We have traveled from Georgetown to Berbice, New Amsterdam to visit my Uncle Dave and his family. We are having a "whale of a time" as they say in Guyana. Berbice is much smaller than Georgetown and a bit less rushed. We have been able to walk around more freely without feeling like we will be clipped by a bus. My Auntie Loraine is quite the cook and we are reminded to take walks because of the extra pounds we will gain if we eat her food all day. She bakes cakes, pineapple filled pastires, homemade passion fruit juice, cheese filled...

Sep 7, 2005 - Guyana - New Amsterdam

After taking the short ferry crossing over to Guyana, the immigration officer who meets us goes by the name of Newton - hopefully an auspicious start! Immediately we are struck by the change of architecture - gone are the Dutch-style wooden houses, to be replaced with houses on stilts, mosques, Hindu temples and churches all muddled in together. We travel along the Eastern Highway going through tiny and numerous townships - more than 50 in all, with quirky names like Kitty, Success, Rising Sun, Profit and Bohemia!
