermal baths werent open yet for summer hours...this is after searching high and low for typical lack of Ice signage...and any sign shown are hopelessly mired with extra letters looking like squatty d's,crammed ae's, and other non identifiables rendering them much too syllabic, consonantic and otherwise illegible. This sent us off plan to the falls which are actually on the way to next destination. Not according to Hoyle. Be that as it may. We blast off for an hour to the falls. Upon arrival...

Jul 10, 2012 - Ásbyrgi & Dettifoss

On July 6th, my Aunt and I drove to Egilsstaÿir to pick up my friend Ashley who was going to come visit for the weekend. After a few days of trying to figure out the bus route and costs, my Aunt was nice enough to drive the 2 1/2 hours to pick her up. We left at about 4pm and it was nice to be able to see a bit more of the landscape. The next day around noon we went on a bit of a tour to see Ásbyrgi & Dettifoss, which were about an hour drive. Ásbyrgi is a horseshoe shaped depression about 3.5 km in length and 1 km width. Ásbyrgi was most...

Aug 9, 2010 - Hali to Egilsstadir

Upon waking up we had a very nice surprise this morning. It was not raining and a half hour later the sun was shining! What a lift for our spirits! A short walk before breakfast treated us to sunshine on the glaciers and the ocean - what a view to wake up to! Today again we backtracked to Jokulsarlon and took the boat tour in the lagoon among small icebergs that have broken off from the glacier. They are slowly melting (some take 7 years) and floating under the bridge on the Ring Road to the ocean. The sun was brightly shining on the ice -...

May 13, 2009 - Random Hike, Skaftafell, Vatnajokull, & Jokularson

(FYI: The town is actually called Egilstadir, but this website has incorrectly identified it as Egilsstayir. Oh well.) Today we drove the rest of the southern part of the country and started up the eastern coast. We stopped in Skaftafell - Europe's largest national park - and hiked up to Vatnajokull - the country's largest glacier (the glacier is about 3000 sq. miles). We also stopped at Jokulsarlon to see a lake full of icebergs (very sweet) as well as numerous quick stops along the way for views we stumbled upon while driving.

May 13, 2009 - Cool Stuff + The ever so terrifying, seemingly near death experience on our way to Vinsland (05/13/09-Part 2)

We tried to take a shortcut up a huge mountain on a gravel road but decided to turn around when we started moving backwards in our (non)hardcore Toyota Yaris. We lost power and the car was sliding backwards with the emergency brake on. Moving backwards in a Yaris on a steep Icelandic mountain surrounded by clouds - we could see about 30 feet in front and behind us - is easily the scariest experience either of us has ever had. In this case, the road less travelled was not the better choice. Luckily we turned around (somehow) and got down...

May 9, 2009 - Hofn to Egilsstadir

We set off after breakfast in search of sea birds (Jane really wants to see Puffins) and took a detour off the road to a nesting site. We were nearly blown away by the fierce wind, found a radar station that forbade entry, and taking photos, backtracked through black sand dunes and past steep scree slopes. How could anyone push a road through this stuff. In places the rockfall protection barriers have huge rocks sitting on them or have been pulverised by a rock fall or the armco on the other side of the road is bent out of shape. The cliffs...

Jul 22, 2005 - Eiðar (is)
