Sep 24, 2018 - krabi/ Bangkok/Vienna/ Budapest

Spoke too soon about the weather. First couple of days at Sofitel Klong Muang Beach the sun shone and it was fabulous, walking, exploring new territory and beach strolling. The area is a little like Ao Nang 10 years ago – very quiet, acres of jungle, not much traffic, shops only along the main street and NO touting. Hotels were mainly fairly new and high-end, very little backpacker type accommodation. Consequently massages, taxis and food outlets were all very expensive, apparently there’s a cartel operating. Then the monsoons hit. The rest...

Sep 22, 2018 - Budapest

We left the ship this morning, in the rain, and started our bus ride south to Budapest. Road construction forced us off the freeway, and our trip went to a slow pace for about an hour. We arrived in Budapest for a late lunch, followed by a two hour city bus tour. It was quite a bit cooler today , with on and off rain. We saw areas of the city that had been completely destroyed during the Second World War. They were rebuilt by the Russians under communist control after the war. Tonight we are staying at Sofitel Hotel. It isn’t as nice as the...

Sep 18, 2018 - Budapest, Hungary

When we arrived at the Budapest airport where we were whisked away by tour bus to the Sofitel Hotel downtown next to the river Danube. There we discover that for safety reasons related to the extreme low water situation of the river, our ship, The Ve had sailed ahead to avoid getting stuck in the area or worse yet damage to the ship. So, after a very welcome and comfortable night sleep we got on the tour buses for our trip around the city. When that was done we had a wonderful lunch provided by the company at a riverside restaurant. Then it...

Dear all, Well here we were back at Budapest. We did a river cruise on the Tlvatta river in Prague, but it was not as pretty as the cruise we did in Budapest last week when we were here. The rest of the group are out on that cruise tonight but we said we did not want to pay extra for the cruise and repeat it. Later yesterday afternoon we went to Lidice. It was a town destroyed by the Germans in WW2. The village men were sent away and the women and 86 children were murdered. It is a sad story but the memorial is truly beautiful. The town no...

Our Big Trip

Aug 9, 2018 - 7& 8th August

Hello there, Well we are to the last two days of our trip. We are in Budapest and it is a very pretty city. Tuesday night we had a lovely dinner cruise on the Danube River. Have included a couple of the photos. Wednesday was the walk/drive around the City and a visit to the Parliment in the afternoon before a wonderful farewell dinner at Grundels Restaurant. It was a bit sad as we were saying goodbye to our new friends. Looking forward to getting to Amsterdam for a couple of quiet days and a visit to a laundromat to give our clothes a...

Our Big Trip

Jun 1, 2018 - Beautiful Budapest

After settling in to my delightful Budapest homestay, I headed off for a coffee and then to meet with Sue at the Secessionist museum. Unfortunately, Maria, my host did have a coffee machine but did not know how to use it. So I was really keen to get out for my first coffee. My second one was consumed in the delightful cafe of the museum, which seemed part antique shop, part cafe, part museum. Sue and I paid our fee and then the lights were switched on for us and we perused the Art Nouveau furniture, artworks and ephemera on two floors....

May 7, 2018 - Love-love-love Budapest

Saturday, May 5th, we had an early alarm because we were cruising into Budapest at 7:15AM and the view was spectacular. It is the mot beautiful city we have seen, with it beautiful churches with tiled roofs, its castle sitting above the city and it own “Statue of Liberty”. Budapest is divided into two cities by the Danube River, Buda and Pest. It is said that there are two kinds of people in Budapest, the ones who live in Buda and the ones who want to!! We had our usual delicious breakfast and departed for a 3 hour bus tour of Budapest. As...

Nov 30, 2017 - Leaving Rainy Budapest

I spent a restless night. Despite eating carefully yesterday, my hiatus hernia was playing up. Christine did not get much sleep due to my restlessness, so we were both a little tired this morning. It was pouring rain, sometimes mixed with sleet. We decided not to take the tour of Budapest. We felt we had seen most of the places that were to be visited, and afterwards discovered that the one place we had not seen, was not really visited, just pointed out, so we were glad we had elected not to go. Christine was afraid I would need washroom...

Nov 29, 2017 - All Aboard!

We woke to different weather this morning. When we opened the drapes we could see the roads were damp and a sleety snow was falling. The overcast sky did not look as though things would improve - and they did not. The same weather prevailed all day. We had breakfast and packed then went down to check out and see if we could get a cab. Things did not look promising as the area seemed to be locked down. The receptionist told us to take a seat and she would see what she could do. While we waited we met another couple going on the same cruise...

Nov 28, 2017 - Markets and Opera

We had a leisurely breakfast and spoke to the concierge for a short while. Yesterday we had been told you could buy tickets on the tram but when we got on the tram we were told you had to get them at a machine, but nobody could tell us where we could find a machine. The lady we spoke to said it was unlikely we would be checked and just to stay on the tram. Today we asked the concierge where we could buy the tickets. He started to tell us that they were available in the hotel, then asked if we were EU citizens, which we are, and told us that...

Nov 27, 2017 - Interesting and Frustrating Day

We both slept soundly till Christine got up to the washroom and wanted to talk the rest of the night! We got up and got ready then went down to the lobby to get a few questions answered then went for breakfast which is served in a sort of balcony or mezzanine above the lobby in quite an attractive setting. From there we could see the activity in the lobby and the increased security was obvious, especially when one of the fellows adjusted his jacket and revealed a sidearm under his dress coat. One wondered what those with trench coats and...

Nov 26, 2017 - Travelling to Budapest

Well it has been an interesting and long two days. Christine woke early yesterday and did not feel good. The doctor had detected a minor problem when she had her physical 10 days ago and ordered another blood test which showed the same condition, but as Christine was not showing any symptoms, decided not to treat it, but investigate further when we returned. Yesterday changed that, so we quickly got ready and went to the hospital about 7:30am. We were attended to without delay and the doctor prescribed antibiotics which he assured us would...
