Jul 17, 2017 - Naxos

Naxos is a bigger island than Paros and much larger than Antiparos. I found a lovely little room in a four-plex which even has a communal fridge and a tiny balcony overlooking a rather overgrown garden. Every morning I would wander into the village to buy fresh bread and watermelon for my breakfast -- heaven! I've explored the island on foot, following the rutted roads and pathways that criss-cross the island. Olive groves with lounging goats and sheep are everywhere and the air has a rich, dusty smell to it. I am so totally relaxed after...

May 30, 2017 - Naxos

After a lovely sleep in, we tucked into a sumptuous breakfast that Mary had prepared for us. Everything from warm bread and local jams, omelettes, bruschettos, homemade pastries, to delicious greek yogurt and fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee...we were waddling up to our room at the end I tell you! We just about needed another sleep to rest after it!! After a bit of a rest to let our stomachs settle, we thought we should try to work it off so I took Toni through some Pilates exercises on our balcony. It was a little warm in the sun but...

May 29, 2017 - Naxos

After an early 5am start we were on board the fast seajet ferry Champion 1 sailing to Naxos. I was looking forward to relaxing in sun and warm weather. 3 hours later we arrived to find it not as warm as I had hoped but the scenery made up for the cooler temperature. Waiting for us on the dock was our host John, who drove us out to his studio rooms. Mary and he have delightful rooms about 10 minutes from the town. After changing and settling into our rooms, he kindly drove us back into town where we had a delicious lunch of a true Naxos...

Oct 8, 2015 - Naxos

Wednesday, October 7 After another great breakfast at the Hotel Portobello, we checked out and our pre-booked taxi whisked us to the Old Port in a few minutes. We boarded the Superjet high speed ferry that landed us in Naxos a mere 45 minutes later. Naxos is one of the larger islands in the Cyclades chain, verdant and arable and with its own source of water, unlike many other islands. While not dependent upon tourism, it certainly does tourism well. Naxos Town, or Chora as primary island towns are known, has a pleasant harbour and harbour...

May 11, 2015 - Cooking with Anna and Evgenia in Moni

Oh goodness what a day and it's not over! We met Stuart for our drive up to the mountains for our cooking class. We had one stop for a view of the terrain which was very rocky, quite a change from what we saw yesterday. We arrived just after 11 in the village of Moni, population probably 200, not counting cats. A bit of confusion at first as it was clear they were not prepared for us. Although we could not understand, it was clear from the conversation that momma had gotten the information wrong. Not a problem - we went off for a walk and...

May 10, 2015 - Hidden Naxos

it was a great day today. We met our guide Stuart, at the arranged location and headed out of town to explore The Hidden Naxos - not a big tour group in sight. Naxos is definitely greener than Mykonos and as a result you can see a variety of crops in the flats and on the hillsides which have been largely terraced. There will be very little rain from now until Oct/Nov. The views of the small towns were great with mostly white homes and many blue roofed churches perched on the hillsides. Since Stuart is English but has lived here for 16...

May 9, 2015 - Naxos

The wind continued to blow all night in Mykonos. I guess those north winds were just an indication of the day ahead. We assume that is why our fast ferry was very late and took longer to get from point A to point B. Onto the ferry and the first order of business was to ask the people in our seats to leave. Surprisingly enough the water wasn't bad and we arrived late but not sick. The ferry was jammed and there really wasn't much of a system to put the bags on for the different locations. As a result, 7 of us got off fairly easy but poor...

Oct 8, 2009 - More lazy days on the Aegean

Not much to say, Naxos is another pleasent island however once again we really did not explore this island. We were only here three days and between rest, relaxing, beach action, pools, a castle, a museum, two acheological museums and a historic monument well there was just no time to see the rest of the island. Naxos seems to be a more tourist oriented island than Samos but that is just a fact and not ment to imply anthing positive or negative.

Oct 4, 2007 - Naxos

We made it to Naxos yesterday with the big ferries running on a very windy day. It was only a 2-hour trip from Santorini and didn't feel too rough considering the winds. Upon arrival at port the touts were all over Al and I again. We had a preference of going to a place called Irene 2 but the area for information was empty. One of the touts was female and Al thought we should give her a chance to show us her place so we ended up going to a place called Pension Stella with Georgia. It was cute! It had a kitchenette, small balcony; it was...

Aug 6, 2007 - Naxos

Literalmente no pasa nada....

Jun 11, 2007 - Nutty Naxos

Long golden beaches and beautiful clear water Under German occupation Hotel like a concentration camp We arrived in Naxos after a truly fantastic three days in Paros - which might in some way have influenced our conclusion that Naxos is below par (I originally wrote crap, but Liz felt it too harsh). Naxos is much larger than either Paros or Mykonos, and is in fact the largest island in the Cyclades. The town centre is heavily commercialized and geared to extract as much money from the unfortunate tourist as possible - this could have...
