Jun 17, 2012 - Greece, Chios Island

Thursday 14/6/12 to Sunday 17/6/12 Chios, Greece It was difficult to leave the comfort of Chios Rooms, we worked on the blog sitting out on the balcony where the heat wasn't so bad. Set off south down the east coast at 1pm and the temp was about 32C. 15 mins later stopped for a swim and lunch. The road was a series of ups and downs about 20 ks to kallimasia. We went down a very steep dirt track toward the sea to find a camp spot but abandoned that idea when we thought about having to push the bikes back up. The Garmin showed that there were...

Jun 13, 2012 - Cesme to Chios,Greece

Wednesday 13/6/12 Cesme to Chios,Greece Pete finds another hole in the tyre tube, probably from that same thorn! Erdil helps us book ferry tickets for 7pm tonight. We have a relaxing day swimming in the Marina, we have a salad lunch at a waterfront restaurant, enjoy a beer and biscuits in a shady park while writing postcards home. We do a short cycle up and down the tourist shops and speak awhile with a shopowner who says business is very slow, few foreigners this year, more turks visiting but they have no money to spend. Nickie goes to...

Nov 12, 2008 - Anticipating Turkey

Randy I hope to enjoy Turkey; and I expect to. Though I’ve never been before, I’ve heard very good tales from friends about their experiences. These tales, consistent over the past twenty-five years, lead me to expect a country “a lot like Greece but a bit more exotic” in the words of a friend of mine. It’s easy for me to recall just a month ago when we entered Greece and I didn’t know the first thing about any of the islands; not their names, their history, or how they are the same and how they’re different. I feel that way about Turkey...

Jun 26, 2007 - Chios

Hi All - we are in Chios now. We arrived on the ferry at 4am. Yup, nice and early. We sat around for long long time & watched the sun come up over Turkey. That was cool - there are pictures! We tried top check into our hotel - but no one was there yet - thing start pretty late in Greece. So, eventually we were able to just keave our bags and walk around. It's a pretty neat town - right on the water. I had a delicious egg and potato omlette for breakfast - the potatos were frenchfries - so that was excellent. Hopefully, we will be able to...

May 1, 2007 - Kusadasi, Turkey

We arrived in Kusadasi, Turkey this morning. Kusadasi means "Pigeon Island" and this is one of Turkey's principle holiday resorts. It is situated on the west coast of Turkey and is reputed for one of the most attractive city of the Aegean. It has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters....claims to have 300 days of sunshine a year. Lots of beaches and warm clear waters bring the Turkish people here in the summer months for holiday. We began our day with a walk through the shopping area of the town center. They have...

Feb 25, 2007 - Island of Chios, Greece

As we are meeting our kids in Athens on March 3 we had to choose between driving the 1600 Km from Izmir to Athens (in a week) or take an overnight ferry. Despite the cost, the ferry won out! The ferry leaves Cesme, on the peninsula west of Izmir, for Chios - a Greek island so close to Turkey you can see it with your naked eye - and then on to Piraeus, the port of Athens. Cesme is "okay" but really the summer holiday destination for all the Turkish families from Izmir so filled with holiday villages completely deserted this time of year. We...
