Jun 8, 2017 - Crete

Well, we are supposed to have docked somewhere else in Crete and had all our plans based on that but yesterday we were told we were going to Chania about 2 hours west of where we were to have originally gone. Next we were told we were docking at Souda, a naval dockyard 7 kl from Chania. Later they told us we were docking in the old port of Chania instead. This morning were were again told we'd be docking in the naval dockyard which is what actually happened. So, given Chania is much like Corfu I've decided not to visit this town but Ron is...

Oct 29, 2016 - Chania Crete - Jewel of the Seas

Our first port was Chania (pronounced “Hah knee uh”), Crete. We took the bus into town and wandered around a bit. We saw the Venetian harbor and lighthouse and walked through the Agora, where a wide variety of items are sold from souvenirs to raw meat. Stopped in for a few minutes at the Chania Cathedral, dedicated to Panagia Trimartyri (Virgin of the Three Martyrs), the patron saint of Chania. It is called “Trimartyri” because, while the central aisle is dedicated to the Virgin, the north aisle is dedicated to St Nicholas and the south...

Retired at Last!

Jun 28, 2016 - Chania Crete

Chania is the second largest city of Crete and was sold after the Byzantium Era to the Venetians back in 1204 for 100 silver marks. After a leisurely breakfast at one of the many tavernas opposite Nea Chora beach we walked along the coast and into the old town. This is where the Venetian Harbour, the old port, the narrow shopping streets and waterfront restaurants are all located. This is the tourist heart of Chania with old buildings, museums, churches and crafts shops, some with genuinely interesting and sometimes local, products on...

Aug 27, 2015 - Watch out mother!

Last full day in Vamos so we decided on a trip to the old town of Rethymnon to the east . We filled up with petrol ( had to pay cash!) and drove over the hill towards Vrises where J expected a slip road onto the highway. After facing about for 10 minutes we found the longest slip road in the world. It was about 1.5 km long! Onto the highway we got up to cruising speed - but no relaxing as everyone wants to overtake you at every opportunity. We followed Our landlady's advice. She told us what exit to use and then said there was an...

Aug 26, 2015 - Oooh, aaaagh, eueeeww, (expletive deleted) ! #

After a reasonable drive yesterday, we opted for a pottering day today. The wind yesterday must have had an effect - we missed the alarm and woke at about 9:45! By the time we breakfasted, showered and checked maps and communicated ( including about a blocked sewer) it was nearly 12. We drove south over the hill and turned up a rough and rutted dirt road to the church of Koimisis of Theotokou (11-14C) - unfortunately locked ( although supposed to be only closed!). It is set amongst stone ruins of other buildings, and large Eucalypt...

Aug 25, 2015 - Wind nearly blew lipstick off!

The day dawned a bit duller - quite a few clouds about. But it was correspondingly cooler too. Today we travel across the White Mountains ( well not right over the very top, but high enough - the highest peak is over 2400m) We set Tom and headed north from Vamos. Soon after crossing under the main highway, we began climbing. It was a good road to start with - wide, reasonable bends, and places you can stop for a photo. Then, it got better. We felt like we were above Monte Carlo driving an Alpha Romeo with Grace Kelly! Wide road, even wider...

Aug 24, 2015 - Vamoose to Vamos.....

Golly sleeping habits Pt.1 Even with the shutters down all day, the apartment is very hot when we get home. We have to put the shutters down again before bed ( the sunrise might wake us up!) So last night we moved the fan to the foot of the bed and left it on high all night. Together with the ceiling fan, this created better cooling so J&C had a slightly cooler night and slept better. Doesn't help me much! ( I'm made of wool) We awoke at 8 - no swim today as we want to leave earlier for a day at Chania. By the time our washing was finished,...

Aug 23, 2015 - Tom Tom Turnaround....

It was a hot night (again!). C didn't sleep too well. Oh for an aircon. We could leave the bedroom doors open, but - Mossies (maybe)! When the sun gets up ( same side) things heat up quickly! We made a slow start - scrambled eggs (well the eggs were here to be used!) and cheese pastries. Then we put a load of washing on and went for a swim. Lots of big fluffy thunder clouds about but we've had a few of these about. We decided as it was Sunday ( and ancient monuments close Mondays) we would visit the ancient site Aptera which is on top of a...

Aug 22, 2015 - Brain like a mosquito's

About 11:30 we went up to Vamos, parked, and wandered about the old town. Many old ruins of stone houses - many restored with beautiful gardens. After a time we felt a bit thirsty so stopped at the cafe near the mini market. Mostly Greek men sipping coffees. We ordered frappe and mineral water. J's mineral water had a crown seal so he took it in to get it opened. The owner was horrified and apologised and said he had a brain like a mosquito's! A bit later he came to see if we were OK and realised he hadn't put water on the table. more...

Aug 22, 2015 - Got up, got outta bed,.......

Very warm last night. No aircon so we had an overhead fan plus a fan on a stand. Still hard to sleep. Anyway we had the shutters down, so the sun didn't wake us. About 9 we had a swim. After showering, we had brekky outside on our patio. It is warming up. Big fluffy thunder clouds on the horizon! They have been having quite a bit of rain here this summer - and increased humidity to go with it. Today we will poke about locally - maybe go to Zorba's village a bit later ( that's where they made the film) More later

Aug 21, 2015 - Don't knock the goat!

We awoke at 8 so we could be ready for brekky at 9. Luckily the aircon ran until 6, then J had to reset it for the next 2 hrs. Breakfast was on the patio in the garden - in the shade with a pleasant breeze. We checked out at 10:30 and had a long chat with co- host Elina and her baby. She was very helpful and told us places we could go. She seemed quite upset that we were leaving the Western end of the island. This is a problem - you don't know what a place will be like until you get there. Oh well, maybe we'll come back. The accom was...

Aug 20, 2015 - Expletive deleted, expletive deleted, expletive deleted!

This morning at 9:30 we were served a typical Cretan breakfast in our room. Fresh orange juice. Fresh fruit (J couldn't have due to apple and fresh peach), yoghurt with honey and nuts, scrambled egg with spicy tomato in it, sausages, rusks topped with tomato, olives ( small, black and very tasty), cucumber and creamed feta cheese, fresh breads with honey and jam, and coffee. A very good start to the day. J walked the 200m to the rental car office and collected a red 4 door Seat Ibiza. Quite comfortable but the first manual for a while (...
