Sep 12, 2019 - On Our Way

We are on our way for the 2nd part of our Eastern European travels. In 2017 we went to Poland and Estonia and on this trip we are going to Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Our first stop is Budapest. A relatively uneventful flight with a stopover in Paris. It was somewhat surprising how busy the airport was but fortunately Judi C had arranged for a driver to get us to our apartment. It is a really nice apartment done in modern Italian. Turns out the owner is Italian and he used an Italian architect to refurnish the place. And it...

Jun 5, 2019 - Day 14 = Budapest

We arrived in Budapest in the morning, so we didn't see the lights that we were told were spectacular. By 9:30, we departed for a city tour. The Pest side is busy with lots of historic buildings. The Buda side is quieter with hills and residential areas. Guess which side I liked! In the afternoon, we were free to roam but I stayed on the boat and talked to a couple I had met earlier on the trip. I wanted to walk to the shoe memorial, but I was afraid it was too far away and everyone else wanted to go to the market instead. In the evening,...

May 19, 2019 - Budapest

Sunday, May 19, 2019 The last day in Budapest We came down for breakfast at 9 am, dressed for a nice spring day. Then we noticed that it was raining quite hard! After breakfast Eke changed to long pants again and we put our jackets on – umbrellas in the backpack! Our plan was to make our way over to the synagogue and hopefully get inside. After that visit we had planned to meet Eke’s nephew Wytze (who is in Budapest visiting friends) for lunch. We stopped on the way for a coffee/tea, shared a sweet, and took our jackets off. By then the sun...

May 18, 2019 - Budapest

Saturday, May 18, 2019 Exploring a “bit a” Budapest We slept in this morning - until 9 am! I wonder why! We took it easy and were outside at 11 am. Brian wanted to look for a new pair of long pants because the weather was not particularly warm yesterday. Stepping outside we noticed that the weather was much milder today and now we were overdressed! We had a quick bite for breakfast at Starbucks of all places! Not our favourite place but Eke needed something to eat and we didn’t see any other place that sold a good breakfast. We went to the...

May 17, 2019 - Toronto to Budapest

Flying and Arriving in Budapest May 16 – 17 Our trip has started! We left the house on May 16 at 1 pm and drove to Toronto; parked at Valet Parking; took the bus to Terminal 3; went to the Self Serve luggage check in and then enjoyed something to drink and a snack in the Air France/KLM lounge. We left Toronto and had an uneventful flight. Eke talked with the person beside her who was going to Arusha in Tanzania. Eke had been there last year and they shared experiences in Africa and then on to other things in their lives. You do meet...

May 10, 2019 - And the End Has Come

Our bags had to be outside our room by 5:15am and we had a 5:45am pick-up for the airport, so we were up and at ‘me very early. The hotel restaurant does not open that early, but they had a small continental breakfast set up as well as a boxed meal for each of us. Our ride was early, so we were on the road before 5:45 for a 30 minute drive to Ferenc Liszt International Airport. As Dennis mentioned in yesterday's post, the Hungarians love Franz Listz. An hour flight to Munich, then an oh-so-long flight to LAX. Our Premium Economy seats on...

May 9, 2019 - Not All Tears Are Alike

Parting is such sweet sorrow, right? Our last full day of vacation was a great day in Budapest, spent all on the Pest side. Our tour-included buffet breakfast was nice, but I will very much look forward to home breakfast food. We had the morning to ourselves prior to our 1:30 Viking excursion. So, we set about our own walking tour, to catch up with some of the must see sites we’d not yet visited. First up was St. Stephen’s Basilica, about a 15 minute walk from our hotel, the Corinthia. The weather outlook was not great, though we hoped for...

May 8, 2019 - Happy Birthday to Me!

The day started leisurely enough. We didn’t have to have our bags ready until 8:30 and the transfer to our hotel wasn’t scheduled to leave until 9:30. So, we had a nice breakfast and chilled in the lounge until it was time to go. The hotel is actually walking distance from the ship, but the bus transferring us had to take the long way and it took about 20 minutes to get there. We dropped off a few people, picked up a few others and headed to Szentendre for a morning of sightseeing, and shopping. From there, we took a short drive to Skanzen...

May 8, 2019 - Splat!

Splat! We don’t know why, but today we “hit a brick wall”. So slow to get going - but it has been non stop for 14 days. After a late brekky, Heather continued her Hungarian language “lesson” with the Hotel Receptionist, who has been most obliging. Locals do appreciate it when we make an attempt to speak some of their language. Walked our local attractions, including the Palace precinct and Cathedral. Coffee in a quaint coffee shop, just near the WW ll “Hospital in the Rock”. Coffee revived us a little more, then decided to go back to Hotel...

70 Canals 2019

May 7, 2019 - Budapest

What an absolutely beautiful Romantic city, dating back to Roman times. Our Hotel is next to Buda Castle, and near impressive Mathias Church. Great panoramas over to Pest and Hungarian Parliament. Today we did “serious” sight seeing in this bustling city. We walked and walked, did 3 hop on/off bus routes and another bus took us directly up to our street from the River area. Found a delightful little family owned Restaurant on river bank, that served great coffee. Great staff and atmosphere, so we returned for a dinner of traditional...

May 7, 2019 - ... those who can’t

Wow! Our last full day afloat. This morning started out gloriously and the day has continued as much. We awoke about 90 minutes before reaching Budapest and enjoyed a beautiful, leisurely pace into this grand Pearl of the Danube. What a magnificent approach it was. The beautiful bridges and buildings and ships. And the castles and palaces. This morning we bus-toured the city, first viewing the flat Pest area east of the river, then running across the river to the hillier Buda area. We visited yet another beautiful church, this one the...

May 6, 2019 - Must we say good bye

We have some influence on Royal births - when we were in Britain in 1982, Prince William was born, and today Prince Harry’s, Archie was born. Will we be here for the birth of the next generation of royals???? Dreading leaving Southampton. The family has been wonderful to us. We walked Marion’s delightful country garden one last time - wisteria, roses, azaleas, grape vine, fig tree, and many more annuals in spring bloom. Played ball with “Marley bear”, then Nadine drove us to Airport. Great conversation in car. She is such a vibrant...
