Sep 10, 2010 - Soaking up the sun in Samos

It is ten past eight in the morning and I am worried. We are standing in front of the hotel at Kusadasi and our transport to the ferry has not arrived. I can see the ferry across the water loading cargo, but it’s at least a kilometre from here. Even if we leave now and run like maniacs dragging our luggage, we will miss the 8.30 a.m. departure. We had challenged an 8 a.m. pickup for an 8.30 a.m. ferry departure with the ticket agent the night before. “Cutting it a bit fine aren’t we?” I ask, looking directly into his eyes. “It’s no problem,...

Oct 5, 2009 - Paradise...or a close approximation

We had a pleasant ferry ride to the Greek island of Samos. There was a half hour taxi ride to the town of Karlovassi on the Island. the views were fantastic. The hills were greener than we have seen since leaving Fort McMurray. The water was shades of blue that so far in my life have only been seen on posters in travel agencies. The taxi driver is from Boston, when asked why he came to Samos, he implored me to look around and notice that it was PARADISE. The women who ran our hotel was from Ottawa, and when asked about her move, she also...

Aug 26, 2009 - Travel to Greece and Mykonos

Today was to be a travel day so naturally we were up early. Our shuttle arrived at 7:30 to take us to the port. Here we went through the customs process and boarded our large water taxi to take us to the first of our Greek Islands. We are starting to get used to the feelings when we leave one place to travel to the next. Invariable there is a slight sadness at leaving what has become familiar and saying good-bye to some of the people we have met. This is however mixed with the excitement of going to a new place, seeing new things, and...

Sep 20, 2008 - Samos Island, Greece

Ravi -- The thing that infuriated me most about attempting to plan our time in the Greek Isles is that it is impossible to discern the ferry schedule ahead of time. Most of the websites don’t work, and those that do were completely useless in terms of when boats run from island to island! In fact, we had originally planned to enter Greece from Turkey’s Mediterranean coastal city of Bodrum, into the island of Rhodes. However, the ferry schedule seemed extremely sketchy, as was the ongoing ferries to the rest of the Greek Islands. Samos...

May 26, 2008 - Greece - Samos

Monday 26th We had to wake up early for our transfer to the harbour to catch our ferry to Samos. Samos is a small Greek Island, just off the coast of Turkey. We had to clear immigration, because of course we were leaving and entering another country. It was strange doing it at a Port rather than an airport! Our 8.30 a.m ferry to Samos, ended up being a 9:30 am ferry, after it took ages to clear immigration. It took about 2 hours to get to Samos on a small tug boat! No luxurious yacht, catamaran or cruise liner for us. A tug boat. Well...

The Arnash Adventure

May 14, 2008 - Samos (Greek Islands) - Chilled out in Paradise.

The views coming into Samos were great. Typical of what I've seen of The Greek Islands in pictures. Lots of water and lots of houses perched upon the hill side. Very picturesque and warming. Once I got off the ferry I went to the tourist office and tried to book a ticket out to Santorini or Mykonos for the same day. The guy serving me was as camp as they come and very funny. He had all the mannerisms of someone doing there best to be as camp as they could, but he was serious. He ended telling me how much he disliked the place now and that...

Sep 8, 2007 - Samos

We arrived in Samos only to find out that all the high speed ferries were broken and that if we wanted to leave the island it would have to be Saturday, tomorrow. We only arrived at 6pm, so there would be no chance to see the island. However, we didnt want to be stuck there because we have an all-inclusive hotel booked in Rhodes. All I can say about Samos is that the food was really really good! Off to Kos! -K

Jun 29, 2007 - Samos

Samos is a lot like Chios - only a bit bigger. It's super hot - we heard from a very friendly tour-booking guy (who LOVED us and chatted us up forever because he loved our itinerary) that about 14 people died in Athens from the heat wave. We were also told by the same tour guide that the ferry to our next island only ran on Saturday, so we had to cut our trip to Samos one day short. Also, he informed us that the trip tp Turkey, while interesting, was super expensive and not something that we want to do in the heat. It would have cost us...

Oct 28, 2006 - The Difference a Few km Makes

Greece Turkey and then Greece. Welcome back to the EU, with all its splendour, and all its high costs! One of the most fascinating things about moving from country to country is the discovery of how similar, yet different close neighbours can be. I suppose it's a little like real neighbours. Imagine walking out your front door and heading across the hedge over to Archie's house, and just walking into the kitchen to go and make a sandwich. Instead of the hot Hungarian salami and a nice herbed havarti, you would probably be faced with a...

May 16, 2006 - Greek Islands - Ikaria

Ikaria doesn't have much of a tourist infrastructure but it does have amazing views from it 1027m mountain. We rode from a port town on one side over the pass to a port town on the other side. Our highway led us through pine forests, vineyards, and past olive and fruit tree orchards...it was stunning.

May 14, 2006 - Greek Islands - Samos, GREECE

We departed Turkey from the seaside town of Kusadasi, by ferry, to Samos - in the NE Aegean. We arrived late and were unable to find a pension so after a Greek Salad and beer we headed out of town and ended up camping out in a rural backyard beside a quiet beach. Great to actually use the tent we brought! We had a fantastic ride of about three quarters of the island. The landscape is dense mountain greenery with hidden farms, villages and rockcuts that drop to the sea. We had a seaside breakfast in charming Koklari, hang out on Potami...
