May 17, 2017 - Sea Kayaking Kefplonia

Arrived in Athens @ 2 pm Friday, May 5th. I had an interesting seat mate from Seattle to Paris. Santoosh arrived at the UW to study medicine in 1970 and practiced in Everett. He is a gardener so we had lots to talk about. Also caught up on movies that I had missed. We were scheduled to connect with the contingent arriving from Rome at the Athens airport. To Anns and my surprise their baggage claim was next to ours and they arrived 10 minutes after we did. Spent the night in Athens walking to the district close to the Acropolis for dinner....

Jun 18, 2015 - Argostoli

Thursday, June 18th. Having had a very restless night because of backache and hip and leg pain I finally gave in and went to the ship’s doctor. I was the first in to see her. After an X-Ray and quick exam she assured me that nothing was broken or cracked. All I was suffering from was exhausted, overextended muscles. She thinks I might have overdone it over the last few months.(Moi !!!) I just wanted drugs to ease the pain. After I assured her I would take it easy over the next couple of weeks, (she wanted me on complete bed rest) she gave...

Sep 28, 2011 - Argostoli

Wednesday 28th September 2011 Weather:-25degrees/sunny Argostoli, , Greece, is a lovely little town which was within easy walking distance of where we were moored and as most of the tours went to some caves on the other side of the Island we opted to do our own thing and just wander around. The town was good for shopping for those inclined to buy souvenirs and for me it was especially good because we found an internet cafe’ with a fast and cheap internet connection so I could get this journal sorted out. When I originally set up the map...

Jul 3, 2011 - Greek shipping

Well the kids could barely stand the suspense. We packed up but hadn't told them the plan yet. They'd had so much fun windsurfing that they were hoping that we might stay a second week at Club Vass. They thought we might be renting an RV to explore more of Greece. So when we walked down the town pier with our luggage to where our rented sailboat was arriving they finally figured it out. Our captain Andreas from nearby Lefkas gently backed up the Bavaria 45 to the wharf and we moved aboard. We went back into town to have a last lunch...

Sep 4, 2010 - Argostoli

Argostoli was one of the only days that Amanda and I had a planned excursion through the cruise ship. We decided to go on the full day-trip to Melissani Lake and the Drogarati Cave. We hopped on our bus first thing in the morning and were given a little bit of history about the area. We saw many of the famous landmarks (including areas where Captain Corellis Mandolin was filmed). The only one we stopped at to look was Greeces most famous and most photographed beach: Myrtos beach. It is a long white coast placed at the bottom of the cliffs....

Oct 17, 2009 - Cefalonia - Argostoli

Sailed in on a beautiful sunny day. The feeling I got from the island - a laid back, sleepy holiday place - after some of the hectic pace - it was great - time for DREAMWORLD! I wandered the streets - looked in the shops stopped for a coffee at "Haagen Dazs" and got tempted by a photo. What arrived was a rather oversized, over the top dessert - crepes, ice cream, caramel sauce, bananas, cream, nuts - on a DINNER PLATE - MASSIVE! I ate the lot and enjoyed every little morsel. Back on the ship I went for a late ? lunch (another dessert as we...

Feb 14, 2009 - In Search of Captain Corelli's Mandolin

2/14/09 Santa Lucia...Santaaa Lucia! Valentines Day we arrived in possibly the most romantic of all Greek Islands, Kefalonia (the largest Ionian Island which lies to the west of the Greek mainland). I have wanted to come here for years because it is the site of my favorite movie, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz. Eye candy galore, interesting plot line, gorgeous cinemetography, humor, song, and a love story, what could be better? For those of you who don’t know the story, it details the Italian occupation...

Jul 8, 2008 - To Ithaki

After exploring Taormina for the morning we met at the boat at 3pm and set sail for Greece. We had a distance of 265 nautical miles to cover and were estimating about 2 days as we usually average about 5nm per hour. As we left the small harbour the wind was already picking up and the seas were quite choppy. Lars had looked at the weather report and the prediction was for about 15 knots of wind from the north. As we were heading nearly east that was good. Well, the wind increased almost immediately and we had wind up to 37 knots which is a...

Oct 6, 2007 - Off to Samos

Up at 2 am so we could make sure to catch the 3:10 ferry. As usual the ferry was late. On our way to the port we noticed some of the bars were still open but other than that the place was quiet. We could have slept in. Once on the ferry we slept for about 3 more hours. This ferry was old looking and sounded like it was in rough shape. It shook and rattled even though the sea was calm. I sure hoped that it would make the trip! We stopped at a few islands along the way that were very picturesque. One we reached Vathy, the port on Samos...

May 20, 2007 - Corfu

Adam and i flew out of Heathrow airport which was huge. Once we determined where we needed to be, we boarded our flight to Athens. Upon arrival, we had our first experince in a non-english speaking country. Our cab driver did not know where our Hostel was and we could not communicate with him to give him the address. To make matters worse, it was pouring rain and you could not see 10 feet in front of you. The drivers out here are terrible and i think that they believe that they have to keep blowing the horn to make their car run. We...

Michelle and I take a train across Italy to a port-city called Brindisi. From here we take an overnight ferry to Corfu. Meet up with Bryce and Caeleigh, who will take a different ferry here from Venice. Five nights in a legendary hostel called the "Pink Panther" - hugely popular with Canadians apparently.

Jun 2, 2006 - Postcard Pretty Fiskardo

After several sublime days at the laidback fishing village of Kioni, Ithaki, eating seafood as we watched fishermen mend their nets, we took a ferry to Kefallonia. The postcard pretty town of Fiskardo is your classic little Greek island town - and a welcome sight when you arrive by boat, with its crystal clear waters, yachts arriving and departing, and buzzy cafés and bars lining the waterfront. While it's a popular spot for European sailing tourists, the yachtie vibe was relaxed and unpretentious - for a change. One of the first hotels we...
